Washington Secretary David Humphreys' 1802 Anti-Slavery Poem dedicated to Prince Regent of Portugal

Description
David Humphreys served as an aide-de-camp to General George Washington during the Revolutionary War, and they kept up a voluminous correspondence after the war. After serving as ambassador to Portugal and then Spain, Humphreys imported a herd of merino sheep from Spain and founded the woolen industry in the United States. Humphreys' poem criticizes the institution of slavery that causes human suffering for American luxuries; praises the benefits of America's industrial capabilities, including wool; and the importance of education for American progress. Humphreys inscribed this copy to Prince Regent Dom Joo Maria Jos Francisco Xavier de Paula Lus Antnio Domingos Rafael (1767-1826). From 1799, Prince John took the reins of government from his mother, Queen Dona Maria I (1734-1816), who had developed clinical depression. From 1816 until his death a decade later, he was King John VI of the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil, and the Algarves. After the recognition of Brazil's independence, he was the titular Emperor of Brazil and King of Portugal. DAVID HUMPHREYS. Autograph Manuscript Signed, "A Poem on American Industry," March 1802, Lisbon, Portugal. 32 pp. Excerpts[1] "Oh, could my song impressive horror bring,Of conscious guilt th' insufferable sting; From eyes untaught to weep the tear should start,And mercy melt the long obdur'd of heart.See naked negroes rear the sugar'd reeds!Behold! Their flesh beneath their driver bleeds! And hear their heart-heav'd groans! then say, how good,How sweet, the dainties drugg'd with human blood!" "Thou, slavery, (maledictions blast thy name!)Fell scourge of mortals, reason's foulest shame!Fly, fiend infernal! To thy Stygean shore,And let thy deeds defile my song no more." "Oh, might my guidance from the downs of Spain,Lead a white flock across the western main;Fam'd like the bark that bore the Argonaut,Should be the vessel with the burden fraught!Clad in the raiment my Merinos yield,Like Cincinnatus fed from my own field;Far from ambition, grandeur, care and strife,In sweet fruition of domestic life; There would I pass with friends, beneath my trees,What rests from public life, in letter'd ease." "From industry the sinews strength acquire,The limbs expand, the bosom feels new fire.Unwearied industry pervades the whole,Nor lends more force to body than to soul.Hence character is form'd, and hence proceedsTh' enlivening heat that fires to daring deeds:Then animation bids the spirit warm,Soar in the whirlwind and enjoy the storm. For our brave tars what clime too warm, too cold,What toil too hardy, or what task too bold?O'er storm-vex'd waves our vent'rous vessels roll,Round artic isles or near th' antarctic pole;Nor fear their crews the fell tornado's ire,Wrapp'd in a deluge of Caribbean fire. The wonders of the deep they see, while tostFrom earth's warm girdle to the climes of frost:Full soon to bid the battle's thunder roar,And guard with wooden walls their native shore." "Such sober habits industry prepares,And order guarantees for freedom's heirs.Say, in what state, so imbib'd the youthTh' eternal principles of right and truth?Where education such instruction spread?Where on the mind such influence morals shed?Where modesty with charms so fair appear'd?So honour'd age, and virtue so rever'd?" David Humphreys (1752-1818) was born in Connecticut and graduated from Yale in 1771. After graduating, he became the principal of a public school and then a private tutor. In 1776, he enlisted in the Continental Army in the 2nd Connecticut regiment. He wrote the first American sonnet, entitled "Addressed to my Friends at Yale College, on my Leaving Them to Join the Army." He served on the staffs of several generals, and in 1780, he became George Washington's aide-de-camp with the rank of colonel. He became a confidant and advisor to the general, and they became lifelong friends. After the Battle of Yorktown in 1781, Washington tasked Humphreys and another aide to deliver the surrendered British colors and his report on the battle to Congress. He was one of two aides who accompanied Washington when he resigned his commission to the Continental Congress. In 1785, he wrote "A Poem on the Happiness of America," which went through ten editions between 1786 and 1804. "With great pleasure I received the intimation of your spending the winter under this Roof," Washington wrote to Humphreys in 1787. "The invitation was not less sincere, than the reception will be cordial. The only stipulations I shall contend for are, that in all things you shall do as you please?I will do the same; and that no ceremony may be used or any restraint be imposed on any one." In May 1791, President George Washington appointed Humphreys as the first U.S. ambassador to Portugal. In 1797, President John Adams appointed Humphreys as the second U.S. ambassador to Spain. After his terms as ambassador, he introduced a herd of merino sheep from Spain into the United States in 1802. He established the first successful woolen mill factory in the United States. As a poet and author, he was one of the "Hartford Wits" and was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1804 and a Fellow of the Royal Society of London in June 1807. His play The Yankey in England (1814) was influential in establishing the stage character of the Yankee. Provenance: This manuscript descended in the Humphreys family until approximately 40 years ago, when the present seller, a now elderly art dealer in Vermont, acquired it. Description
Roxboro, N.C.: January 15, 1860. Good.. [2]pp. Wrinkled, previously folded. A few minor losses at folds, not affecting text. Two half-inch closed tears from edges. Light toning and foxing. After arriving in Roxboro, North Carolina, in mid-January 1860, planter J.C. Barnett writes to his friend and business partner, a Colonel Henry, to complain about the tight money situation in the state, which has forced him essentially to pawn a slave in order to raise cash: "I found monetary matters distressingly stringent in the City, and was entirely unable to use the Graham bond at all. I had hoped to get it off at 8 per cent per annum but could not do it at double that amount, the consequence was that after making the last payment on my land which was due 1st Jan 61 with the 3 thousand dollar draft, [I] did not have enough left to pay expenses home and had to deposit a negro to get money to leave the city. So you can judge my situation." Furthermore, he has other unpaid debts that he hopes to settle with future cotton sales: "I gave R.H. Williams a draft for 93 dollars, also Messrs Lea & Cheatham of Louisville, one for 111 dollars, [and] owing to the circumstances just mentioned was unable to meet them. You will do me a favor, when you see these gentlemen to explain the reason. When you sell my cotton, after paying Mr. Batt and yourself the expenses, if there is a remainder please apply it to my Louisville and Williams debt. Also Mr. Gratiot has a claim of an hundred dollars. I will write to these gentlemen and tell to apply to you when you sell my cotton." Interesting detail on economic difficulties in the south just prior to the Civil War.

Description
Madrid, 1989. Portfolio, glossy card stock. Near Fine. This is a most unusual jewelry promotion, and while it is more modern than almost all of the ephemera and trade-related items we have in our stock, its singular artistry makes it something we are proud to have on offer. The portraits, each 31 by 22, have deliberately roughed, or uneven, edges. The palette employed is fleshy browns and oranges, with turquoise and silver eyes and touches of red and green providing a contrast. We assume a printing process was somehow employed, but the portraits come off as original watercolors. Berao's bold modernistic designs accessorize each of these women, a few, vaguely conjuring up Ava Gardner from "The Barefoot Contessa", but one would not know from the portraits themselves that these were prepared as part of a jewelry production. Rather, Berao is clearly promoting his jewelry by associating with an idealized strong, glamorous woman, one who is herself a work of art. Berao himself was born in 1945 and is still active, with his flagship store in Madrid and branches in Paris, Milan, Ibiza and Barcelona. The portraits have a tissue wrapping, and these slip into a fold in a portfolio of glossy card.

Description
France, 1890. Very good. Light dust soiling, heavy finger soiling to doll. A couple short tears. Neck break on doll with repairs.. A handmade 5.75" paper doll depicting a slim upper class blonde beauty, accompanied by outfits and accessories inspired by the famed House of Worth. The outfits were produced earlier, for two dolls not present here, and this is a nice example of a child making her own doll to suit the outfits she has (perhaps been handed down by a sibling). The doll's hair evokes the then-trendy "Gibson Girl" style, and she faces the left in profile. The outfits face both sides, and she appears to elegantly look over her shoulder in the right-facing outfits (though it is obvious she was not original to those particular outfits). Made from scrap paper with French text on the back, each hand cut with original pencil and water color artwork. In total, there are sixteen (16) outfits and twelve (12) accessories (including hats and a veil, furs and robes). Includes slits to slip accessories over the doll. There is evening wear, day wear, outerwear, and even a swimming costume and grand wedding dress with veil. The House of Worth was a Fresh fashion house known for haute couture founded by Charles Frederick Worth in 1858, and reaching peak popularity in.

Description
quarto, one page, plus stampless address leaf, formerly folded, in very good, clean, and legible condition. 1851 Tennessee lawyer from Connecticut who represented the slave Phebe, winning her freedom in a famed case of "Negro identity" Attorney Fogg had received Bills' check for "lands sold for Hon. George E. Badger" (U.S. Senator from North Carolina; Secretary of the Navy under William Henry Harrison and John Tyler; nominated for Associate Justice of the US Supreme Court). He wished Bills, a rich plantation owner, a pleasant journey to Europe. Frances Brinley Fogg, the son of a Connecticut Minister, a "studious New Englander" who became a prominent Nashville lawyer, married to a celebrated woman writer, was an upper-class gentleman who raced horses, was counsel for the University of Nashville and a delegate to the Tennessee Constitutional Convention. Bills was a typical client, a leader of the Tennessee Democratic Party who had married the cousin of President James K. Polk, and, when he wasn't taking one of his frequent trips to Europe, entertained Polk, Andrew Jackson, Sam Houston, and Jefferson Davis at the mansion on one of his slave plantations. But, 25 years earlier, one of Fogg's first legal cases was of a different nature. Together with a young James Polk, Fogg had first studied law with Felix Grundy, later Attorney General of the United States in the Van Buren Administration (and a devotee of slavery). It was probably in this way that Fogg became acquainted with the case of "Phebe, a woman of color" whose court suit for her freedom against the violent drunk who had brought her and her sons to Tennessee from Virginia, became a landmark proceeding of slave law and "Negro identity." Phebe had argued that she was being wrongly held in slavery because she was descended from an American Indian woman, her grandmother, who was not a slave. For proof, she had witnesses who testified that they knew her grandmother, who was "of Indian extraction" and a free woman. Since in Tennessee and most Southern states, "racial identity" was determined through the maternal line, Phebe maintained that she too should be considered free. Grundy's law partner, representing the slave-owner, countered that this was merely "illegal" hearsay evidence which should not be credited as proof of Phebe's "pedigree", that "you cannot prove by hearsay whether an ancestor was European or Indian, white or black, Slave or free". Several Courts, with reservations, disagreed and eventually, in 1827 - with Fogg as her counsel - awarded Phebe her freedom. $ 150.00
