The workes of Geffray Chaucer. newly printed with dyuers workes whiche were neuer in print before: As in the table more playnly dothe appere. London: Printed...by Thomas Godfray, 1532. Full Description: CHAUCER, Geoffrey. The workes of Geffray Chaucer newly printed, with dyuers workes whiche were neuer in print before: As in the table more playnly dothe appere. [London: Printed...by Thomas Godfray, 1532. The first collected edition of Chaucer's works, and the first attempt at historical editing of any English author. Folio in sixes (11 11/16 x 8 1/8 inches; 297 x 205 mm.). 397 leaves plus an additional leaf (Qq7) containing compartment for divisional title on recto ([22], xiii-CCxix, [4], CCxx-CCC, CCC-CCClxxxiii leaves). With fourteen leaves, including title, in facsimile (A1-A4, B1, I4, Qq4, Qq5, Qq7, and Vvv2-Vvv6). Black letter. Forty-eight lines plus headline, double columns. Several sets of decorated initials and lombards used as initials, a few capital spaces with guides. Fifteen woodcuts in the Canterbury Tales, three repeated, one three times, a total of twenty impressions. Edited by William Thynne. Handsomely bound by Rivière & Son in full brown morocco. Covers decoratively panelled in blind, spine in six compartments with five raised bands, gilt-lettered in two compartments and decoratively tooled in blind in the remaining four, board edges and turn-ins ruled in blind, all edges gilt. A few early ink annotations. Housed in a custom full brown morocco clamshell. Box with some tape repairs at edges. Overall a very good copy. The first collected edition of Chaucer deserves to rank in many ways with the 1623 First Folio edition of Shakespeare. The editor, William Thynne, was chief clerk of the kitchen in Henry VIII's household, and accrued a wide variety of lucrative preferments. His dedication to Henry VIII, actually written by Sir Brian Tuke, contains many interesting remarks on the development of language and on Thynne's efforts at forming an "author collection" of Chaucer, both manuscript and printed. The source for the Canterbury Tales was Wynkyn de Worde's 1498 edition, collated with several manuscripts. Besides authentic works, Thynne included some two dozen inauthentic poems, making this the largest compendium of Middle English poetry heretofore published. In all, twenty-one of the poems in the collection are first printings, including four authentically by Chaucer: "The Book of the Duchess," "The Complaint unto Pity," "Lack of Steadfastness, and "The Legend of Good Women." Thynne has often by criticized for publishing so many inauthentic poems in his Chaucer, but this is unhistorical; nor is it even clear that he was making an active claim of authenticity for all that was included. His edition established the vulgate text of Chaucer for well over two centuries, until Tyrwhitt's great edition of the Canterbury Tales appeared in 1775 (see Sotheby's New York, 29 October 1996, lot 346). "The woodcuts of the Knight and the Squire are here used for the first time as Chaucer illustrations (the former is a close copy of the cut used in the Pynson 1526 edition) but the rest belong to the original series of blocks cut for Caxton's second edition of the Canterbury Tales (1484)" (Pforzheimer). Description
London: R. Noble for R. Edwards, 1797. First Edition. Full Morocco. Very Good. Elephantine folio, 44 by 34 cm. viii, [2], 95, [2] pp. 43 of the pages have Blake's expansive, charismatic illustrations surrounding the text. Four of these are section heads, the balance, being border ornamentation, but even the latter are far more than merely decorative. The distinctive Blake artwork fires the imagination regardless. In fact, the text, which is framed with ruled lines, seems to cover some of the illustration. Last two pages are the Explanation of the Engravings, which are often not present. The full navy blue morocco is fairly heavily rubbed along the edges, a bit less so, by the joints. Some scattered soiling within, but the pages are generally quite clean. There are a few closed tears, not of great length, and one repaired close tear which was somewhat longer. The Explanation of Engravings leaf has two repaired tears. Notwithstanding these flaws, this is an attractive, appealing copy.

Description
Paris: Jullien, 1870. Hardcover. Blindstamped, gilt-stamped. Brass clasp. Fine. One of the most beautiful and elaborate of lotto game sets, here complete, with all thirty lotto cards, each a veritable collage of chromolithographic images -- a map, several cameo portraits, a human genre scene, landmarks and other miscellany crammed onto lotto card. Attesting to the luxuriousness of the production is the heavy faux book box containing the game -- gilt lettering and ornamentation were heavily employed on the box, and the lotto cards are bordered by gilt as well. While the gilt on the box has specks of a crusty residue of some sort and a modest amount of other soiling, we think the box and the all the components of the game are in as nice condition as one could find. The box is 36 by 30 cm, and 6 cm deep. The cards are oblong, 13 by 21 cm. Within the box the rules are on a sheet mounted to the inside front cover. On the right are four wells, the larger one, housing the cards, the two others, for three kinds of game pieces. There are also two small sacks in which game pieces are kept together. When we say the game is complete, we must qualify that we don't know how many game pieces there were originally, but certainly our set has close to all, if not all, and since it is the cards and box that will matter to virtually any collector, we are comfortable characterizing the game as complete, with this one minor hedge.

Description
The Stanford Radical Caucus, 1970. Folded sheet, staples. Very Good. Leftist student organization's long essay that analyzes and rails against income inequities, corporate capitalism home and abroad, who controls the government, etc. And of course there is an anti-war attitude underlying the cynicism about the U.S. government. The type of outlook that was sweeping campuses across the country then, especially the more elite schools, but this one is leavened with a dollop of humor with cartoons, and it is also enlivened with many other illustrations -- depending what one considers illustration as opposed to ornament, easily more than twenty, plus three sets of multi-panel cartoon strips. 32 typed pages on standard sized typing paper (11 by 8.5 inches, or 28by 12.5 cm), including front and back covers. No copies found on OCLC First Search -- not entirely surprising, given that it wasn't commercially published or printed. Cover is a folded blue sheet twice the width of the other sheets. Blue cover has columns of soiling. Some light foxing along the edges, which have minor chipping and roughening.

Description
folio, 10 pages, on unwatermarked 18th century paper, likely of American manufacture, formerly folded in quarters, docketed twice on final leaf. There are significant condition issues, paper browned and brittle, separated along folds with considerable loss at intersection of center fold, tears repaired with archival tissue. Despite the issues of condition, a unique document listing the estate inventory of a unique figure, a pioneer printer, publisher, and journalist in colonial Philadelphia. Manuscript estate inventory of Andrew Bradford, pioneer printer and journalist of Philadelphia, who died November 24, 1742. Bradford printed the first newspaper in the middle colonies and the first magazine in America. Andrew Bradford, like his father William was also a pioneer supporter of the idea of a free press and is credited with setting "forth those principles that later enabled Andrew Hamilton, in New York City, to free John Peter Zenger in the most famous case for press freedom in colonial days." The inventory lists Bradford's personal and household effects as well as the inventory of his business. Bradford not only was a printer he also, like most other printers, had attached to his office a large store. Bradford operated at "The Sign of the Bible" an early eighteenth-century general store which carried a wide range of goods and in which he did a considerable business. Bradford's store, like his paper the American Mercury, was a popular and profitable undertaking. The wealth of the colony had increased by 1742, the year of Bradford's death, and Bradford's stock includes more luxurious and expensive items, as shown in the present inventory. The inventory lists a large stock of books, including dozens of Bibles and Testaments, Prayer Books, schoolbooks and primers, including "31 Dozen Horn Books", dictionaries, literary works, bibles, of all sizes and "quality", religious books, including 17 copies of Pilgrim's Progress, medical books, including "1 doz Aristotle's Midwife," German and Welsh language books, likely the products of Bradford's press (Bradford printed the first Welsh book in America, in 1721), elegantly bound blank books, large amounts of paper, vellum and parchment, printed forms, and legal stationery, scientific instruments, dozens of pairs of spectacles, parcels of almanacs and pamphlets, many likely the product of Bradford's press, unbound books, bibles and pamphlets, likely to be bound in Bradford's own bindery, the inventory includes "41 calf and sheep skins", as well as many other items of the stationer's trade, slates, pencils, quills, etc. Bradford's furnishings are also listed, dishes, silver, gold, and silver watches, "a Chaise and Harness", textiles, and finally three slaves: "One Negro Man Named Harry", "One Negro man Named Tonsy" and an unnamed "Negro Woman". The goods were appraised at over £ 942, by Jon Danby and Richard Sewell. Andrew Bradford, printer, and journalist, as well as a bookseller, bookbinder, and slave owner - given the evidence from his estate inventory offered here. "Bradford was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, circa 1686, the son of William Bradford, a printer and journalist, and Elizabeth Sowle, whose father, Andrew Sowle, was a printer in London. After being arrested and released for printing a pamphlet by Quaker apostate George Keith, William Bradford moved his family to New York and opened a print shop. Here, Andrew Bradford was trained as a printer. Little is known about his childhood or formal education, but Bradford was probably not the "illiterate" printer Benjamin Franklin was to call him in the disparaging remarks in his Autobiography on the state of printing in Philadelphia upon his arrival in the city. Bradford was listed as a freeman and printer of New York in 1709, the same year he declined Rhode Island's offer to become the colony's printer. In 1710-1711 father and son were in partnership and published three books together; they maintained close business ties throughout their careers. In 1713 Andrew Bradford returned to Philadelphia and was hired to publish "The Acts and Laws of the Province of Pennsylvania, October 14th, 1712 to March 27th, 1713," the first printed collection of the colony's laws, and thus became the unofficial provincial printer. He was the only printer in Philadelphia until 1723 and published the acts of the assembly, Indian treaties, and Governor William Keith's letters and proclamations. Almanacs by Jacob Taylor, Titan Leed, and John Jerman bore Bradford's imprint, as did various books and pamphlets on social, political, and religious matters." Bradford, in addition to being the official printer for the Province, was also the printer for the Society of Friends'. Bradford's the American Weekly Mercury, the first newspaper in Philadelphia, commenced publication on 22 December 1719 and remained in publication for twenty-six years. The venture was initially a partnership with John Copson, a local bookseller at the time. They were assisted by William Bradford, who remained in New York, but took in advertisements for the Mercury until he started his own paper, the New York Gazette, late in 1725. The American Mercury had a wide circulation, and Bradford enjoyed the advantages of being colonial postmaster from 1728 to 1737, which allowed him to accumulate news and to send his own mail at no cost – both of which greatly increased the American Mercury's circulation. Until 1728 the American Mercury did not have any local competition, but upon hearing that Benjamin Franklin was planning to bring out a newspaper, another Philadelphia printer and one of Franklin's former employers, Samuel Keimer, began publishing the Universal Instructor in All Arts and Sciences; and the Pennsylvania Gazette. Franklin, joined later by Joseph Breintnall, sent thirty-two letters modeled on Sir Richard Steele and Joseph Addison's London essay periodical, the Spectator, to Bradford for publication in his newspaper. These essays, together called The Busy-Body, included remarks designed to attack Keimer and drive him out of the newspaper business; they were a success. Franklin took possession of the Pennsylvania Gazette in 1729 and became Bradford's chief competition. Early in his newspaper's existence, Bradford used it to criticize local government. After a pamphlet critical of the provincial government's financial condition was published, perhaps by Bradford, the American Mercury included a remark also critical of the province's "sinking credit." Brought before the council, Bradford denied printing the pamphlet and claimed that the newspaper remarks were inserted by a journeyman. Admonished against printing remarks on the colonial governments, Bradford was released, but in 1723 he published an account of James Franklin's censure and imprisonment in New England for publishing "scandalous libels" against the colonial government there. The account included remarks supportive of Franklin and generally of freedom of the press. In 1727 and 1728 Bradford again printed several pamphlets on political topics but was not censured. In 1729, however, Bradford was called before the council again. The government and council found Busy-Body essay number twenty-seven, in which Breintnall presents an argument for rotation of public office, to be offensive, appearing, as it did, just before an election. Bradford was jailed but returned to the press shortly, where he continued to publish the Busy-Body essays in the American Mercury. Bradford's quiet resistance of the council's wishes has been seen as an early principled conflict between the press and government in the colonies. Bradford also published the first magazine in America. The American Magazine, edited by John Webbe, was modeled on Edward Cave's Gentleman's Magazine, initiated in London some years earlier. Webbe approached Franklin about the venture, but objecting to Franklin's terms, brought the plan to Bradford. In an advertisement in the American Mercury announcing the venture, the editor sets out numerous objectives: to carry news of communities without a press, and t promote liberty and freedom of the press and speech, without engaging in licentious abuses. Franklin, in the meantime, decided to bring out his own General Magazine, and he and Webbe waged an editorial battle in the Gazette and American Mercury. When the magazines were issued, weeks later, Bradford and Webbe had beaten Franklin into print by three days. Both magazines failed, however, in just a few months. Bradford was married to Dorcas Boels of Freehold, New Jersey, and after her death in 1739, to Cornelia Smith in 1740. His only child by Dorcas, died in infancy or childhood. Sometimes mentioned as a foster son, William Bradford III was Bradford's nephew and was apprenticed to him in the 1730s. After Bradford's death in Philadelphia, Cornelia Bradford continued to publish the American Mercury until 1746. Bradford's reputation rests primarily upon his publication of the first newspaper in the middle colonies and the first magazine in America, as well as upon his consistent if undramatic resistance to the provincial government's desire to control the press." Description
Collection of 255 letters, 776 manuscript pp., (164 retained mailing envelopes), dated 1 April 1879 to 19 April 1918; the bulk of correspondence dates from the 1880s and 1890s; mostly handwritten, some typed; includes correspondence of Barrett family members of Hartford, Connecticut, to their son, Charles C. Barrett, as well as incoming business letters to Barrett, who worked for the Missouri Pacific Railroad as a traveling passenger agent, and later became a land developer and realtor at Edgar, Wisconsin; the archive also includes 1 diary of 1873-1874 kept by William J. Barrett; 12 small memorandum notebooks, dated 1884-1913; and over 340 pieces of related paper and manuscript ephemeral material. There are several sections, or groups of letters, within the collection. Including a section containing family letters written by Mrs. Jane Barrett to her son Charles C. Barrett, as well as letters to Charles from his sister Grace and, his brother, Cliff; there are letters written to Barrett's wife Clara B. Minshall. Then there is a section consisting of business letters written to Charles C. Barrett from various individuals, and business-related letters written to Charles from his brother Cliff. Overall, the letters and the related ephemera document the life of Charles C. Barrett in the West and Mid-West, who along with his brother speculated in city lots in Kansas City, and later in Edgar, Wisconsin. Charles, and his brother Clifford, also worked for railroads, and Charles was a traveling salesman, helping to sell early gasoline internal combustion engines for farming, mining and other industries. Charles "Charley" Crosby Barrett (1857-1922) Charles Crosby Barrett was prominently identified with the development of Edgar, Wisconsin, having gone there in 1893, after successful business experience in other sections of the country. He was born in Blooming, Grove Township, Dane County, Wisconsin, three miles from Madison, on 25 December 1857. He was the son of James W. Barrett (1817-1863) and his wife Jane Clinton May (1828-1901) who married in 1844 and went west to Wisconsin from Wethersfield, Connecticut in 1847. Besides Charles, James and his wife had three other children: Grace Barrett (1848-1895); James Barrett Jr. (1850-); and Clifford Page Barrett (1859-1948). James W. Barrett served with the 29th Regiment, Wisconsin Infantry during the Civil War and died of typhoid fever at Vermillionville, Louisiana, in November 1863. After the death of her husband, James Warner Barrett, Mrs. Barrett moved her family back to Connecticut. This archive includes letters written by siblings Grace, Charles and Clifford P. Barrett, as well as their mother Mrs. Jane Clinton May Barrett. Charles C. Barrett was educated in Wethersfield and Bridgeport, Connecticut. He then became a commercial traveler for a wholesale boot and shoe house of Hartford, Connecticut, and continued in that line for ten years when he moved to Kansas City, Missouri and became connected with the Missouri Pacific Railroad as ticket agent and traveling passenger agent, remaining eight years, and for the three following years was manager of the Ada Mining Company stationed at Joplin, Missouri. He then became interested in the mining business, which occupied his attention until November of 1893, when he went to Edgar, Marathon County, Wisconsin. In Edgar Barrett first engaged in logging, but soon embarked in the real estate business, his holdings covered a wide territory. He served three years as Edgar's postmaster and erected the first special post office building erected in Marathon County. He then organized the Edgar Land Company, which laid out forty acres in town lots, the north side of the village, and in three and a half days had a half mile of street with sidewalks graded. He also laid out forty acres about one-half mile distant from the old town of Rib Falls, in connection with the Rib Falls Land Company. He helped organize the Edgar, Cassel & Emmett Telephone Company, he became president of the Edgar Local Telephone Company and operated the first telephone exchange in Marathon County outside of Wausau. Barrett was a Republican and for eighteen years served as Justice of the Peace and was the first police judge elected at Edgar after the incorporation of the village. The collection includes a number of business letters written to Barrett from the 1880s to the mid-1890s. In 1903 Mr. Barrett was married to Mrs. Clara Bertha (Blumer) Minshall (1869-1942), the divorced daughter of Swiss immigrant miller/farmer, Mathias Blumer (1832–1898) and his wife Anna Weiker (1833–1907) who was born Luxemburg. The couple settled in LaCrosse Co., Wisconsin. Clara had at least six siblings: Elizabeth Blumer Simonton (1857-1914); Margaret Blumer (1859-1936); John Blumer (1860-1952); Katherine Blumer Mayor (1862-1943); Bertha Blumer Markle (1866-1930); and Christian Blumer who died as an infant in 1870. Mathias Blumer had a flour mill on Mormon Creek in the southern part of LaCrosse County. The 1900 Census states that Clara was divorced from her first husband. She had previously been married to Dr. Albert P. Minshall (1862-1932). The couple married in 1892 and had one child, Cyrus Bertrand Minshall (1894-1988). They were divorced by 1900. Their son Cyrus was a veteran of WWI. There are several letters in this collection written to Cyrus and a number of letters written to Clara. Charles and Clara had three children: Clifford Charles Barrett (1909-1976); Jane Clinton May Barrett (1909-1999); and Charles J. Barrett (1910-1961). The family was Presbyterian in faith. Charles Crosby Barrett died at his home on January 14, 1922. He is buried in Pine Grove Cemetery in Wausau, Wisconsin. Clara Barrett outlived her husband by twenty years, and died in 1942 she was buried with Charles. Collection Inventory: 48 letters, 242 pp., written by Mrs. Jane May Barrett to her son Charles C. Gillis St is to be graded in the spring the bill has passed the council the party who owns all the new houses by the school house is having it graded and is going to build houses on Gillis St and a brick block corner Gillis & 5th. The grading will probably cost $2 per front foot. We will then have a street, shall dam the lower part of the hold and catch what comes off from the street. That part of the town is coming up… One more Hartford fellow arrived last week, a fellow named Geo Norton, who has been traveling for W.C. Hunt & Co. He is looing round here and says he is going to stay. All well here, give my love to Ma, have not heard from her since she left K City, except our Christmas presents. When are you going to settle the old account? Yrs, CPB" "Wabash, St. Louis and Pacific Railway Kansas City, Mo. Aug 20th, 188[5] Dear Chas., Arrived here Wednesday morning in good shape. Everything was satisfactory they did not expect me for a week more but I am satisfied to get back to work. Went out to the lot there are 4 wood houses and two brick buildings going up opposite the school house and the big bluff towards Bob Johnston is being graded level with the street so we do not look as far down as we did. Everybody is expecting a big trade this fall they are counting on 35,000,000 bushels of wheat and 200,000,000 bushels of corn in Kansas and everything is favorable to their getting it. The Goodyear Rubber Co have a fine store here they are also agents for New York Belting Co. Will find out more about them and let you know. Have been so busy since I got back that have not had any time to see about buildings. I understand that there is no rubber store in St. Joseph, Mo. about 40,000 inhabitants but still it is not as good a point as Kansas City and none west of here nearer than Denver… Chas. you better make that settlement before it gets mixed worse. Will pay the note and make a new deed this week. Have a squatter on the lot. She pays $1.00 per month have $2 so far this will pay the taxes. Shall try and get some more cabins on it. Yours, Cliff" "Hotel San Carlos Mexico 26 de March de 1889 Dear Mother, After a long and unprofitable wait for Gen'l Harrison to remember and reward the terrible efforts made by brother Chas. to help him take his seat comfortably in Washington by appointing one or both of us, and you also as minister and family to Mexico (salary $12,000 per year), like all office seekers, have become sick of politics and politicians and more especially of living on climate and high altitude and have decided to put on the garb of a working man (this is only a figure of speech for I am the possessor of only one suit) and sign my name in full on the pay roll of the Mexican Central Ry above the name of R.C. Russell General Material Agent who according to the printed note at the bottom of the roll will certify in due time that I have diligently performed the duties of my office. This great change came over me at 8 A.M. yesterday morning. Saturday, I heard there was a vacancy. Saw Mr. R, he said come to work Monday. Your son said if I don't suit or fill the bill, I am ready to take a walk at any time. If I suit, I want something better. Mr. R. said you shall have something better. This was the conversation in full, short and sweet and as the pay car only starts out once a month shall remain that long anyway, but our health is good here. We of course enjoy the change, will see some more of the world, make a living, learn Spanish and of course have better opportunities where there are not so many men to pick from as in the States. Should we do well here you must come down and make us a visit as it will I know please you more than anything or anywhere you have seen or been. All winter and summer if you feel cool, cross the street and warm, up in the sun, if you feel warm put up a parasol or get int eh shade there are many degrees difference. Summer and winter are very little different here, except that summer has a drawback (Not het) it rains for several months in the afternoons but no extreme heat no perspiration, sun stroke, mad dogs, or your old complaint of too much ice water… Saturday Col. Fisher formerly with the Missouri Pacific road as live stock agent and now general agent of the International and Great Northern at Laredo, Texas, was in the city. We went out to Chapultepec, he had been there before with General Scott in 1847, or 1848. With love to all, Yours Cliff" "Weber Gasoline Engine Co. Kansas City December 10th, 1892 C.C. Weber" "Harmony Foundry, Manufacturers of Blake's Improved Crusher, … Mining and Lead Furnace Castings Joplin, Mo. Jan 31st 1893 Mess. Weber Gas & Gasoline Engine Co., Kansas City, Mo. Gentlemen: I am contemplating changing my power in my foundry & machine shop. I am using 20 H boiler & 15 H Engine. I believe 10 Horse would run it and I am friendly towards gasoline engines, and want information for my own use & to sell by in case I put your engine in my works. I have not had an opportunity to see your engine that you have here. My Respects, W.S. Harmany" "Weber Gas and Gasoline Engine Co. Kansas City, Mo. Feb 28th, 1893 Mr. C.C. Barrett, Joplin, Mo. Dear Sir:- Enclosed we hand you letter received from Messrs. Rauch & Kennedy. It may be possible that you and these parties can work together to a pretty good advantage in making sales in his town. We refer the matter to you for your consideration. Isn't it time we were getting a settlement for the Frye & Weldon engine? If you think it desirable, I will run down and see you and we will settle this matter up. If you have any transportation it will be acceptable, as I understand you carry it around loose in your pockets. Just 'loose' a little bit of it up this way. Yours very truly, Weber Gas & Gasoline Engine Co. R.G. Weber, Secy" "Rauch & Kennedy Boiler Makers and Dealers in Miners' Supplies Galena, Kansas Feb [24] 1893 Weber Gasoline Engine Co., KC, Mo. Gents. What show will you give us to handle your engines here in Galena which is one of the best fields in the South West. There is now more H.P. in use in & near Galena than any other camps in the South West. We have a nice sales room business & make a specialty of all kinds of machinery used in the mines. We also have the advantage over all in location &c. Can furnish good references as to standing & ability. Respectfully yours, Rauch & Kennedy" "Weber Gas and Gasoline Engine Co. Kansas City, Mo. March 25th, 1893 C.C. Barrett, Joplin, Mo. Dear Sir:- Your favor of the 22nd is received enclosing testimonial letter, for which please accept thanks. The letter is a good one and will do lots of good. We have been giving the matter of leasing a number of Weber Gasoline Engines in the mining districts quite a little consideration and have come to the conclusion that this is the proper thing to do, and it is so proposed to organize a company to furnish the funds necessary to build, say 50 or 75 engines. The company so organized to put in ½ of price of the engines, we taking the other ½ for payment of engines in stock in the new company, which would beyond a doubt show our faith in the enterprise. We enclose you herewith a statement showing the results obtained from leasing 50 engines, which shows that such a company would declare a 25% dividend and still have a surplus of $1560. We intend to push this thing through at once, and already have some money subscribed. We suggest that you lay the matter before some of the monied men of Joplin, and see whether or not they will want some stock. The stock will be sold at par value and will be paid 20% when issued or say 20% every 60 days thereafter, or as fast as the money may be needed to build the engines. It may be that there are some men in Joplin who might want some stock, and we think it quite proper that they should be given a chance at it. You will remember that while I was in town, there were several parties who talked very favorable of the scheme, but then it does not pay to put too much faith in these people, as there are a great many men, you are no doubt aware, who talk a great deal and very favorable, but when it comes to putting up the stuff, they are not there. We can place all of this stock in K.C., but as above stated, we think it proper that a small interest should be held in Joplin, as Joplin will be the headquarters of the new Company. Kindly let us hear from you by return mail, whether or not there are any errors in the statement that suggest themselves to you. Awaiting your early reply in the matter, we beg to remain, yours truly, Weber Gas & Gasoline Engine Co., R.G. Weber" A Statement: Showing the results obtained from leasing a number of Weber Gasoline Engines in the Zinc and Lead Mining Districts of Southwest Missouri and Southeast Kansas. 50 Weber Gasoline Engines costing $1000 each - $50000.00 Freight on 10 cars at $30 per car - $300.00 Salary of Engineer - $900.00 Salary of Clerk - $900.00 Rent of Office and Telephone - $340.00 Incidental Expenses - $500.00 Total Outlay $52940.00 Income First Year: Revenue from setting 50 engines at $10 each - $500.00 Profit on 150000 gallons of gasoline at 1 cent per gallon- - $1500.00 Lease money from 50 engines at $30 a month - $15000.00 Total Yearly Income - $17000.00 Less Expense - $ 2940.00 Less 25% annual dividend declared on $50000 $12500.00 Surplus - $ 1560.00" "Kansas City, Mo. 5/10/93 Mr. C.C. Barrett Joplin, Mo. Friend Charles, I want to see you soon as possible. I cannot keep your Gasoline Eng. any longer as it has been a loss to me now of about seven hundred to a thousand dollars and I will not put up with it any longer and want you to advise disposition of same. The house you represent don't seem to care whether this Eng. is a success or not. Hoping to see you soon, Yours truly, M. P. Welton" "The Missouri Pacific Railway Company Kansas City, Mo. Aug 1st 1894 C.C. Barrett, Charly, I see you live up next to my old friend and the next governor of Wisconsin, Major Upham, of Marshfield Wood County, Wisconsin. We were town boys and on the board at Annapolis Med when Arthur was President. Introduce yourself to him, the first time you see the Major. Geo. Stevens is here, just come up from City of Mexico. Says Cliff and wife never looked better. Poor P.H. Jackley is very popular now. Shot and killed a barkeeper named Wolf at the Cape of Good Hope Saloon, 15th & Grand Ave, last Sunday night about midnight, had a 'gog on'! The jail is crowded with his friends daily. We are going to try and pull him through so he will not hang! Send him down to Jefferson City 10 or 15 years. Hearing tomorrow. Have Warner and Gibson to defend him. Poor ticket business. Very light. We had a great trip to Mexico in April. There was 18 of the agents with their wives from here. Had the Special Pullman Crystal. As to the loan due July 31 of $300 – and interest. I want you to sell a cord of lumber or two, and send me $330 with out fail, and I will release and send you the papers. Must have this as I am like the balance! Special taxes has broke me! Have carried this loan as long as I can and you must take it up or reloan the money of some one else. Let me hear from you. Jack Hannon of Hannon & Dixon had a gog on last Friday and fell down an [arch]way in the New York Life and killed himself, buried last Monday. My sons scattered, Scovell at Sitka, Alaska; Charley at Lincoln, Nebraska; and Harry at Las Vegas, New Mexico…. Yours truly, E.S. Jewett"

Description
New York: published by Haasis & Lubrecht, 44 Vesey St, 1881. Lithographed poster, with hand coloring, 34 1/2 x 27 inches, featuring portraits of James Garfield and Abraham Lincoln, each flanked by scenes of their assassinations on the left and scenes of the two Presidents on their death beds to the right, with caption titles for each. Printmakers Haasis & Lubrecht specialized in "incident-rich" tributes (McNeely & Holzer "The Union Image," UNC Press, 2000). They produced maps and pictorial images of Civil War generals and political leaders from the second half of the 19th century. OCLC lists two variants of this poster: Harvard, slightly larger, published by Charles Lubrecht only; and Indiana, with Garfield's portrait and the two scenes flanking Lincoln differing from the ones in this copy. Good copy of a rare poster featuring the two Presidents assassinated in the 19th century. The poster has been professionally deacidified, with small losses and tears (some restoration), lined with Japanese paper. (9833).

Description
New York: G.&C. Carvill, 1829. Book. 12mo, orig. printed boards. Pp. xv, [16]-142. Spine split vertically, chipped at extremities, front cover mostly detached, rear threads secure; moderately browned and foxed. Second edition; first published in 1827. Loubat was a New York merchant, born in the south of France. He established a vineyard of 35 acres on what is now the Brooklyn waterfront, planted with his own imported French vinifera, vines that would ultimately succumb to American blackrot and mildew. But he enjoyed enough success to impress Nicholas Longworth, whose first Ohio vineyards were planted with vines supplied by Loubat. His book, with facing French and English text begins with a dedication "To the Shade of Franklin." It is based entirely on French practice, and covers all aspects of planting, cultivation, pruning and propagation and carries through briefly to wine making, casking and bottling. Loubat's work is the third treatise on the subject published in America, following close on those of Adlum and Dufour. A scarce work, this second edition particularly so. The printed boards, always desirable, are here particularly important, with the rear board taken up with Loubat's "Proposals for the Introduction of the Grape Vine into the United States, at a moderate expense," describing his vineyards, mentioning that he is the sole agent of the Royal Nursery at Luxembourg, Paris; that his father is a nurseryman and grape grower in France; giving prices of large quantities of vines, and listing 10 agents for them in as many cities, from Boston to New Orleans. Rinck 1505; Amerine and Borg 2146; Imprints 39324..

Description
1940. 442nd Regimental Combat Team press photograph archive documenting Japanese American military service during World War II, when thousands of Nisei soldiers fought for the United States while many of their families were confined under Executive Order 9066. Activated in 1943, the 442nd was composed largely of second-generation Japanese American volunteers from Hawaiʻi and the mainland and fought in Italy, southern France, and Germany, including major action in the Vosges Mountains and the rescue of the "Lost Battalion" of the 36th Infantry Division in October 1944. This archive records the public and military representation of the unit through press-distributed images of soldiers, artillery, formal recognition, and battlefield death. Photo archive of 4 Large Silver Gelatin press photographs, each 8" x 10", United States and overseas military contexts, 1940s. A field artillery crew operates a large gun from a sandbagged position beneath palm trees, with soldiers gathered around the breech and ammunition boxes placed nearby. A military funeral scene records last rites for an infantryman of the 442nd, with helmeted soldiers standing in formation before an open grave and a caption identifying the dead soldier as a member of the Japanese American combat team. A formal indoor press scene shows two uniformed Nisei sergeants identified as Aubrey Funai and Bill Doy receiving a letter of gratitude from Governor Thye of Minnesota. Additional verso captions, agency stamps, and editorial markings indicate newspaper or wire-service circulation, including references to the 442nd Combat Team and Japanese American servicemen. The 442nd's service became one of the most consequential public counters to wartime anti-Japanese racism in the United States, because its members fought in Europe while federal policy still treated Japanese ancestry as grounds for exclusion, removal, and confinement. These press photographs preserve how that service was presented to American audiences: not as private family snapshots, but as news material showing Nisei soldiers in combat support, official recognition, and military mourning. Light toning, handling wear, editorial marks, adhesive residue, and caption labels or stamps present on versos; images remain clear and well preserved. Overall in good condition.

Description
Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malta, Aden, 1953. Hardcover. Very Good. Large oblong octavo. String-tied red leather-grained cloth over boards. 84 gelatin silver snapshot images (and one commercial image) mounted from one to six to a page, rectos only, mostly captioned. Each page with glassine tissue guard. Images range mostly between 2" x 2.5" and 3" x 4.5". The photos are mostly fine, modest wear to the binding, but sound and very good. The captioned images indicate a sea voyage that commences on *H.M.S. Dilward* in March, 1953, through the Suez Canal. Arriving in Korea at "Area 3," about 22 images follow showing British soldiers in camp, with the dining tent, preparing tea, the parade ground, a batman at work, three of weapons cleaning by both British or Korean Troops, a couple of group portraits of 1st Platoon, A Company (laid in is a sheet of paper where someone has made a contemporary list of the names of the soldiers in the Platoon), along with shirtless and identified images of a few soldiers, the Korean Cook, a Korean named "Scochie," referred to as "A Katcom," and the R.M. Band as they leave Kure on *H.M.T. Asturias* in August, 1953 (shortly after the ceasefire on July 27th). The journey continues to Hong Kong (with a partially obscured image of a "Drunken Ex-POW" being restrained on a gangplank; the next stop is Singapore with images of the city (and four of the Raffles Hotel); the rest are uncaptioned and seem to indicate a journey back to the Middle East with shipboard images, beach scenes, and three of a boxing match. A pleasing albeit brief representation of the British experience in the last few months of the Korean Conflict, and in our experience not often seen.

Description
[Cheshire, CT], 1928. Camp scrapbook and photo album from a Connecticut girl's summers, 1926-1930, at Camp Pinnacle: founded in Voorheesville, NY in 1898 as the "Young Women's Bible Training Movement," and advertised as the first girls-only summer camp. (The camp is still in operation, and its website history records that "God allowed men to come to Camp Pinnacle in 1950," for undisclosed reasons.) Early pages are filled with song lyrics and camper-composed friendship poems, lists of tent-mates, signatures, and Bible verses. A long list of athletic feats notes "Played Center - made 2 goals 1928" and "Wheelbarrow race. Esther wins!" The album's camp photos are captioned in detail, with detailed notes as well as names: "Picture taken in July of the U.S. Army Zeppelin flying over the Bungalow." Also included are a series of photos from throughout the '20s, showing Armstrong's family and other vacation outings: a Piedmont skiing trip; a moose in Vancouver; an affecting series of animal portraits including a dog (Trixie), two cats (Fluffy and "Pinky, my favorite"), two calves, a lamb on a leash (Sappho), and three horses pensively captioned "Friends?" They are certainly friends. Laid in are a number of letters, postcards, drawings, loose photographs, and drafts of poems, both copied and original, with some notes on submission information for various periodicals and a list of apparent poem titles with the note "Sent mss. to [poet and anthologist] Oscar Williams." Of these materials, a few bear dates from the 1950s or later, and include instructions for a homemade hectograph and a somewhat unkind caricature of Edith Sitwell. A striking collection of memorabilia capturing a young woman's formative years. Oblong 8vo. Green album, with covers detatched and leaves loose. Photos mounted recto and verso, with approximately 30 handwritten notes, loose photos, and other ephemera laid in.

Description
S. l. : s. n., 1900. Very good. Silver gelatine photograph, n. d. (ca 1900 - a small, penciled-in manuscript note on verso "1900 - 1910"); mounted on a card stock mat; photo 5 x 7, mat 10 x 12; image with minor age-toning and wear - in very good to near fine condition; mat with small chips to corners - in good to very good condition. A bit of a mystery, the photograph presumably depicted a crew at a lumber yard, or part of a rail yard, where material for train cars was manufactured. The two visible rails, mounted on concrete piers, were most probably previously-scrapped tracks - repurposed to be used for stacking lumber. Although, most of the men looked to be middle-aged and even older, the first and the thrid ones from the bottom right appeared to be boys, no older than 10.

Description
London: Macmillan and Co., 1895. Octavo. A sensuously romantic but chaste gift binding in full vellum with the initials " J. J. de W." in gilt on the front cover and " 25. June 1895 d. d. G. B. R." on the back cover. 184 pages. The gilt titled spine has an ornament of a single gilt inverted lily blossom on a sinuous stem with the date, 1895 in gilt at the foot of the spine. Small gilt lily blossoms also adorn the corners of both covers. Vellum turn-ins with double gilt rules. Top edge gilt. Although this binding is unsigned, it was obviously the work of a skilled binder producing a gift volume to represent the affection of the presenter and hopefully the cherished regard of the receiver.

Description
Hilton, New York: Robert John Wood. Large Hardcover. Near Fine/No Jacket. 3 in OCLC. No jacket. A few minor surface tears on front board. The portrait of Red Jacket, reduced to a line drawing, was painted in 1828 in Washington, D.C. by Charles Bird King, who was particularly famous for his Indian portraits. Red Jacket, original name Otetiani, also called Sagoyewatha, (born 1758', Canoga, New York [U.S.]—died January 20, 1830, Seneca Village, Buffalo, New York, U.S.), Seneca chief whose magnificent oratory masked his schemes to maintain his position despite double-dealing against his people’s interests. His first Indian name was Otetiani, and he assumed the name Sagoyewatha upon becoming a chief. 'Red Jacket' was his English name, a result of the succession of red coats he wore while on the British side during the American Revolution. Red Jacket retreated at the approach of General John Sullivan's American troops in 1779, and he even attempted to conclude a separate peace with the Americans. For these actions, Red Jacket was considered a coward by many of his own people. But he put his splendid oratorical skills to protesting the inevitable peacemaking with the United States at an Indian council in 1786, and his oratory succeeded in sustaining him as a Seneca chief. Red Jacket constantly sought to portray himself as a bitter enemy of the whites. Yet, while he publicly opposed land sales in 1787, 1788, and 1790, he secretly signed the property cessions to protect his prestige with the Americans. Later, however, he seems to have become more sincere in protesting white influence on Seneca customs, religion, and language. He vehemently opposed missionaries' living on Indian lands, and he vainly attempted to preserve Indian jurisdiction over criminal acts committed on Indian property. During the 1820s Red Jacket lost prestige as his drinking and general dissipation became evident. In 1827 he was deposed as chief by a council of tribal leaders—only to be reinstated following a personal effort at reform and the intercession of the U.S. Office of Indian Affairs.

Description
New York: Houghton Mifflin and Company, 2007. Reprint. Hard Cover. Fine/Fine. 5x0x8. Lee, Alan. 2024 27th printing. Corners lightly bruised, otherwise an excellent copy. Binding tight and square, pages clean, bright, and unmarked. 2007 Hard Cover. 313 pp. Color plates by Alan Lee. The Children of Hurin, begun in 1918, was one of three 'Great Tales' J.R.R. Tolkien worked on throughout his life, though he never realized his ambition to see it published. Though familiar to many fans from extracts and references within other Tolkien books, it has long been assumed that the story would forever remain an unfinished tale. Now reconstructed by Christopher Tolkien, painstakingly editing together the complete work from his father's many drafts, this book is the culmination of a tireless thirty-year endeavor by him to bring J.R.R.Tolkien's vast body of unpublished work to a wide audience.

Description
New York: Oxford University Press, 2005. 7th Printing. Mass Market Paperback. Very Good. 6x4x0. Seventh printing. Small stain on half-title page. 2005 Mass Market Paperback. 131 pp. The recent discovery of the diminutive Homo floresiensis (nicknamed "the Hobbit") in Indonesia has sparked new interest in the study of human evolution. In this Very Short Introduction, renowned evolutionary scholar Bernard Wood traces the history of paleoanthropology from its beginnings in the eighteenth century to today's latest fossil finds. Along the way we are introduced to the lively cast of characters, past and present, involved in evolutionary research. Although concentrating on the fossil evidence for human evolution, the book also covers the latest genetic evidence about regional variations in the modern human genome that relate to our evolutionary history. Wood draws on over thirty years of experience to provide an insiders view of the field, and demonstrates that our understanding of human evolution is critically dependent on advances in related sciences such as paleoclimatology, geochronology, systematics, genetics, and developmental biology. This is an ideal introduction for anyone interested in the origins and development of humankind.
