Description
[Edited by Ignaz von Born & Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich von Trebra]. Two fine & large mezzotint vignettes on titles, 13 folding engraved plates & maps, three folding printed tables, & one engraving in the text. 4 p.l., 408, [12] pp.; 2 p.l., 468, [4] pp. Two vols. Large 4to, cont. half-calf & dark red boards (corners a bit worn, minor rubbing), flat spines gilt, green morocco lettering pieces on spines. Leipzig: G.J. Goeschen, 1789-90. First edition and very scarce; this is a complete copy with all 13 plates. Born and Trebra were the founders, in 1786 at Szkleno in Hungary, of the Societät der Bergbaukunde, which had the purpose of increasing knowledge in the areas of geology, mining, mineralogy, and metallurgy. It was a very international scientific society, and other early members included von Heynitz, Lavoisier, Gmelin, Charpentier, Ferber, Poda, Hawkins, and Goethe. This is the first (and only?) publication of the society; “hierin findet sich alles Wissenswerthe des Bergfachs nach dem damaligen Stande der Wissenschaft und Erfahrung vortrefflich und eingehend erörtert.”–A.D.B., Vol. 38, p. 551. The first 34 pages of Vol. I print the society’s plans and by-laws. The remainder of the two volumes contains numerous contributions concerning various mining activities in Germany, Hungary, France, England, Mexico, etc. Each title-page vignette is an extremely attractive mezzotint, and the plates depict geological cross-sections, maps of mining areas, machinery, etc. Fine set of this attractive book. ❧ D.S.B., II, pp. 315-16 & XIII, pp. 455-56. Mikulas Teich, “Born’s Amalgamation Process and the International Metallurgic Gathering at Skleno in 1786” in Annals of Science, 32 (1975), pp. 305-40.

Description
New York: Springer-Verlag, 1986. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED BY WARHOL TO DIVINE: "to divine / love / Andy Warhol". Also with four illustrations signed by Warhol. Exquisitely illustrated with sixteen color plates after screenprints by Warhol. Additionally inscribed to Divine by (presumably) his manager Bernard Jay. A wonderful association copy uniting two of the most headline-grabbing stars of the 80s. Warhol was, well, Warhol, and Divine was the drag-queen star of John Waters' classic films who became a cult icon. On Vanishing Animals: "Kurt Benirschke's lecture on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Springer-Verlag New York became a valuable book in 1986: Vanishing Animals, illustrated by Andy Warhol. An extraordinary combination of objective information and artistically impressive illustrations, it promoted an awareness of the importance of the preservation of species." (Sawkowski and Gotze, Springer-Verlag: 1945-1992). Animals discussed include: the California condor, river dolphin, mouse armadillo, wild horse, giant peccary, okapi, whooping crane, Komodo monitor, Sumatra rhinoceros, douc langur, Sommerring's gazelle, and Galapagos tortoise. Benirschke was a pioneering geneticist, pathologist, and conservationist known for his work in reproductive biology and the preservation of endangered species. In 1976 he helped establish the Center for the Reproduction of Endangered Species (CRES) at the San Diego Zoo, which advanced research on animal genetics and reproduction and created the first "frozen zoo" for the preservation of frozen cells and reproductive material of highly endangered species. In addition to the Warhol illustrations, Vanishing Animals contains photographs of animals at the San Diego Zoo. Warhol's signed in marker on the front free endpaper, taking up about half the page. Facing it, on the front pastedown is the (more modestly) written inscription: "To Divi: / Merry Christmas, 1986 / Love Jay". "Jay" was almost certainly Bernard Jay, Divine's manager. The illustrations signed in marker by Warhol include: Sömmerring's Gazelle (p3), Mouse Armadillo (p23), Bats (p.71), and (again) Sömmerring's Gazelle (p.83). New York: Springer-Verlag, 1986. Square quarto (approx. 10.5x10.5 in), original decorated cloth, original dust jacket. Some residue at top of front flap and light imprint from this residue on the endpaper signed by Warhol (far from Warhol inscription), a little rubbing and some scratches to dust jacket. A beautiful and important book with a wonderful association.

Les Frères d'Armes. Par Th. Midy. Ullustré de six superbes gravures a deux teints par V. Adam et Morel-Fatio. Paris: Librairie d'Éducation, A. Courcier, Éditeur, [1860]. First edition. Folio (12 x 8 3/4 inches; 305 x 222 mm.). [1-2, half-title, verso blank], [3-4 vignette title, verso blank], [5]-38, [1, table des matières], [1, advertsisements] pp. Six fine hand colored lithograph plates. Plates lithographed by Sarazin. Publisher's color pictorial boards, head and tail of spine chipped, joints slightly cracked, but still a remarkable survival of a very fragile pictorial binding. The text and hand colored plates bright and fresh. Feint early ink inscription (dated 1876) on front free endpaper. The six hand colored lithograph plates include scenes from The Battle of Magenta which was fought in 1959 during the Second Italian War of Independence; the British and French Navy bombarding the Russian coastal fortifications at Kinburn in 1855 after an Anglo-French ground force had besieged them; and the French forces celebrating their attack against the Russian forces and subsequent capture on the Malakoff redoubt on 8 September 1855 as a part of the siege of Sebastopol during the Crimean War. OCLC locates just one copy in libraries and institutions worldwide: Kunstbiblio Staatliche zu Berlin (Germany) Jean-Victor Adam (1801-1867) was a French painter and lithographer. Born in Paris he was the son of Jean Adam, an esteemed engraver. During the years 1814 to 1818 he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, and also in the ateliers of Meynier and Régnault. In 1819 he exhibited 'Herminia succouring Tancred.' He was almost immediately afterwards employed to paint various subjects for the Museum at Versailles, amongst which are, 'The Entry of the French into Mainz,' 'The Battle of Varroux,' 'The Taking of Menin, 'The Battle of Castiglione,' 'The Passage of the Cluse,' 'The Battle of Montebello,' 'The Capitulation of Meiningen;' the last three in association with Alaux. He also exhibited down to the year 1838: 'Henry IV., after the Battle of Coutras,' 'Trait of Kindness in the Duke de Berri,' 'The Postillion,' 'The Vivandiere,' 'The Road to Poissy,' 'The Return from the Chase,' 'Horse-fair at Caen,' and numerous other subjects. He then retired from publicity, till 1846, when he appeared as the exhibitor of some works in lithography, to which branch of art he afterwards restricted himself. In this line he produced a lithographic album, 'Views in the Environs of Paris,' 'Studies of Animals for an edition of Buffon,' &c. He obtained a gold medal in 1824, a second class medal in 1836, besides several others from Lille, Douai, and other cities. He died at Viroflay in 1866. Antoine Léon Morel, later Morel-Fatio (1810-1871) was a French naval painter, Peintre officiel de la Marine, curator of the naval and ethnographic museum of the Louvre, and mayor of the 20th arrondissement of Paris. He added Fatio in 1844 to distinguish himself from a businessman of the same name. It was apparently in reference to a Swiss branch of the family. The Plates: 1. Bataille de Magenta - The Battle of Magenta 2. Un Marché dans une Petite Ville en Russie - A Market in a small town in Russia 3. Une Noce en Bretagne - A Wedding in Brittany 4. La Flotte Devant Kinburn - The Fleet in front of Kinburn 5. La Flotte Devant Schwaborg - The Fleet in front of Schwaborg 6. Prise de Malakoff - The taking of Malakoff.

Description
2007. SAINT-AUBIN, Gabriel. Placets de l'officier Desbans. Preface by Neil MacGregor, Director, British Museum. 62 pp. Illustrated with 15 facsimile drawings by Gabriel Saint-Aubin, plus a few head- and tail-pieces. Folio, 360 x 235 mm, bound in full red silk over boards, with the gilt-stamped coat-of-arms of Marie-Antoinette on both covers. Paris: 1775 (i.e. London: Roxburghe Club, 2007). Privately printed for members of the Roxburghe Club. This is a facsimile edition of an original French eighteenth-century manuscript produced in Paris in 1775. Edme-Louis Desbans, born 1728, wrote his own text and orchestrated the production of this superlative manuscript as a petition for his advancement in the French Army. It was intended for two readers only: Marie-Antoinette, the new Queen of France, and her husband Louis XVI. Desbans flatters the new Queen as a patron of a new taste in the arts, architecture, fashion, music (as supporter of her fellow Austrian composer Gluck), and symbolic mother of her adopted nation. For Louis XVI, the petition becomes more down-to-earth and appeals to his sense of majesty, fairness and duty as head of the French nation and the French army. The heart and soul of this Placet can be found in the exquisite pen and wash drawings by Saint-Aubin, which accompany the particular points Desbans is trying to make with the King and the Queen. Two of the most captivating drawings show the performance of Gluck's Iphigénie en Aulide attended by Marie-Antoinette and the Coronation scene of Louis XVI at Rheims on 12 June 1775. The manuscript was in the possession of Baron Pichon in the late nineteenth century. It then passed into the collection Baron Maurice de Rothschild. In 1963 it was acquired by Mrs Charles Wrightsman of New York. The facsimile was printed by Santiago Saavedra Ediciones of Madrid. Limited to 75 copies printed for gift and for sale.

New York: Frederick A. Stokes Company. Near Fine in Near Fine dj. 1935. First Edition. Hardcover. (with a Triangle Books (reissue) dust jacket) [a nice clean copy with no significant wear, just a one-time owner's name plus date & place of purchase and a brief comment (all in ink) on the half-title page; the jacket is also in beautiful condition, with only some very minor edgewear, all the more remarkable because Triangle Books editions were not known for their production quality]. (illustrated endpaper map) First edition of the ninth Ellery Queen novel (actually the tenth EQ book if you count the 1934 short-story collection "The Adventures of Ellery Queen"), in which a one-eyed giant kidnaps a young heiress and her uncle. This was the final novel in Queen's first period, all books of which shared the "Challenge to the Reader" feature, henceforth abandoned (as were the "Problem in Deduction" subtitles); it was also the first of his works to be adapted for a film (in 1935, with Donald Cook in the role of Ellery). The mismatched jacket (which was on the book as we received it) is probably from a relatively early (pre-1940) Triangle reprint, which retains the same artwork as the first edition jacket (later Triangle printings used different art). (A facsimile of the actual first edition jacket is available (not from us), however, should you wish to dress it up a bit more properly.) .
