Description
Philadelphia, 1851. unbound. very good. Excellent content A.L.S. 4to, 2 pages, Philadelphia, November 29th 1851, an uncharacteristically chatty communication addressed to 'Dear Friend', in part: "...I can wait no longer for dame fortune to smile, she seems to have given me the cold shoulder in the most unkind manner, yet I trust she will grow warmer as I continue to the south: how gratifying it is not to be disappointed, the picture is doing just as well as I expected! People here are most kind, they give me plenty of pretty speeches, parties and dinners; but no, not one commission! Therefore I shall leave Baltimore on Monday or Tuesday with, to attend to those I mentioned to you. My picture can be sent on when I have made arrangements for it, in the City of Monuments. I am happy to inform you that the head of Mr. Fry & his father are among the best things I have ever painted, be assured, that this part is most pleasing to me. This morning I am going to the house of my old friend Thomas Sully to make a sketch of his head, which will always be to me a pleasure souvenir; after the sitting we are to pay a visit to Rembrandt Peale. Last Tuesday evening I passed a pleasant two hours at the house of our friend George Hewitt Cushman, he showed me several of his miniatures with which I was greatly pleased for they are sweetly painted; his wife and sister sang extremely well ... I hope I shall be able to see them again before I take leave of this nice regular city..." Boldly signed and in fine condition. *When Healy was sixteen years of age he was befriended by Jane Stuart, daughter of the great artist Gilbert Stuart, who introduced him to Thomas Sully, by whose advice Healy greatly profited and later gratefully repaid Sully in the days of the latter's adversity. [American Artist: Vol. 32- page 420.] This is without doubt one of the best Healy letters to come to market in the past thirty years and is priced accordingly. American portrait painter considered one of the most prolific and talented artists of his day, and his sitters included many of the eminent personages of his time.

Description
NY: Playbill, 1981. Soft cover. Very Good. Playbill for the original 1981 Broadway production of Merrily We Roll Along, that was distinguished when it was first produced as one of Sondheim's least successful musicals, opening on November 16, 1981 and closing after just 16 performances and 44 previews. It was also the last musical that Sondheim and producer/ director Hal Prince worked on together after collaborating on a phenomenal string of critically acclaimed musicals (Company, A Little Night Music, Follies). SIGNED BY SONDHEIM on the front cover. A production, directed by Maria Friedman, that began at the Menier Chocolate Factory in 2013, which came to Broadway in 2023 changed critical reaction, bringing Merrily more stature in the Sondheim canon than before. Sondheim's signatures without inscriptions are uncommon. Given the short run of the original production, one of the more collectible Playbills, and uncommon signed by the master. Stapled spine, 130 pages, gently toned, short tear bottom rear cover closed with archival tape.

Rockport, Maine: Down East Books, 2000. Ephemera no binding. Fine. Kelly Paul BRIGGS. [ORIGINAL ILLUSTRATION ART] [JUVENILE]. SIGNED by the ARTIST. Original art: 15 ½" x 15 ½" mat size; 5 5/8" x 5 5/8" image size. Original illustration art from Lighthouse Lullaby by mid-coast Maine author and artist Kelly Briggs. The thirteenth illustration found in the book on page 28 pictures a sailing ship at night, a lantern lighting its sails, and a lighthouse beam on the shore. "Sailing ships are passing by, / Bound for ports like Baltimore. / The beacon lamp is burning bright / To steer them from the rocky shore.". The work is done in the pointillist technique using tiny dots of color to define the space and create an image. This technique was first described by Georges Seurat and Paul Signac in 1886 as part of the Neo-Impressionist movement. This painting along with several others was in an exhibition at the Farnsworth Museum, Rockland, Maine. A charming story of a lighthouse keeper and his family living on a remote Maine island. The author explains, "Island living was not easy, but they took pleasure in simple things that we now sometimes take for granted-a warm bed, a roof over our heads, and someone to love us." Ms. Briggs is a mostly self-taught artist, born and living on the coast of Maine. She is part of the Farnsworth Museum's Arts in Education Teaching Artist in Rockland, Maine. PLEASE NOTE: This does not include a copy of the book, Lighthouse Lullaby.

Description
A4 flyer, black & white illus. on recto, details to verso, horizontal folds. Düsseldorf: Konrad Fischer, 1967. The rare flyer for Posenenske's debut exhibition at Konrad Fischer's newly established gallery, Fischer paired this show with one for Hanne Darboven (1941-2009) at his Neubrückstrasse address. Both began on 5 December. The recto reproduces a contact sheet of photographs of her work. "Fischer's second exhibition was dedicated to two women artists from Europe: Hanne Darboven...presented her Konstruktionen (Constructions, 1966-67), comprising approximately 120 drawings in pencil and ink on blue graph paper, while Posenenske monopolized most of the narrow space with a combination of four-sided cardboard ducts from her Vierkantrohre Serie DW (Square Tubes Series DW) (1967). Posenenske's work met with an enthusiastic response in Düsseldorf. One regional critic applauded the 'brutal absolutism' of 'pure form' with which her serially conceived work broke new ground in sculpture by using all the 'radicalism of monumental form."-Isabelle Malz, "'Bizarre, but Debatable' or a 'Good Deal Less Art': Charlotte Posenenske's Consistently Radical Work and Contemporary Reactions to It," Charlotte Posenenske: Work in Progress, p. 89. In excellent condition. WorldCat records a single example in North American libraries (as of June 2026). ❧ D. The number 4973 at the bottom identifies this as a product of the Political Poster Workshop at Berkeley in 1970. In the Maggs Bros book "4973: Berkeley Protest Posters 1970," this design is not illustrated. Initials of the unknown artist, DKM, are at lower right. Participants in the Political Poster Workshop practiced the techniques of silkscreened poster production on sheets of used computer printout paper or other random stock. Most of the products of this workshop are scarce, for obvious reasons.
