New York: V.G. Audubon. Roe Lockwood & Son, 1859. Very Good+. New York: V.G. Audubon. Roe Lockwood & Son, 411 Broadway, 1859. Third Octavo Edition. Seven volumes; large octavos (27.5cm); publisher's full blind-embossed brown morocco, gilt-lettered spines in six compartments, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers; five hundred (500) hand-colored plates lithographed by J.T. Bowen, collated complete. Leather a bit scuffed and scratched, especially along spines, some rubbing to joints, spines uniformly darkened, scattered foxing to textblocks and plates, else a Very Good set. Contemporary ownership ex libris of R.E. Carr to front pastedowns. "The legacy of Audubon's work must be judged by a dual standard - as art and as science...Where Audubon was interested in a bird he would lavish its representation a microscopic detail satisfying to the most critical scientist...His passion for representing birds in violent action had obvious advantages and defects, but it bears witness to the fact that he studied and painted birds in life, not stuffed in museum cases" (Dictionary of American Biography).

Description
1930. NA. Very Good. 53 wallpaper samples representing eleven, or arguably a dozen, different patterns, all striking, and all Modernist, and Art Deco-ish, in their sensibility. Patterns are geometric -- lines, circles, parallelograms, etc. -- or abstracted foliage and other floral elements, or vaguely suggestive of marine life. While there is no date, nor even evidence of the wallpaper company for whom these were done, we are of the conviction these date probably to the 1930s, although they could be from the twenties, or the forties. The paints on the wallpapers have an actual palpability that comes from hand-brushwork. We assume that a stencil process was used to create these samples. Within the designs, there can be differences from one to the next besides their coloring. In a leaf pattern design, for example, some of the samples have a superimposed pattern of short lines, while others have none of this --thus our question mark about the number of different designs. Each pattern is shown in multiple color combinations, per typical for wallpaper sample books. The samples are mounted on black paper, these undersheets measuring 32.5 by 26 cm, and the samples are mounted with modest margins and are close to uniform in size, but not completely so. Typical would be dimensions of about 28 by 24 cm. Over each of the samples is a spider web patterned thin and translucent vellum tissue guard, such as we associate with photo albums from the early to mid-20th century. It is our educated guess that these samples were part of the drafting process, and not meant to be presented to customers. In other words, pre-catalogue. But since we don't know the manufacturer, we can't know for sure. Since by this time the design market was international, we also can't be sure of the nationality of that company -- it could be French,German, English or American.

Description
Philadelphia: A.Hartung & Co. Wraps -- textured paper. Stapled. Very Good. White doesn't mean vanilla! the diverse world of paper whiteness here demonstrated, with 25 samples, each with a different embossed pattern or style, some mimicking other materials, some, geometric, some, indescribable. Oblong, 12.5 by 20.5 cm. 27 leaves, with two leaves serving as a key. The inside front cover has pricing info printed. The samples are arranged into two groups, the first, with a diagonal cut-away. In both groupings each succeeding sample is slightly taller so that one can at a glance see a sliver of all the samples in the group. We find the arrangement quite singular. Yale holds a catalogue from this company with color samples, so obviously a very different catalogue. Otherwise no institutional holdings of the company's publications listed on OCLC First Search. One sample has a chunky chip, but most of the sample is intact. The cover shows light to moderate use.

Description
n.p., 1968. Collection of five explicit gay-themed Stonewall-era cartoons presented as mock holiday cards and posters, all signed "Chic." "Chic o' Frisco" is listed as an author in the Online Archive of California's collection of San Francisco LGBT Business Ephemera, and is also mentioned by that name (as designer of a parade float) in the October 1970 issue of "Vector: A Voice for the Homosexual Community," the official publication of the Society for Individual Rights (SIR). Cards are reminiscent of vintage novelty kitsch-erotica for the heterosexual market, with an added subversive political edge; some drawings are self-consciously retro in style and repurpose patriotic/jingoistic iconography or ad-copy language for satirical or pornographic ends. Shares some visual sensibility with the work of Tom of Finland, whose style at the turn of the decade likewise traded on a pre-established vocabulary of masculine tropes. Rare and ephemeral. Five holiday cards and posters in original 12.5'' by 9.5'' pictorial envelope, all with original mail folds as issued. Envelope ragged along edges with some tears, otherwise very good to near fine. Four of the cartoons are 18'' by 12'' (9'' by 12'' folded); one is 9'' by 12'' (9'' by 6'' folded). The contents of this collection are as follows: 1."'Tis Tyme Ye Shude Offer'th Up Thine Thanks." Pictorial mailing envelope printed in gilt; 12.5'' by 9.5'' 2. "Kampik Stripz, or Brown Nosein' Thru 'Fairyland.'" 1968. Poster depicting six homoerotic cartoon vignettes printed in black on orange background. 18'' by 12.'' 3. Labor Day Sport: Have a Ball! or Two." Bifolium printed in black on yellow stock; pp. [2-3] feature an illustrated poem: "Septembers [sic] 'Golden' Song." Celebrating "Happy, Gay Labor Day Preversions..." 9'' by 12'.' 4. "Uncle Needs You! an All the Gang for a Bangin 4th of July." Bifolium, exterior printed in white on red background, interior printed in blue on white background. 18'' by 12.'' 5. Happyness [sic] Is a 'Dad' Called Peter!" 1969. Bifolium "Father's Day" card printed in brown and yellow. 18'' by 12.'' 6. "'Coming' of the Pilgrims..." 1968. Bifolium Thanksgiving Day card printed in blue and gilt. 18'' by 12.''.

1897. GARRISON, William Lloyd, Jr. 1 page Autograph Letter Signed and dated September 25, 1897. Addressed to Mrs. Amory. Son of the famed abolitionist, Garrison Jr. continued in his father's footsteps as both an abolition and suffrage activist. In this letter, Garrison tells his female correspondent that he "will reserve that evening [December 29th] for Wellesley. The engraving was being sold by William Edward Stephens (1850-1918), Cora's husband and owner of W. E. Stephens & Co. (eventually renamed Stephens Lithographing and Engraving Company). The flyer is divided into two sections. The first section has a black and white print of the engraving, along with the text "Every Sunday School, and Every Pastor, Superintendent and Christian Worker should have a copy." This flyer was attempting to sell a larger and more colorful version of the engraving then was sold previously. The version for sale was 32" x 47" and has been "lithographed in ten colors and three bronzes, on heavy lithograph paper". The second section of this flyer included testimonials from a several past customers praising the quality and composition of the engraving. At the bases of the flyer, in red, is the text "Special Discount of 25 per cent. [sic] to Delegates to the Eighth International Convention". It is unknown what convention the flyer is referring to. With the flyer is two envelopes, the first one originally held the flyer and is emblazoned with the word "Important!". The second envelope is slightly smaller than the first and was meant as a return envelope and has the company's address on it. Measures 12" x 9" (flyer), 6 1/2" x 3 3/4 (envelope).
