Simon studied for several years under Jacques Alexander, at the NAD, Académie Julian in Paris, and learned the art of wood cutting from the Japanese. His wood engravings of the Bohemian life of Paris were widely acclaimed abroad while his etchings and paintings were well received both in California and New York by art critics in the 1920s. Simon was a resident of San Francisco in 1927-32. He died in White Plains, NY on Oct. 15, 1979. Exh: Calif. Society of Etchers.

[nice tight crisp copy, faint wear to cloth at spine extremities; jacket is very clean, slight fading to spine, short diagonal closed tears at top corners]. The author's first novel, about a young American girl at a Swiss boarding school and her eventual "transition to womanhood" in Rome, where she becomes the target of various suitors, who may or may not be fortune-hunters. (Seems that she's heir to some fortune or other, but her parents have managed to conceal this fact from her, so as to not, you know, mess her up.) The author, per the jacket blurb, had an educational background quite similar to that of her "intelligent, deeply sensitive and well-poised" heroine; fancy that. And yet she ended up in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, married, with three kids. .
