Description
New York: B. W. Huebsch, 1916. First edition. Very Good. A Very Good copy with bright gilt on the spine. Shelfwear to extremities. Front inner hinge starting, but holding. Some offsetting to front endpaper and early ownership signature to front pastedown. Page 16 with slight skinning affecting several lines of text. Joyce's first novel recounts the coming of age story of Stephen Dedalus, the artistic alter-ego of Joyce himself. Stephen grows up ensconced in rigid institutions: the church, school system, family, and national politics. Feeling trapped, Stephen experiences a series of awakenings as he grows older and as a result of these awakenings, Stephen rejects these traditional bulwarks of Irish culture. Instead, he develops an aestheticism that will support his artistic vision. This rejection of existing communities and institutions, alongside his embrace of a new aestheticism, alienates Stephen from what he knows. Facing this alienation, Stephen decides to leave Ireland and pursue his art abroad. A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man is an important contribution to literary modernism. One innovation is Joyce's use of age-appropriate syntax and vocabulary. The beginning of the novel, which starts in Stephen's infancy, is mostly monosyllabic nonsense. As Stephen grows older and grasps more about the world and his place in it, the novel's vocabulary and syntax become correspondingly complex. Of Joyce's first novel, H.G. Wells writes that "It is a mosaic of jagged fragments that does altogether render with extreme completeness the growth of a rather secretive, imaginative boy in Dublin. The technique is startling, but on the whole it succeeds." Very Good.

1778. BRINK, Carol Fredrik. Nouvelle Description du Cap de Bonne-Esperance. Two parts in one volume. [8], 130, [2], 100 pp. With 16 folding plates, of which 15 depict African game and 1 of an African tree. 8vo., 205 x 123 mm, bound in contemporary Dutch mottled calf, spine gilt, marbled edges and endpapers. Amsterdam: J.H. Schneider, 1778. First Edition in French. The original Dutch edition was published by the same printer in the same year. A fascinating account of the Cape of Good Hope which features an historical journal of an expedition into the interior of Africa undertaken by 85 men who were "diligent observers, and one of them had the advantage of being conversant with the Hottentot language. This document is therefore not only highly interesting, but of great permanent worth" (Theal). The work is illustrated with 16 fine engraved plates of African game; moreover, it contains insightful notes compiled by J.S.N. Allamand (a Leiden professor), M. Klockner (an Amsterdam physician) and other members of the expedition. The journal is based on the diary kept by Carol Fredrik Brink (or Brinck), who served as a land-surveyor on the expedition. There is much information on the African tribes, fauna and flora, and minerals that the caravan encountered during their tour to Namaqualand, which lasted from 16 July 1761 until 27 August 1762. Corners bumped, headcap worn, but a very good copy in unsophisticated condition. Theal, History of South Africa, 1691-1795 (erroneously calling for 13 plates).

Description
[Mexico]: Impressa en la Imprenta del Real, 1765. Good plus.. [26],34pp. Small quarto. Removed from a sammelband. Worming along top edge, somewhat affecting top two lines of text (heavier to title page and initial leaves); additional biopredation at lower corner, occasionally affecting catchwords and printed marginal notes. Otherwise light dust soiling and an occasion foxmark. Scarce printing of a sermon preached by Franciscan friar Domingo Pedro de Arrieta on October 4, 1765, at the Franciscan monastery in Mexico. Of Arrieta, Beristain writes, "Natural de Mexico, donde profesó el orden de predicadores a 3 de Julio de 1752. Fué lector de teología, maestro de su provincia, doctor de la Universidad, notario y comisario de la Inquisición." The sermon concerns the role of St. Francis in advancing the cause of Catholicism and veneration of Christ, as well as his example to all who seek heaven. The Spanish text is set with extensive side- and shouldernotes, with Latin words printed in italics. The forematter and extensive preliminary licenses also include two religious poems by friends of Arrieta. Of surmounting interest is the dedication to Thomas Aquinas, in verse with sidenotes, which also contains an attractive engraved portrait of the good Doctor Angelicus, printed "au sanguine." Rare; OCLC reports copies held by only four U.S. institutions -- the JCB, Berkeley, Penn, and NYPL. Beristain I, p.175. Medina, Mexico 4978. Palau 17531.

In the original gilded frame with a Willis label on the reverse. View of Tségháhoodzání also known as Window Rock, which is the namesake of the Navajo Nation capital and Arizona town. Joseph Roy Willis (1876-1960) was a photographer and painter who in 1917, on his way to New York City via train, stopped in Laguna, NM, curious about the Hopi Snake Dance. This brief first experience in New Mexico spawned a lifelong interest. That same year, Willis moved to Gallup and bought the studio of Simon Schwemberger. He helped start the Gallup Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial (an annual event ongoing since 1922) and is best known for his photographs of Indians and landscaped of the southwest.

Description
Buffalo: The Courier Company, 1900. First Edition. Wraps of Light Card. Ribbon tying through stab binding. Very Good. Before the blockkbuster epic movies, most notably the Silent version starring Ramon Novarro and the 1959 Charlton Heston sound remake, there was a stage spectacle produced by the leading producers of the day, Klaw and Erlanger, the team which nearly successfully had a monopoly stranglehold on American theaters in the early 20th Century. All the versions were based on the 1880 Lew Wallace novel. This, the first dramatization, opened at the Broadway Theatre in 1899 and became a huge hit, in no small part due to its special effects and extraordinary production values, including the use of real horses to stage the chariot race. Among the notable stars of this version were William Hart, who became a big time Western star in Silent movies, Oblong, 25 by 30 cm. Unpaginated. 40 leaves, with content entirely on rectos excepting rear wrap, in which the content is only on verso. Following the title page, a glossy leaf quotes the bible and contains some bars of music written for the drama. Another similar leaf appears near the end. Otherwise, the pattern is an alternation between text and photo leaves. The text leaves are of a thinner wax paper stock acts as a tissue guard. And the text consists of direct quotations from the play, it would seem. Sometimes the text is in verse such as one can expect from epics about the Roman Empire. The photo leaves generally consist of large b/w photo from the production, or occasionally two smaller photos, and these photos are surrounded by line drawings that are decorative and in some way inform the photo, although the connection between the two isn't always immediately apparent to us. One photo is partially colored, we would add. Almost all the photos are extraordinarily vivid -- one can truly feel as if one is in the audience. They also in many ways manifest how foreign such a production is from a modern stage drama. Light wear. Last leaf with a few edge chips. Mostly clean.
