Description
Marshfield, Mass., Sept. 25th, 1879. Manuscript map in black ink with watercolor wash, 19.125" x 12.5" plus margins. A skillfully drawn manuscript map, which appears to have been compiled for an official purpose, but does not appear to have been published. This map focuses on the waterfront villages of Marshfield, Massachusetts, a town perhaps best known as the home of Daniel Webster, whose house in Green Harbor Village is identified. While the exact purpose of the map is unstated, it would seem to relate to improvements and proposed improvements to the system of roads. Green Harbor Avenue, which extends across Green Harbor River connecting the village with Ocean Avenue and the Massachusetts Bay waterfront, bears a note indicating that it was built in 1879-the year this map was drawn. Perhaps more notably, the map shows a proposed bridge road extending from the oceanfront below Brant Rock Village, across the peninsula and Green Harbor to Webster's Dock, in Green Harbor Village. This proposal, which came to naught, seems to have been the raison d'être for the map, which was likely used by those who had it drafted in their attempt to build support for the scheme. Other features of the map include the numerous public and private buildings in each village-as well as some in more peripheral zones-many of which are identified. Among these are the aforementioned Daniel Webster house, as well as numerous hotels, and life-saving station No. 26 of the Massachusetts Humane Society, located near Blue Fish Rock. The extensive salt marshes for which Marshfield is named are carefully drawn and highlighted in green wash. OCLC records just one map by Charles W. Howland, his Map of the Town of Abington Plymouth County, Mass., Boston, J. Mayer & Co., 1873 (as well as an 1874 issue), a town located to the west of the region depicted in the present map, and not to be confused with the Village of Abington. An apparently unique map reflecting Marshfield's state of development in the late nineteenth century. CONDITION: Very good, old fold marks, a bit of light damp-staining and soiling.

(FRENCH REVOLUTION) TABLEAU des Prisons de Paris, sous le regne de Robespierre [by Philippe Edme Coittant]. Paris: chez l'Editor, 1797. Two volumes bound as one, the first volume with a full-page engraved frontispiece of a guillotine showing various piles of severed heads. Thick 8vo., [iii] 222, [i] 271 pp.; early red boards (sides and edges rubbed), spine gilt-ruled with leather label affixed. First edition, a very rare work in commerce, OCLC records several similar titles but with different pagination. This early depiction of the Guillotine machine with its severed heads piled below must have been quite sensationalized to be illustrated at this time.

Description
Brooklyn, New York, 1964. Twenty-eight page scrapbook measuring 11 x 14 inches. Containing forty-one photographs measuring 5 x 7 inches and smaller and fifty-eight pieces of ephemera, forty-three of which are filled-in entry slips from a contest. Cover with wear and large stain, contents generally excellent; overall very good to excellent.. The Carpetbaggers is a 1964 film directed by Edward Dmytryk, based on the controversial 1961 novel of the same name, which was banned in several US cities for its depictions of sexuality and violence.[1] Offered here is a scrapbook documenting an unconventional marketing campaign for the film’s New York run at Loew’s Metropolitan Theatre in Downtown Brooklyn. The theater’s conventional marketing tactics included contests, flyering, spraypainting sidewalks, and distributing promotional cards for stores. Less conventional ones included employees reading a gigantic “oversized book” on the subway (the “Subway ballyhoo”), erecting eight large fake telephone booths, and carrying a suitcase reading “I’M ON MY WAY TO SEE THE CARPETBAGGERS AT LOEW’S METROPOLITAN” (the “Walking ballyhoo”). The photograph of this last tactic shows a man who at least resembles Adlai Stevenson looking at the suitcase as he walks by; the caption reads: “Let’s start off with a question. . . . IS THERE ANY REASON WHY ADLAI STEVENSON OUR AMBASSADOR TO THE U N. . . . . SHOULD NOT BE ADVISED THAT THE ‘CARPETBAGGERS’ WERE AT THE LOEW’S METROPOLITAN THEATRE.” All thirty-seven of the various tactics are listed in a caption at the end of the scrapbook. The scrapbook also acts as a document of Downtown Brooklyn in 1964, especially its then-bustling shopping area on Fulton Street. Stores include Woolworth’s, E.J. Korvette’s, Bond’s, Bunnie Towne, and more. Though mainly department store interiors, it also shows in several shots the subway entrances and cars, street scenes, smaller shops and restaurants, and the exterior and lobby of Loew’s Metropolitan. Opened in 1918, the theatre closed in 1996 and re-opened in 2002 as a church. The Carpetbaggers received mixed reviews and its share of controversy, particularly for a nude scene which had to be cut from the US release. In response to the controversy, actress Carroll Baker, who appears in the nude scene, told the New York Times that her “children have seen things on the benches of Central Park that have never been shown in movies.”[2] Of interest to historians of film and film marketing, and of the Downtown Brooklyn neighborhood. Milwaukee, Wisconsin: Virginia W. Williams, 1969. Very good +. 11” x 8½”. Stapled wrappers. Pp. 52. Very good plus: light foxing to edges of rear wrap; tiny corner dogear throughout; else internally fresh. This is another issue of Echo which mainly centered on the question, “Should Sex Education be Taught in the Schools?” with input from local educator Phyllis M. Banks as well as a physician and a minister. There was also a focus on “Central City Youth,” listing activities offered by the local Boys' Clubs and the Echo Writers' Workshop along with “exciting books that should keep readers of all ages busy.” The issue announced ventures of the local WICS (Women in Community Service) and PTA as well as attorney Leonard Brady's becoming the city's first Black bank president. It stressed the importance of “Family Reading,” printed an original poem by Williams and several by local youth, as well as an original play. There were great cartoons, illustrations, recipes and fashion advice. Along with a plethora of ads featuring images of Black proprietors and customers, there was also a twopage business directory, deemed “Echo's Shopping Guide.” OCLC shows five entities with holdings of Echo over two entries, but only one has this issue.

Description
London: S. W. Partridge & Co, 1870. Revised Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Revised Edition. Hardcover. The Royal Librarian to Queen Victoria, Bernard Bolingbroke Woodward (1816-1869), invites you on a lushly illustrated stroll through the seasons in this warmly written and whimsically detailed guide to the Natural History of the Year, summoning friends among the flora and fauna for each month. Illustrated in a frontispiece of the royal family and Windsor Castle, where Woodward served as Royal Librarian, a decorative title page, a decorative dedicatory page, 12 plates celebrating each month of the year, and charmingly engraved vignettes and headpieces throughout, this ornately Victorian, gilt-stamped, wildflower ramble through natural history echoes its author across the centuries: "So forth into the fields, and catch the year as it awakens!" 7 1/2" X 5 5/8". 108pp. Presents nicely in protective archival jacket. Bound in burgundy cloth over bevelled boards, with color pictorial label onlay to upper board, lushly bordered in black and gilt with butterflies, berries, and wildflowers and lettered in gilt to upper board and spine, with rear board stamped in blind. Mild wear to binding, with small nick to bottom edge of pictorial label, bumping to edges and extremities, sunning to spine, and a hint of fraying to corners. All edges gilt. Front hinge tender; binding remains quite firm and sound. LIght dust soiling to blush-colored endpapers, and small tears to front free endpaper. Occasional smudge or thumbprint to pages throughout, else unmarked.

Description
Boston: The Christopher Publishing House, 1934. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good/very good. First Edition. Hardcover. 8.25" x 5.5". First edition, presentation copy, signed and inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "To R.G. Anderson, compliments, Albert E. Kirk." A remarkable work of Depression-era Social Gospel radicalism. Kirk, a Methodist Episcopal minister in Sterling, Kansas, delivered these fifteen essays as successive Sunday evening pulpit editorials, each followed by a sermon. The result is one of the more intellectually adventurous works of American religious political economy from the period. Kirk diagnoses the Depression not as a business failure but as a financial and structural one, marshaling heterodox authorities - Kropotkin on the economics of abundance, Henry George on the wedge of concentrated wealth, Thomas Carlyle on the passage from class competition to human brotherhood - in service of a thoroughgoing critique of laissez-faire capitalism delivered from a prairie pulpit. Part One (Diagnosis) identifies nine systemic factors: surplus production paradoxically coexisting with mass want; unprecedented concentration of wealth; structural unemployment; chaos in the money-credit system; unjust business manipulations including tax-free securities and wage suppression; enslaving debt at every level from tenant farming to federal government; governmental confusion; a tragic conflict between Christian ideals of cooperation and the competitive economic order; and the consequent deterioration of human welfare. Part Two (Remedial Suggestions) calls for clarifying government's role, stopping unjust manipulations, stabilizing the credit system, nationally planning industry, and - most strikingly - democratizing industry itself, giving workers a voice, a share of burdens, and participation in rewards. Kirk cites Kropotkin's Mutual Aid-era argument that scarcity is no longer nature's condition but a manufactured one, uses Henry George's imagery of a wedge driving humanity into deeper poverty, quotes Carlyle's vision of passing from class competition to human brotherhood, and endorses Roosevelt's New Deal as an "epochal" if incomplete recognition of what planning requires. His concluding word frames America's failure to close the gap between Christian brotherhood and competitive capitalism as the defining moral crisis of the age. Dedicated to the congregation of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Sterling, Kansas. Dark tan dust jacket with light chipping and edgewear. Red cloth boards with gilt lettering to upper board. Contents overall bright and clean, with substantial offsetting to pages 24-25 where some prior sheet must have been left. Very good book in very good jacket. Limited number of institutional holdings recorded in OCLC; scarce in the trade.

London: Jonathan Cape, 1965 First edition, first impression, first issue, second state (as usual) with "swop" on p. 57, line 12, in Gilbert's Binding A. Publisher's black cloth, lettered in gilt to spine, green patterned endpapers; in its original pictorial dust jacket designed by Richard Chopping, featuring a wraparound illustration of a golden gun with an ivory butt-plate, a snake's skull, green leaves, two flies, and four golden bullets arranged in an "M" shape. Near fine book, with a tiny nick to spine, a light vertical indentation to rear board, and a small mark to rear pastedown; very good or better unclipped dust jacket, with light wear to head of spine, small closed tear to top edge of rear panel, a single spot of foxing to butt of gun on front panel, a touch of soiling to rear panel, and some numbers in pen and eraser abrasions to rear flap. Overall, a fresh, internally clean copy. Gilbert A13a (1.2). The Man with the Golden Gun involves one of 007's most seemingly impossible missions. M sends him to Jamaica to kill "Pistols" Scaramanga, known for his weapon of choice- a gold-plated Colt .45 loaded with bullets made of solid gold. An assassin trained by the KGB, Scaramanga has blown through a trail of M16 agents and has a bullet etched with the number 007. While many have hypothesized that the character of James Bond is Fleming's fictional representation of himself, it is Scaramanga that bears unusual similarity to Fleming; both are retired intelligence agents living in Jamaican bungalows. Fleming wrote all of his James Bond novels from his Goldeneye home in Jamaica, including The Man with the Golden Gun, which was published posthumously.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

New York: Little, Brown and Company, 2020. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Fine. 6x1x9. First edition. A fine copy in a fine jacket. 2020 Hard Cover. xx, 343 pp. A deeply personal work about identity and belonging in a nation coming apart at the seams, Homeland Elegies blends fact and fiction to tell an epic story of longing and dispossession in the world that 9/11 made. Part family drama, part social essay, part picaresque novel, at its heart it is the story of a father, a son, and the country they both call home. Pulitzer Prize-winning author Ayad Akhtar forges a new narrative voice to capture a country in which debt has ruined countless lives and the gods of finance rule, where immigrants live in fear, and where the nation's unhealed wounds wreak havoc around the world. Akhtar attempts to make sense of it all through the lens of a story about one family, from a heartland town in America to palatial suites in Central Europe to guerrilla lookouts in the mountains of Afghanistan, and spares no one - least of all himself - in the process.
