Description
London: Printed by Thomas Martin, No. 76 Wood-street, Cheapside, 1790. Duodecimo (15.5 x 9.5 cm.), 168 pages. Copper-engraved frontispiece of a woman in her kitchen, plating a dish in front of a roaring fire, with the legend: "Engraved for Mrs. Harrison's new cookery book, 1783". FIRST EDITION THUS. Despite bearing a title identical with that of a book by Mrs. Harrison, the book was neither new nor Mrs. Harrison's. The bulk of the text, (pages [3]-156), is excerpted from Hannah Glasse's The Art of Cookery, and the remainder (pages 157-168) is headed "Every Man his Own Doctor". According to Maclean, Thomas Martin lost no time capitalizing on the growing popularity of Glasse's work, which was first published in this form in 1776. In full, modern speckled calf, raised bands, with gilt-titled, red morocco spine label. Tiny bit of insect predation to foot of first few leaves, otherwise near fine. Rare. [OCLC locates one copy of this undated printing, and one each of the 1776 and 1783 printings (NYPL); Cagle 758 (dating a similar printing as 1785); Maclean, page 72; Oxford 115; Wellcome Catalogue III, page 305 (1783 issue)].

Description
Chicago, IL: Educational Company, 189[7?]. Octavo, selected pages with various pagination [70 leaves], illustrated frontispiece, engraved illustrations. Oil cloth covers, decorated endpapers. Text in English and in German. Salesman's sample book, advertising separate English and German editions, for a subscription publication; postdating editions issued by North American in 1887 and by Acme in 1892, and antedating an enlarged edition published by The Educational Company in 1902. Maud C. Cooke, was a popular and prolific author of middlebrow books on etiquette, social comportment, hygiene, and housekeeping, in competition with perhaps better-known authors covering similar ground such as Virginia James and Marion Harland. In the case of Three Meals A Day, the subscription was handled by J.S. Ziegler & Co. of Chicago. The audience for the German edition would have been the Central-European immigrants settling at an accelerated rate from Pennsylvania and Ohio to Wisconsin and Ontario. At the same, the recipes advertised here, representing an anticipated 2,500, were not to be considered foreign: "Does not use French or foreign terms, but is a book for the American people," assured the Ziegler Company. And for those who might be worried: "It has no recipes taken from Italian, India[n], or Cuban authorities." The thirty-three "departments" under which the recipes are to be gathered include: Marketing, Carving, Soups, Fish, Game, Poultry, Meats, Hash & Croquettes, Eggs, Condiments, Garnishes, Vegetables, Bread, Fritters, Pastry, Cake, Puddings, Preserves, Jelly, Summer Desserts, Creams, Ice Creams & Sherbets, Table Drinks, Fruits, Pickles & Vinegar, Home-made Candies, French Candies [!], The Table, Housekeeping, Invalid Cookery, Health, The Toilet, Miscellaneous. Age toning to text block, otherwise very close to fine, in publisher's decorative white oil cloth. Laid-in are two folded broadsheets, both interesting promotional items for the cookbook. [OCLC locates no copies of the sample, and four copies of an "1890s" edition published by The Educational Company].

[Hartford, Conn: The Company; Press of A.W. Lang, Courant Building, 1885. Small octavo (14.5 x 12 cm.), 32 pages. Cover title: Do You Keep House? If Not, Why Not? Printer from cover. Illustrated advertisements interspersed. An engaging promotional cookbook for George W. Flint & Co., a Hartford-based-based household furnishings supplier. The ninety or so recipes found here are indeed "every-day", although Breeze Pudding and Hickory Nut Macaroons at the very least evoke something of an era. What grabs attention, rather, are engravings of the sort that might have been seen in the British weekly Punch, including a set of caricatures designed to show the metamorphosis of a curmudgeon into a happy hysteric - a result of a satisfactory purchase from Flint & Co., no doubt. There are, too, intricate commercial images – a rattan baby carriage; a parlor chair with silk fabric. The artist(s) is (are) uncredited. ~ Some pages mildly stained; shelfworn and soiled, spine and corners chipped; rear panel fore-edge with two small closed tears. Stapled, in faded wrappers, with an illustration of the satisfied customer who appears within. Good. Scarce. [OCLC locates one copy of this Hartford issue (Conn. Historical Society), and two copies of Worcester issues (both at Special Collections of the University of Pennsylvania – one with the same pagination as the present copy; the second copy with thirty-two pages).

Description
San Francisco, 1882. About good.. Folding map, 36.5 x 29.25 inches, plus 19pp. text. Map backed with linen, in original brown publisher's cloth covers. Spine partially perished, covers worn with loss to cloth; title page detached and text laid in. Map lightly toned, contemporary hand coloring. With several related items laid in. Large and handsome map of the Mexican state of Sinaloa printed in San Francisco. The map is based on surveys made by Frederick G. Weidner, a topographical and mining engineer who served as the state's surveyor. In his introductory text, Weidner claims this to be the first such map of Sinaloa. The accompanying text gives both general statistics and geological observations of the area. The additional material laid in includes two partial maps showing Sinaloa, one with what we presume to be Weidner's notations, as well as a sheet of handwritten notes. We locate two copies with the text at the University of California in OCLC, and two further copies of the map alone, at the Huntington and the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center.

"The Press and the Revolution" was a Soviet literary criticism magazine published between 1921 and 1930. The Editor in Chief, from 1921 to 1929, was Russian critic, journalist, and historian Viacheslav Polonskii and the Editorial Board included Anatolii Lunacharskii, N. Meshcheriakov, I. Stepanov-Skvortsov, and M. Pokrovskii. The journal’s wide variety of topics included history of literature and publishing, literary criticism, and essays on writing literature. It also frequently published book reviews. For those first nine years of existence, the magazine was widely read and respected and immensely popular. In late 1929 the editorship was reorganized, Polonskii was removed from his post, and the members of the Editorial Board were replaced with Valerian Pereverzev, I. Matsa, etc. Very soon the journal was said to had turned into a propaganda tool for Pereverzev's 'Litfront' - a left-wing splinter group of RAPP (Russian Association of Proletarian Writers). Losing its wide audience, it ceased to exist in 1930. The present issue included articles on Maxim Gorky and Alexander Block as well as book reviews of various literary and historical works.

Description
New York: Delta Omega Society, 1940. First English translation. ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF 19TH CENTURY EPIDEMIOLOGIC STUDY OF MEASLES ON THE FAROE ISLANDS. 13.5 x 20.5 cm hardcover, brown cloth binding, gilt title to spine, bookplate of Henry Rust O-Brien, M.D., to front paste-down, his signature on front free endpaper, i-xxxvii, 111 pp, tables. Very good in custom archival mylar cover. PETER LUDWIG PANUM (1820 – 1885) was a Danish physiologist and pathologist born on the island of Bornholm in Rønne. After completing his medical studies in 1845, Panum assumed a position at Almindelig Hospital in Copenhagen. During 1846 he was chosen by the government to undertake research of a measles epidemic in the Faroe Islands. As a result of his investigations which included examinations of the cultural practices, he published a classic treatise titled "Observations Made During the Epidemic of Measles on the Faroe Islands in the Year 1846". Later he studied with Rudolf Virchow at the University of Würzburg (1851), and with Claude Bernard in Paris (1852–53). From 1855 Panum was a professor at the University of Kiel, where he established a laboratory for physiology. In 1856, he published his research into what is now known as an endotoxin. This is now acknowledged as the first systematic and scientific studies of endotoxins, a substance once referred to as "putrid poison" that was thought to be responsible for symptoms and signs observed in individuals with sepsis. Cited by Pickover in The Medical Book. 250 Milestones in the History of Medicine (2012): ";. Among the most famous epidemiologists of the 1800s were Danish physiologist Peter Panum (who studied the spread of measles), John Snow (the spread of cholera), and English physician William Budd (the spread of typhoid fever). Panum's studv was of paramount importance, being among the first extensive contributions to the modern field of epidemiology. In 1846, the Danish government asked 26-year-old Panum to study the spread of measles in tlie Faroe Islands, located in the North Atlanhc Ocean. Although preventable today, the anti-vaccine movement is allowing its reappearance. In 1846, measles had not caused death in the Faroe Islands for 65 vears, but suddenly more than 6,000 of the 1782 inhabitants fell victim to measles. Coastal valleys separated the various populations of the islands, so the history of the disease in each small settlement could be studied in isolation from those in the others. By studying the various villages, Panum determined that the incubation period for measles was about two weeks. He also supplied evidence of longlasting immunitv by interviewing old people who had been infected many years earlier, none of whom contracted measles in 1846. Panum was convinced that measles was spread infectious agents via contaminated articles or by close human contact." PROVENANCE: HENRY RUST O'BRIEN (1891 - 1970) earned his M.D. from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1919. His first tour of duty in Siam was with the Department of Public Health under the Rockefeller Foundation, from 1921-1923. His work there focused on effective control of the hookworm. After his return to the U.S. in 1923, he worked as an assistant resident in surgery at the Cincinnati General Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1925 he was appointed as a missionary to Siam by the PCUSA Board of Foreign Missions. Description
Sarasota, Florida: Pineapple Press, 2004. First Edition. Quarto, softbound (slick, full-color photo. illustrated stiff wrappers), 67 pp. Fine (New). From lower cover: The gopher tortoise is a very important animal, an excellent representation of all the upland wildlife in the Southeast United States. The gopher tortoise has been around for hundreds of thousands of years, but now, as humans encroach on their habitat, they find themselves in a desperate struggle for territory and food, indeed for the very survival of their species. And survive they must. The survival of so many other species depends on them. The burrow of a gopher tortoise provides shelter (and sometimes food) to 300-400 other species. Within these dark tunnels made and maintained by the gopher tortoise, species have been found that live nowhere else on earth. Even the human species depends on the health of the gopher tortoise and its entire natural community.

Description
New York: Dell Books, 1983. First Edition. Mass Market Paperback. Very Good. 6x4x1. First edition. Edges toned, bottom corner of front wrapper creased. 1983 Mass Market Paperback. 352 pp. At thirty-three, Nick DelCorso is an award-winning war photographer who has seen action and dodged bullets all over the world–most notably in Vietnam, where he served as an Army photographer and recorded combat scenes whose horrors have not yet faded in his memory. When he is called back to Vietnam on assignment during a North Vietnamese attempt to take Saigon, he is faced with a defining choice: should he honor the commitment he has made to his wife not to place himself in any more danger for the sake of his career, or follow his ambition back to the war-torn land that still haunts his dreams? What follows is a riveting story of war on two fronts, Saigon and Beirut, that will test DelCorso's faith not only in himself, but in the nobler instincts of men.
