Description
Finely illustrated manuscript of Tale of Ise on smooth & thick torinoko paper with 30 full-page & one double-page paintings, employing sumi ink, various washes, sprinkled gold, & gold paint. Leaves of text underpainted in gold with delicate floral devices. Written throughout in a fine calligraphic cursive hand. 34; 35; 33 leaves. Three vols. Small 4to (234 x 171 mm.), retchoso binding, orig. gold & blue-green silk brocade over semi-stiff wrappers, gold endpapers, gold-patterned manuscript labels on upper cover. [Japan]: early to mid-Edo. A very beautifully illustrated manuscript of Tale of Ise, one of the earliest and most famous literary classics of Japan, a collection of some 125 prose tales with the addition of 209 waka poems and based on the adventures and amorous exploits of the Heian courtier-poet Ariwara Narihira 在原業平 (825-80). The “‘young man’ of the Ise Monogatari episodes apparently is the prototype of the consummate courtier-lover of the Heian period: handsome, sensitive, fashionable, and skilled in the arts, especially in composing poetry. His love-affairs are with women of varying ages and from different levels of society, so it is not surprising that these tales were a popular subject for narrative illustrations from the Heian period on.”–Miyeko Murase, Tales of Japan. Scrolls and Prints from The New York Public Library (Oxford: 1986), p. 81. Our manuscript is very finely illustrated with one double-page and 30 full-page paintings, using the black ink lines of hakubyō 白描 (literally “white drawing” or monochrome) in the Chinese style, with the addition of delicate ink washes in various grays of sumi ink; subtle shades of red, pink, and blue; and the ample use of gold mist and paint. Our manuscript reveals the blending of the hakubyō style of the Kamakura period with the coloring of the yamato-e やまと絵 (Japanese style of painting). The leaves of text were first decorated with many underpaintings of floral devices in gold before the calligrapher set to work with his brush. In very fine condition, preserved in a box within box. ❧ Earl Miner et al., The Princeton Companion to Classical Japanese Literature (1985), p. 170–“The Ise Monogatari was recognized with the Genji Monogatari by the renga masters as one of the two classics of monogatari literature central to their art…The legacy of the work is broader still in some respects — not as a cause or influence so much as a major early exemplar of much that is most characteristic in Japanese literature…It is, finally a work extraordinarily rich in half-hidden detail. The attentive folklorist, psychologist, and historian reap rewards akin to those of the poet and novelist as readers…the student of Japanese literature will find the Ise Monogatori one of the most surprisingly rich, as also richly surprising works of all classical literature.”.

Description
England, first half of 13th century. 235 x 117 mm. (9 1/4 x 4 1/2"). Single column, 49-50 lines in a gothic hand. Rubrics in dark brown ink, three two-line initials in red or blue with contrasting penwork, one four-line puzzle initial in red and blue, with red and blue penwork decorations and long marginal extenders. With a few contemporary corrections in a different hand, verso with scant remnants of mounting tape. Gwara Handlist no. 7. ◆Top edge trimmed, cutting into the large initial's ascender, one corner cut away (not affecting text), a couple of wrinkles and a bit of soiling to vellum, but in excellent condition overall, quite clean and entirely legible. Noticeably different in appearance from the Medieval leaves more commonly encountered on the market (such as Books of Hours, Bibles, liturgical books, etc.), this leaf features a tall, thin "ledger" format and offset initials spaced slightly apart from the rest of the line. The text here comes from the "Aurora," a commentary on the Bible in verse form written in the late 12th century by French poet Petrus Riga (1140-1209), a canon of Rheims cathedral. Although little is known about the author's life, Riga's text became immensely popular throughout Europe and was routinely studied in Medieval universities. In fact, it is likely that the present leaf came from a manuscript intended for a student or academic, as its dimensions suggest it was made for easy transport and could even have been slipped into a pocket. In the 20th century, the parent manuscript was owned and dismembered by biblioclast Otto Ege, and leaves appeared as specimen no. 7 in his "Fifty Original Leaves from Medieval Manuscripts, Western Europe, XII to XVI Century." Single leaves from this manuscript appear at auction very rarely. The last example we were able to track on RBH and ABPC sold at Bloomsbury in 2016 for an all-in price of £3,100..

Description
1944. Adams, Ansel. Born Free and Equal published in 1944 presents a photographic record of Japanese Americans incarcerated at the Manzanar War Relocation Center in California during World War II. Adams produced the work following visits to Manzanar in 1943 and 1944, when Japanese American families were confined under wartime relocation policies after the issuance of Executive Order 9066. The book documents daily life inside the camp and portrays individuals who had lost homes, businesses, and professions after forced removal from the West Coast. Adams framed the project as an effort to depict the civic loyalty and resilience of the incarcerated community while the war was still underway and anti Japanese sentiment remained widespread in the United States. Adams, Ansel. Born Free and Equal: The Story of Loyal Japanese-Americans. New York: U.S. Camera, 1944. First edition, first printing. Adams undertook the project after being invited by Manzanar director Ralph Merritt to photograph life at the camp. The resulting images were later exhibited publicly and published in this volume. Adams described his intent directly in the book: "The purpose of my work was to show how these people, suffering under a great injustice, and loss of property, businesses and professions, had overcome the sense of defeat and despair by building for themselves a vital community in an arid (but magnificent) environment...All in all, I think this Manzanar Collection is an important historical document." The photographs portray residents of the camp in everyday activities and community roles, including families, nurses, students, farmers, and veterans such as Nobutero Harry Sumida, identified in the text as a Spanish American War veteran. The book also includes landscape images of the Owens Valley surrounding the camp. Adams's Manzanar photographs became part of a broader effort during the war to shape public perception of the incarceration of Japanese Americans, and the publication and exhibition of the images generated significant discussion because of the subject matter. The work remains one of the earliest extended photographic documentations of life within a wartime relocation center. Softcover volume measuring approximately 11 × 8 inches. 112 pages including 65 photographic illustrations. Stapled maroon wrappers with light green lettering. Minor half inch tear at the lower front spine and light handling wear; interior pages and photographic reproductions remain clean and bright. Very good condition overall and an important contemporary photographic record of Japanese American wartime incarceration.

Description
Quarto, 4 pages, including stamp less address leaf, paper browned, some staining, two small holes from seal opening with no significant loss of text, else in good condition. 1842 Indiana politician lobbies in Washington for claims against Midwestern Tribes – and threatens violence. A merchant, farmer, and politician who had emigrated to the Midwest frontier from New York, Bearss first went to work for a firm engaged in the Indian trade until opening his own mercantile business, growing wealthy from land and business investments. He was elected as a Whig to the Indiana Legislature in 1841, serving in both legislative houses for 12 years, before, during and after the Civil War. Switching to the new Republican Party in 1856, he attended the first Republican National Convention that nominated John Fremont. This letter was written while he was visiting Washington as a lobbyist for business interests holding treaty claims against the Pottawatomi, Ottawa, Chippewa, and Miami Indians. "… It appears to me that the last six months of my life has been throwed away…had I known that I would have been detained one fourth the time when I came here I should have started back the same week I arrived here but we have been put off from one week to another…I can't tell you when I will get a way from here…I expect my Claims will be cut down probably to one half the am[oun]t allowed me by the Comm[issioner]s. And it will be so with all the claimants after the treaty. It is a discouraging business but we will make the Indians pay us the balance or kill ever(y) one of them ..."

Lincoln, Nebraska: University of Nebraska Press, 2003. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Near Fine. 4x1x10. First edition. Ink stamp on page base. 2003 Hard Cover. xii, 323 pp. A richly textured portrait of the famous Native leader Powhatan and his realm emerges in this revisionist study. For decades the English colonists at and around Jamestown lived in the shadow of a powerful confederation of Native American communities led by Powhatan. That realm encompassed the Tidewater area of Virginia from the James River to the Potomac River. For many years Powhatan skillfully staved off threats from other Native peoples and from European colonists. Despite the prominence of Powhatan during the early colonial years, our knowledge of him and life in his realm is filtered nearly completely through the eyewitness accounts of Europeans. In Powhatan Lords of Life and Death, an incisive structuralist perspective and an impressive synthesis and reinterpretation of available records by anthropologist Margaret Holmes Williamson provides a more complex and culturally appropriate view of the realm of Powhatan during the crucial early decades of the seventeenth century. Alternative conceptions of power and cosmology are set forth that force reconsideration of important components of Powhatan society, including the basis of leadership, the relationship between political leaders and religious specialists, the role of ritual, and the resonance of Powhatan cosmological beliefs with those of other southeastern Native peoples. Powhatan Lords of Life and Death revisits a pivotal figure in American history and enables us to appreciate more fully Powhatan and the fascinating world he helped to create.

Description
New York: Osprey, 2003. 4th Printing. Soft Cover. Near Fine. 7x0x9. Taylor, C. Fourth printing. Minor general wear. 2003 Soft Cover. 64 pp. At the beginning of the 20th century, the military importance of the Hawaiian Islands became clear. Oahu in particular was a key bastion in projecting America's military power in the Pacific. The island was turned into a military fortress - and yet it also became the site of one of America's greatest defensive failures, the Japanese attack of December 7, 1941. By the end of World War II, the harbor itself was the most heavily defended in the world, and the island had earned the sobriquet "Fortress Oahu". This title documents the development of the coastal, air and land defense systems that served to protect Pearl Harbor and Honolulu from 1907 to 1950, and seeks to understand why these failed at a critical point.

An exceptional copy. 2015 Mass Market Paperback. ix, 289 pp. "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is a 1969 autobiography about the early years of American writer and poet Maya Angelou. The first in a seven-volume series, it is a coming-of-age story that illustrates how strength of character and a love of literature can help overcome racism and trauma. The book begins when three-year-old Maya and her older brother are sent to Stamps, Arkansas, to live with their grandmother and ends when Maya becomes a mother at the age of 16. In the course of Caged Bird, Maya transforms from a victim of racism with an inferiority complex into a self-possessed, dignified young woman capable of responding to prejudice.

Dordrecht: Kluwer Academic Publishers, 2002. Hardcover. Very good. Hardcover. 9 1/2" X 6 1/2". xiii, 229pp. Very mild shelf wear to covers, corners, and edges of paper over boards. Pages are clean and unmarked. Binding is sound. ABOUT THIS BOOK: In Jean PaulSartre's Nausea, Roquentin feels bound to listen to the sentimental ramblings about humanism and humanity by the Self Taught Man. "Is it my fault," muses Roquentin, "in all he tells me, I recognize the lack of the genuine article? Is it my fault if, as he speaks, I see all the humanists I have known rise up? I have known so many ofthem!" And then he lists the radical humanist, the so called"left" humanist, and Communist Humanist, the Catholic humanist, all claiming a passion for their fellow men. "But there are others, a swarm of others: the humanist philosopher who bends over his brothers like a wise older brother with a sense of his responsibility; the humanist who loves men as they are, the humanist who loves men as they ought to be, the one who wants to save them with their consent, and the one who will save them in spite of themselves. . . . " Quite naturally, the skeptical Roquentin ends by saying how "they all hate each other: as individuals, not as men. " Fully aware of the misuse and false comfort in the use of the term, Professor Aloni proceeds to restore meaning to the word as well as appropriate its educational significance. There is a freshness in this book, a restoration of a lost clarity, a regaining of authentic commitment.(Publisher).
