Description
1854. McKENNEY, Thomas and HALL, James. History of the Indian Tribes of North America, with Biographical Sketches and Anecdotes of the Principal Chiefs… Philadelphia: D. Rice and A. N. Hart, 1854. Three volumes. Royal octavo, publisher's full brown morocco expertly rebacked with original spines neatly laid down, blind-tooled boards and spines, raised bands, all edges gilt. $25,000.Second octavo edition of one of the most recognized and desirable American color plate books produced in the 19th century, illustrated with 120 splendid fully hand-colored lithographic plates by J.T. Bowen after Charles Bird King's original oil paintings, ""the most colorful portraits of Indians ever executed"" (Howes). Handsome in publisher's deluxe morocco.Convinced that Indian tribes of North America would soon vanish and their culture be forgotten, the Superintendent of Indian Affairs under four presidents, T. L. McKenney, commissioned this magnificent work to educate the public about Native American culture, and to preserve the images of the greatest warriors and chiefs for posterity in a series of beautiful portraits. Most of the original oil portraits were painted from life in the studio of Charles Bird King, to whom McKenney brought many of the subjects. The rest were copied from watercolors executed in the field by a young frontier artist named James Otto Lewis. Once finished the portraits were housed in the Smithsonian, where they remained until an 1865 fire burned down the institution and destroyed most of the paintings. As a result the rare folio and the splendid octavo editions are vital and important for their ""faithful recording of the features and dress of celebrated American Indians who lived and died long before the age of photography… McKenney's portfolios are truly a landmark in American culture"" (McKenney-Hall Portrait Gallery, 23). Howes M129. Sabin 43411. Field 992. Early ownership signature of James Aitken Meigs, noted Philadelphia physician, teacher and anthropologist, in each volume.Handsome full publisher's morocco very neatly rebacked with original spines laid down; a few small scuffs, minor color restoration to extremities. Plates extraordinarily clean and bright. An excellent copy, expertly refurbished.

Description
1804. First Edition. GIBBON, Edward. The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. Philadelphia: William Y. Birch & Abraham Small, 1804-05. Eight volumes. Octavo, contemporary full brown tree calf gilt, burgundy morocco spine labels. $9800.First American edition set, of one of the greatest classics of Western thought, with three folding engraved maps, in a beautiful contemporary binding.""This masterpiece of historical penetration and literary style has remained one of the ageless historical works… Gibbon brought a width of vision and a critical mastery of the available sources which have not been equaled to this day; and the result was clothed in an inimitable prose"" (PMM 222). ""For 22 years Gibbon was a prodigy of steady and arduous application. His investigations extended over almost the whole range of intellectual activity for nearly 1500 years… it is not merely the learning of his work, learned as it is, that gives it character as a history. It is also that ingenious skill by which the vast erudition, the boundless range, the infinite variety, and the gorgeous magnificence of the details are all wrought together in a symmetrical whole… It is still entitled to be esteemed as the greatest historical work ever written"" (Adams, Manual of Historical Literature, 146-7). The first edition of Gibbon's History was published in England in six volumes from 1776 to 1788. It was of great interest to American readers, who were taught Roman history from an early age, “a common reference point for the educated classes… At pivotal moments in history, the shadow of ancient Rome has dramatically shaped perceptions of the present. The Founding Fathers of the United States were no exception. They found the history of Rome utterly compelling and for many of the same reasons as people today, but amid the fervour of the American Revolution, the Founding Fathers drew upon Roman history for the unique task of creating a republic…This went further than a superficial interest in ancient Rome. Classical republicanism was at the heart of the Founding. American colonists had relied on translations of the original Roman texts by radical Whigs such as Thomas Gordon, Basil Kennet, Walter Moyle, and Edward Wortley Montagu. Learning from antiquity would help America to avoid the same mistakes that had befallen ancient Rome and now Britain” (David Cowan). “Copies of Plutarch and Livy were brought to the Continental Congress…while the Federalist Papers were written under pen-names like Caesar, Brutus, and Publius, and John Adams attributed his world view to Cicero…When George Washington deigned not to hold a third term, he was compared to the noble dictator Cincinnatus who dropped his sword for a plow” (Ed Simon). It was natural that the Founding Fathers discovered Gibbon. John Adams began reading the available volumes of Gibbon by the winter of 1787, finishing the first volume by the end of the year and beginning the second in January 1788 (it was slow going for him, writing “if a book does not interest me exceedingly it is a task too me to go through it; and I fear for this reason I shall never get through Gibbon. Indolence, indolence, I fear will be my ruin”). During the same period Jefferson was recommending the book on his various reading lists, and James Madison referred to it in his 1787 notes in his Ancient and Modern Confederacies. So it is little wonder that by 1804, demand had grown enough in America that a publisher in Philadelphia printed it in this country for the first time, claiming that it would be “the most complete Edition of Gibbon extant,” as it would include Memoirs of My Life and Writing at the end of the last volume. Norton, 102. Scattered foxing to text, a bit of dampstaining to first few leaves of Volume I and last few leaves of Volume VIII; expertly repaired closed tear to last leaf of Volume III, affecting text but not readability; expert paper repairs to G1 and G2 in Volume V, affecting side notes but not readability. Folding maps with offsetting and light embrowning, as is typical of the era. Beautifully bound.

FIRST ENGLISH EDITION . *** **** *** . . . A FABULOUS & EARLY JESUIT ACCOUNT . . . OF LIFE IN CHINA . . . A FASCINATING 1655 PRIMARY RESOURCE . *** SUBTITLE: continued: "Together with the Traffic & Commodities of that Country. Now put into English by a Person of Quality, and Illustrated with Several Maps and Figures, to Satisfy the Curious & Advance the Trade of Great Britain." . THE FIRST & BEST ENGLISH EDITION: This is the First English translation of the original Italian title Semedo wrote in 1643: RELATIONE DELLA GRANDE MONARCHIA DELLA CINA, translated into English, by "A Person of Quality." . *** WRITTEN IN "OLD" ENGLISH" These two titles were written in "Old English" of the period & commonly used "F" for "S" therefore below, we faithfully repeat the spelling on the title page, as issued. . *** THE AUTHOR: FATHER ALVAREZ F. SEMEDO, S.J. [1585/86?-1658] Semedo was a Portuguese Jesuit, and was known by variant names depending on which language was used: Álvaro de Semedo, in Latin: Alvarus de Semedo. In China he was known as Xie Wulu and later as Zeng Dezhao. He lived and worked some 20 years in China. . *** BIOGRAPHY OF THE AUTHOR: Álvaro Semedo was born in Nisa, Portugal in 1585 or 1586. He entered the Jesuit novitiate in 1602, and on 29 March 1608, he left for Goa and the Far East aboard Nossa Sra. do Vencimento. He arrived in Macao [Aomen] in 1610, and Nanjing in 1613. Along with another Jesuit, Alfonso Vagnoni, he was imprisoned during an anti-Christian campaign in Nanjing in 1616 and then sent back to Macao [Aomen in Chinese, a Portuguese Colony], where he stayed until 1621. . As the persecution campaign in the mainland China abated, Fr. Semedo changed his Chinese name from Xie Wulu to Zeng Dezhao and re-entered China, now working in Jiangsu and Jiangnan provinces. He spent most of his term in China in the central and southern provinces. Perhaps his only trip north was made to Xi'an in 1625, during which he was the first European to see the recently unearthed Nestorian Stele. . In 1636, Semedo went back to Europe as a procurator, sent by his Order to recruit people for the China mission and to ensure continued assistance from the church in Europe. During his sojourn in Europe, he published a long report on China, best known under its Spanish title, IMPERIO DE LA CHINA. . After his return to China, Semedo served in Guangzhou [Old Canton Guangdong] as the Vice-Provincial of the Jesuit China Mission. During several years after the fall of Beijing to the Manchus in 1644, he continued to work with the Ming loyalist regimes in the Southern China [notably, sending Michal Boym to the court of the Southern Ming Yongli Emperor], even as most of Jesuits elsewhere in China were switching their loyalty to the recently established Qing Dynasty. Once the Qing took Canton, Semedo was detained, but was freed a few months later, reportedly due to the interference of Beijing-based Johann Adam Schall von Bell. He spent the rest of his life in Guangzhou, where he died. . *** CONTENTS: Semedo arrived in China in 1613, and wrote about the general kingdom of China, based on his travels, with very lucid commentaries on the thirteen provinces, reporting on each. Chinese habits, manners, language, doctors, books, sciences, arts, civilization, games, marriage, funerals, religion, superstitions, sacrifices, military, arms, role of Tartars, Kings & Queens, nobility, government, peculiarities, Mandarin badges, law, prisons, punishments, Moors, Jews, Christians. With some good focus on preaching of the Gospel. Persecutions of Fathers [Catholics] in Nanking & Peking and other places, martyrdom of Christians. Supplement of the cruel war with the Tartars. . *** VALUABLE PRIMARY RESOURCE A nicely done early and valuable primary source and stunning middle 17th. century historical primary work on China by resident Jesuits. . *** COPPER ENGRAVED PAGES: PLEASE NOTE: Not all copies have these plates. New York: The Viking Press, 1939 First edition, first printing; in the original first issue dust jacket, with the original ($2.75) price and "First Edition" to corner of front flap. Publisher's beige cloth, boards illustrated with an image of migrant families heading West after Elmer Hader's dust jacket design, pictorial endpapers illustrated with sheet music for the "The Battle Hymn the Republic"; in its original dust jacket with an illustration by Hader depicting tenant farming families looking out on a caravan of migrant families heading West across a valley towards a mountain range. Very good book, with light toning to spine, a touch of soiling to top right of front board, some spotting to top- and fore edge, small bookshop label to front pastedown, some offsetting to endpapers, and trace of bookplate removal to verso of front free endpaper; very good unclipped dust jacket, with light toning to spine, some very shallow chipping to spine ends, a few nicks and small closed tears here and there, 1.5 inch closed tear to foot of spine, and some creasing to bottom edge of rear panel. Overall, a sturdy and attractive copy of this iconic work of 20th century literature. In this powerful and compelling novel, Steinbeck tells the story of a poor "Okie" family, who travels westward to California after their home state of Oklahoma is decimated by the Dust Bowl in the 1930's. Steinbeck's keen sense of human emotion and humanitarian interest in the plight of the tenant farmer make this novel a classic and timeless masterpiece that provides a unique insight into the history of the American Midwest. Symbolizing the novel's motifs of sacrifice and the American dream, The Grapes of Wrath takes its title from Julia Ward Howe's "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," whose lyrics reference the Biblical apocalypse and divine deliverance from oppression. The Grapes of Wrath won both the National Book Award in 1939 and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1940. It was also considered a major contributing factor in Steinbeck's 1962 awarding of the Nobel Prize in Literature.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

Description
N.p.: N.p., 1968. Archive of 46 vintage vernacular photographs of a model airliner in wind tunnel tests, circa 1967-1968. All photographs with an internal reference number, printed from the negative, on the lower right of the image. The photographs on offer are almost certainly internally-produced reference photographs taken during the development of Boeing's 747 airliner, and were likely taken at Boeing's Seattle wind tunnel model shop. Development of the world's first twin-aisle airliner, Boeing's 747, began in 1965 under the supervision of Malcolm T. Stamper, then head of Boeing's turbine division (and later Boeing's longest serving president). Engineer Joe Sutter, commonly known as "the father of the 747," headed the design team, and in 1966, aerospace manufacturer Pratt and Whitney developed the JT9D, the first high-bypass-ratio turbofan engine powerful enough for the wide-body airliner. The first 747 was rolled out of Boeing's custom-built Everett Plant on September 20, 1968, and on February 9, 1969, the first flight took place. The airliner was certified in December of 1969, and entered service with Pan Am Airlines on January 22, 1970. 5 x 4 inches. Remnants of cello tape on the margins of the rectos, else Near Fine.

New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1931. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Very Good. 8vo., 319pp. Beautiful First Edition of this scarce mystery. Bound in black cloth with titles in yellow on the spine and cat and feather motif on front board. Square, tight and clean throughout with little or no where. A hint of page toning but barely and no foxing. Remarkably well-preserved. Very attractive unclipped wrapper, ($2.00), has some small tape repairs on the inside edges and hinges but not visible from the front. Rubbing to hinges nicks to the spine ends. Spine panel toning. Still solid and bright and impossible to find in any condition. Presumably, so the story goes,(see The Passing Tramp Blog, Nov. 5, 2017), this book is almost a complete example of plagiarism, copying almost word for word, (with changed names and places), "The Back Bay Murders" by Roger Scarlett, published in 1930. A sharp collectable copy of a decidedly uncommon title with no other copies currently in the marketplace. (Hubin, p.26).

Description
[n.p.]: [n.p.], 1809. FIRST EDITION. With 1 folding plate with 2 figures. Wrappers. This curious monograph on working stoves contains most probably one of the first descriptions of freestanding closed-top ranges with a flue. In 1780, the first kitchen stove was invented by Thomas Robinson. It had a cast iron oven on one side of a fire grate. We are unsure if this is an instruction booklet from the manufacturer, or a discourse on how to cook more nutritional meals using less fuel. The figure depicts placement of the fuel in order to cook foods evenly throughout.
