Description
Fairchilds, KY and Evansville, [IN]: n.p., 1941. Near fine.. A classic album of Americana with clear and sharp domestic, community, occupational and railroad themed images. Compiled by the Fairchilds family of Evansville, IN between 1938 and 1941, the patriarch appears to have worked in gas and oil exploration in and around the western Kentucky / southern Indiana / southern Illinois regions. Many named images of the men Fairchilds worked alongside as well as facilities located in Keensburg, IL, Centralia, IL, Cloverport, KY, and Edgar County, IL. A wonderful series includes approximately 20 interior and exterior views of a new family home located on Plaza Dr. in Evansville, and dozens of shots show downtown Evansville, its storefronts, signage, holiday festivities, and decorations. Several railroad photos and a handful from a trip to Washington, D.C. are also included. All images carefully framed with a strong aesthetic eye. Particularly striking are the many close-up portraits throughout rendered with an intimacy not typically seen in similar albums. An uncommonly well-composed and -constructed album of middle class life in the southern midwest at the tail-end of The Depression, just before the beginning of U.S. involvement in WWII. Hardcover. Oblong folio album. Original (likely homemade) wooden covers with screw binding and brass hinges - measuring approximately 15.25" x 12". Containing 29 black paper leaves with 252 black and white, primarily snapshot photographs glue-mounted both recto and verso. Small title photograph to front cover torn, light handling wear to album exterior. A handful of images apparently perished. Otherwise about near fine throughout.

Description
[New York]: The Missionary Society of St. Paul the Apostle in the State of New York, 1947. Very good to near-fine.. A late 1940's printed pocket guide to curbing "Bad Thoughts" and sinful thinking penned by a Reverend, fed up with the rise of Freud and "pop psychology" in popularity over religion as a means of understanding the self: "Psychology is in the air! Sensational best-sellers as well as highly popular radio programs unravel, in the name of science and popular education, the hidden conflicts underlying personality disturbances, while in movie houses as in dimly lighted temples, the modern unknown god 'Unconscious' is publicly worshiped in psychiatrically [sic] tinged pictures ... Doubt is raised constantly by many leaders-- our so-called intellectuals-- concerning immorality" (p. [1]). The booklet goes on to reinforce the author's religious biases by attempting to answer questions such as "When Are Bad Thoughts Sinful?" and "Why Does God Permit Temptations?". An interesting look into a Reverend's struggle to justify his role in an increasingly modernized and secularized world. Single vol. (6" by 3.5"), pp. 32, in original illus. wrps with image of a man pondering on the front. Early price in ink manuscript to upper wrapper.
