Description
19/04/1941. A symbol of the growing alliance against the NazisThe Munich Conference of 1938 led to the surrender of part of Czechoslovakia called the Sudetenland in the name of appeasement. Many in Britain were jubilant at the thought of having avoided war, but Winston Churchill felt the Czechs had been betrayed and told Parliament that the British people “should know that there has been gross neglect and deficiency in our defenses; they should know that we have sustained a defeat without a war, the consequences of which will travel far with us along our road; they should know that we have passed an awful milestone in our history, when the whole equilibrium of Europe has been deranged…”The annexation of the Sudetenland, completed according to the Munich timetable, was not the end of Czechoslovakia’s suffering. On March 15, 1939, all Czech areas were occupied by the Nazis and proclaimed a protectorate of the Third Reich. In exile in Chicago, the former Czechoslovak president Edvard Bene_ appealed to the Great Powers and the League of Nations to denounce German aggression and the breach of the Munich agreement. France, Britain, and the United States raised formal protests against Hitler’s takeover of the Czech Lands (often referred to as the “rape of Prague”). When World War II broke out in September 1939, Czech exiles, including the main leaders, formed the Czech National Liberation Committee and immediately began to seek international recognition as the exiled government of Czechoslovakia. By the end of 1939, though, France and Britain had only extended it the right to conclude international treaties, but not in the name of the Czechoslovak Republic.Winston Churchill became Prime Minister in May 1940 and he was a friend of Czechoslovakia. The fall of France and the perilous military situation prompted the British Government to rally all possible anti-Nazi strength, and on July 21, 1940, the Benes Committee was recognized by Churchill as a provisional Czechoslovak Government. By this formal step, taken by Lord Halifax as Foreign Minister, the Allied powers were now able to negotiate with the Provisional Czechoslovak Government, and six months later a financial agreement was signed between the British and the Czechs providing for credits to the Bene_ government. While Bene_ was still the head of a provisional government in exile, he created the concept of Czechoslovak legal and political continuity. On this basis he claimed that everything that had followed the Munich Conference had been illegal.Nevertheless, the Committee still felt somewhat insecure about Britain’s recognition, because it specifically mentioned Bene_ as president, but did not explicitly link Bene_ to the previously-existing government. They pressed the British in April 1941 for even greater clarity. On the 18th of that month, they sent a letter to the British requesting that their agreements ""be concluded, as before September, 1938, in the name of the Czechoslovak Republic"". In other words, they wanted unqualified recognition and a declaration of legal continuity. Not all the appeasers of 1938 were gone from the Conservative Party, and Jan Smuts, South Africa’s leader, was also hostile to the idea of granting full recognition to Benes. A British change of heart came when Churchill paid a visit to a Czech military unit on April 19, 1941, and Benes gave him a summary of the Czech arguments for full recognition. Churchill was already pleased with the spirit shown by the Czech soldiers and was moved to tears when they sang ‘Rule Britannia’ at the end of his visit. He was struck above all by their desire to serve Britain after being betrayed at Munich. A few days later Churchill gave Benes’ statement to Eden, who was already pro-Czech, with the remark: “I do not understand why the Czechs could not have the same status as the other allies. They deserve it.” The final official recognition was issued by Britain and the USSR on July 18 and by the USA on July 31, 1941.This album leaf, April 19, 1941, contains the names of many involved in gaining full recognition for the Czechoslovak Government-in-Exile. There is Churchill himself, who has dated the leaf April 1941, plus his wife Clementine Churchill. On the Czech side, there are the main players: Edvard Benes, Czechoslovak President-in-Exile; Czech Foreign Minister Jan Masaryk; and Jan Sramek, Prime Minister of the Czechoslovak Government-in-Exile. Also signing are W. Averell Harriman, then serving as President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s special envoy to Europe, and Harley “Hap” Arnold, the new chief of the U.S. Army Air Corps, clearly there as an observer.  Affixed to a light board.

Description
[New York], 1923. Good. 11¼" x 9". Brad-bound binder, three-hole punched, holding 360 pp. accounts and cover sheet, mimeographed rectos only. Good: front cover partially detached; first two leaves detached, another nearly so and heavily chipped; several dogears. This is an astounding collection of day-by-day reporting on the Great Railroad Strike of 1922, providing in-depth and brazen accounts of disrupted New York transit, acts of violence and revolt. The infamous strike, also known as the Railway Shopmen's Strike, was one of the largest nationwide work stoppages and one of the most violent labor strikes in America. Nearly 400,000 workers in railway shops and roundhouses walked off the job to protest a 12 percent wage cut in July. U.S. Attorney General Harry Daugherty sent U.S. Marshals to aid the railroads and defeat the strike, and at least 10 workers were killed by the National Guard. The strike was viewed as a major failure for the Harding administration, led to the passing of the 1926 Railroad Labor Act and paved the way for industrial unionizing in the 1930s. This book was furnished by one Chris Chapman to New York's "Supt. of Trans." in January 1923, comprising "items of interest and events that occurred each day during the Strike-period October 1st to December 31st Inclusive 1922." October 1 st was the "Ninety-second day of strike" and 83rd of the "operation of cars," a data point that, along with the weather highs and lows, was reported nearly every day. Times and depots were provided for each incident, most often cars being "stoned" and windows broken, citing damage and delays. A staggering number of days saw "shots fired from a passing automobile," seemingly deliberate collisions and reports of men climbing aboard, attempting "to assault the crew." At Niagara Falls a man was arrested "who was carrying a rifle, he claims he was taking it to be cleaned," there were mentions of fires, "placing torpedoes on track" and "wagon tipped over." "Mobs" threw bricks, bottles, snowballs and apples, one conductor "smashed [a] man in the face and another "was attacked by several men who stole his badge." Our author noted claims for damages incurred "through failure of the city to furnish adequate police protection to its property and employees" as well as comments and activity of the "Union" and the "Council." Vivid, astonishing first-hand reporting of one of the country's largest labor strikes.

Description
1866. [one of Melville's scarcest] New York: Harper & Brothers, 1866. Original violet cloth, beveled board edges. First Edition of Melville's first published volume of verse, about the just-concluded American Civil War -- "dedicated to the memory of the Three Hundred Thousand who in the war for the maintenance of the Union fell devotedly under the flag of their fathers." In 1857 Melville stopped writing fiction after the publication of THE CONFIDENCE-MAN -- though he would live 34 additional years; discouraged by the lack of critical acclaim, he turned instead to verse, to which he had originally aspired. Three years later (1860) he submitted some poems to Harper, but his proposed volume was rejected, and those poems today are lost. Five years after that, spurred on by the fall of Richmond, he wrote the 72 poems that comprise BATTLE-PIECES -- the first section of 50+ describing the war chronologically, event by event, and the second section consisting of elegies, epitaphs, and requiems. His introductory poem "The Portent" (not cited in the Contents) covers the hanging of John Brown in 1859; two poems after "The Surrender at Appomattox" is "The Martyr," the assassination of Lincoln. Throughout, Melville describes not the glory of the war but the horror and the tragedy of the war. As Blanck notes, all copies bear the misprint "hnndred" on the copyright page (it is small print and the letters "u" and "n" are very similar, so a myth has evolved that there are two states). This copy is bound in textured violet cloth (Blanck's "red-purple C-like cloth," one of seven possibilities of cloth grain and color (no precedence). Condition is very good (slight wear at the spine ends and two small dents in the spine; spine a little sunned as always with this color; front endpaper cracked but tight). This is one of Melville's scarcer titles; one can well imagine that Harper printed comparatively few copies of Melville's second attempt at verse, having rejected his first attempt outright. Blanck 13673. Provenance: bookplates of [Dr.] Walter Ralph Steiner (1870-1942) and of [Prof.] Joseph Vincent Ridgely (1921-2014).

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1893. Hardcover. Very Good. Hardcover. This interesting book was issued as part of the publisher's Illustrated Library of Travel. The book starts with a chapter on early intercourse with Siam, followed by its geography, history, modern Siam, and descriptions of various cities and areas, Siamese life and customs, and ending with a chapter titled Bangkok and the New Siam. There are 25 black and white illustrations of everything from Siamese women, elephants in a Park at Ayuthia, to monkeys playing with a crocodile. Bound in brown cloth with gilt titling to spine. Cloth has a few light stains and signs of handling. Endpapers and text pages are clean and bright. In very good condition. Measures 7.5 x 5.25 inches. 296 pages. ASIANHIST/082925.

Description
Stanford, CA: Stanford University Press, 1994. Octavo, blue & white boards (hardcover), silver lettering, 553 pp. Near Fine in a Near Fine dust jacket. From dust jacket: This powerfully argued, objective history of the modern U.S. Navy explains how the Navy defined its purpose in the century after 1890. It relates in detail how the Navy formed and reformed its doctrine of naval force and operations around a concept articulated by Captain Alfred Thayer Mahan -- a concept of offensive sea control by a battleship fleet, and, new to America, the need to build and maintain an offensive battle fleet in peacetime. However, there were many years, notably in the 1920s and after World War II, when there was no enemy at sea, when the country turned inward, when the Navy could not count on support for an expensive peacetime battle fleet. After 45, especially, the inappropriateness of Mahanian principles strained a service that had taken them for granted, as did the centralization of the military establishment and the introduction of new weapons. What, then, did the Navy do? It shrewdly adapted old ideas to new technology. To reclaim its position in a general war, and avoid being transformed into a mere transport service, the Navy (with the Marine Corps) proved it was capable of power projection onto the land through seaborne bombers armed with nuclear weapons and by building a ballistic missile-launching submarine force. The growth of a Soviet sea force in the 1970s and 1980s revived the moribund sea power doctrine, but the Navy’s bid for strategic leadership failed in the face of the war-avoidance policy of the Cold War. With the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the Navy finally retired Mahan’s doctrine that the defeat of the enemy fleet was the Navy’s primary objective. Having proven itself in the course of the century as ever adaptable, the service moved back from sea control to a doctrine of expeditionary littoral warfare. This volume, then, is a history of how a war-fighting organization responded -- in doctrine, strategy, operations, preparedness, self-awareness, and force structure -- to radical changes in political circumstance, technological innovation, and national needs and expectations.
