Description
Lyon: Mathieu Liberal, 1681. Contemporary mottled calf (scuffed, tail of spine chipped), spine and label gilt, edges sprinkled red. Old pen trials on the pastedowns and flyleaves. Minor dampstaining and some lower corners gnawed. A genuine copy. Second edition of this handbook of physiognomy. Written over a century before Lavater’s landmark book on the subject, this little-known text purports to identify vices, virtues, and intellect based on such features as hair color, finger length, and nose proportions. Couched in humoral theory and Galenic physiology, it instructs the reader to intuit people’s personality traits based on physical appearance, walking gait, laughter, and speech. A handy table at the end of the book is divided according to desirable characteristics, with a list of the physical qualities that portend them along with text concordances. Dorbon 2411; see Caillet 5874.

Philadelphia: Printed by W. Ross, near Congress-Hall, 1797. 10, [148] pp, as issued. Bound in later quarter calf and marbled paper over boards, contemporary spine label. Folding table at the end of Document No. 4. Very Good. Secretary of State Pickering, whose report runs through page 10, discloses that "armed vessels of Spain, Great-Britain and France" have captured American vessels since 1 October 1796. Spanish ships have done so "almost daily." British captures "have not been numerous." France is the major culprit, particularly in the West Indies, which "have exhibited the most lamentable scenes of depredation." The Report, dated 21 June 1797, lists, in six detailed documents, hundreds of assaults on American maritime commerce. Evans 33053. ESTC W26151.

Description
Santa Clara, California: RDO/Publications, 1985 Limited edition (Volume 48 in the Great World Series Program Collection). One of 1,000 numbered copies, this being number 732. Signed by DiMaggio in blue marker on front wrapper. Publisher's red wrappers, with Grant Powers illustration to front wrapper, lettered in white and black, and Lucky Strike advertisement to rear wrapper. Fine, with just a hint of wear to corners. Overall, a beautiful copy. As this program states: "With the exception of this title page, and the section entitled Commentary (courtesy Fred Lieb), this publication is an exact reproduction of the 1937 World Series Program sold at Yankee Stadium, New York for the 1937 games between the New York Yankees and the New York Giants." In the 1937 World Series, the Yankees defeated the Giants for the second straight year, four games to one. In the series, DiMaggio batted .273, and hit an important solo home run in game five to help the team clinch victory. Joe DiMaggio played all thirteen seasons of his career with the New York Yankees and was selected as an All-Star thirteen times. With his exemplary hitting and fielding (he was nicknamed "The Yankee Clipper" because of how he sailed around the outfield) he helped power the Yankees to nine World Series titles. He holds the record for the longest hitting streak, at 56 games, which is considered one of the most statistically remarkable records in all of sports. Outside of baseball, he was known for his high-profile marriage with Marilyn Monroe. DiMaggio was one of the rare athletes that transcended his sport: his association with a bygone era of America was noted in Simon and Garfunkel's Grammy Award-winning song, "Mrs. Robinson." Ted Williams said, "His career cannot be summed up in numbers and awards. It might sound corny, but he had a profound impact on the country.". Signed. Limited Edition. Original Wrappers. Fine.

Description
1946. This archive of six pulp novels showcases mid-20th-century themes of forbidden love, crime, and societal tension, reflecting the cultural undercurrents of their time. The collection spans from 1952 to 1965 and provides a window into the era's storytelling styles, with narratives that range from noir-inspired dramas to sensational exposés. [1] Paul Gregory, The Office Couch, Beacon Signal Books, 1962. This risqué novel takes readers behind the scenes of executive suites, exploring seduction, power, and the dynamics of workplace relationships. Known for its provocative tagline, "This novel dares to tell the truth!", it epitomizes pulp fiction's willingness to blur the lines between sensationalism and critique. Good condition overall. [2] Donald R. Morris, Warm Bodies, Permabooks, 1959. A wry and humorous tale examining the lives of men, women, and naval recruits, Warm Bodies juxtaposes wacky antics with sharp commentary on gender roles and interpersonal relationships. The cover art features lively caricatures of naval personnel in comical situations, giving a sense of the book's lighthearted yet incisive tone. Donald R. Morris, who was both a journalist and novelist, brought a distinctively satirical voice to this work, capturing the cultural attitudes of post-war America. This title from Permabooks is a standout for its blend of comedy and social observation. Very good condition overall. [3] Robert O. Saber, Sucker Bait, Graphic Publishing Company, 1955. Set in the murky underworld of con artists and femme fatales, this gripping noir follows the dangerous allure of crime. Saber, a pen name for Paul Little, delivers a gritty narrative of betrayal and seduction. The evocative tagline, "A graphic mystery," adds to its pulp appeal. Good condition overall. [4] Phil Hirsch, Hollywood Uncensored, Pyramid Books, 1965. A scandalous exposé of Hollywood's hidden secrets, Hollywood Uncensored blends celebrity gossip with societal critique, focusing on the murkier side of fame. Featuring stars like John Wayne and Jayne Mansfield, this first printing offers a salacious glimpse into the entertainment industry. Good condition overall. [5] Sara Harris, The Wayward Ones, Signet Books, 1954. Harris's novel portrays life in a girls' reformatory, examining the struggles of young women caught in cycles of societal rejection. The cover art is striking, featuring a somber image of a young woman staring out of a barred window, symbolizing the themes of confinement and resilience. Harris, an accomplished journalist, brought a deep understanding of social reform to this work, making it a poignant commentary on the failures and possibilities of institutional systems. With its stark realism and powerful narrative, the novel stands as a critical work on the treatment of women in mid-century America. Very good condition overall. [6] Pierre Louÿs, Aphrodite: A Great Pagan Love Story, Avon Books, 1946. This adaptation of Louÿs's classic erotic novel transports readers to ancient Greece, where themes of passion, power, and societal constraints intertwine. The cover features lush, colorful artwork depicting a sensuous Grecian woman surrounded by mythological elements, evoking the novel's blend of eroticism and historical fantasy. Pierre Louÿs, a celebrated French poet and writer, was known for his explorations of sensuality and aestheticism, and Aphrodite remains one of his most significant works. The book's enduring appeal lies in its ability to merge timeless themes with vivid storytelling. Good condition overall. This archive captures the multifaceted nature of pulp fiction, offering narratives that range from scandalous exposés to dramatic explorations of human behavior. Each title contributes to the broader tapestry of mid-century literary culture, making this a compelling addition for collectors and scholars alike. Overall, the archive is in good to very good condition.

Description
Germany: Kunsthaus Bregenz, 2004. First edition. Generally a clean copy with no internal markings; cloth with a few minor marks. 12 x 11 inches. 128 pages. Profusely illustrated in color. Original cloth. "The politics of U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East is the subject of Truth Before Power, Jenny Holzer's recent Kunsthaus Bregenz project. The complicated dialectic of decision-making and public debate, as it has unfolded through the presidencies of Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, William Jefferson Clinton, and George W. Bush, is explored in texts devoted to such issues as the international trade in arms and oil, the war on terrorism, 9/11, the FBI and CIA, and Congress's oversight of the intelligence community. For the most part, the installation's text has been taken verbatim from U.S. government documents--many of which were classified at the time they were written. Under the landmark Freedom of Information Act passed in 1966, all are now public record, though some remain heavily redacted. This illustrated catalogue includes selections from declassified U.S. government documents, Henri Cole's poem To the Forty-third President, and highlights from Holzer's own writing. Color photographs document Holzer's installations at the Kunsthaus and the Johanniterkirche in Feldkirch, and the eight xenon light projections staged in Vorarlberg" (the publisher).
