Description
Oxford: Clarendon Press, by W. Dawson, T. Bensley, and J. Cooke, printers to the University, 1796. 1 vols. 12mo. Red morocco, stamped in gilt on covers and spine. Marbled endpapers with gilt-stamped morocco bookplate. Corners bumped. All edges gilt with double fore-edge painting of Lichfield and Chichester Cathedrals. Marbled endpapers. Bound-in ribbon marker. In buckram slipcase. 1 vols. 12mo. A late 18th-century version containing no royal preamble from George III, but only two brief pages at the rear - dated 1698 and 1696, respectively - attesting to then-king William II's approval of the New Version of the Psalms of David by Nicholas Brady and Nathan Tate, also included here. Of special interest is the double fore-edge painting of both Lichfield and Chichester Cathedrals, two of the nine British medievel churches originally constructed as Roman Catholic cathedrals but later converted to Church of England worship during the reign of Henry VIII. Each have historically been governed by a secular chapter presided over by a dean, as opposed to a monastic bishop. The provenance of this copy, noted below, appears to indicate that at some point soon after publication it traveled to the nascent United States, where the Lambs were prominent Boston shipping merchants in the late 1770s-early 1800s. The Reverend Alfred Niese - who was educated at the General Theological Seminary - was a rector in both New Jersey and Maine, and his fellow pastor and GST graduate, Ledlie Laughlin, served first in New Jersey, and was then instrumental in the reconstruction of St. Luke-in-the-Fields in Greenwich Village, which burned in 1981 during his progressive rectorship. Provenance: Mr. J. A. Lamb (ownership signatures on preliminary and rear leafs); Harriet Robinson (bookplate, 1799); gift of the Rev. Alfred M. Niese to the General Theological Seminary in thanksgiving for the ministry of Ledlie I. Laughlin, Jr. (20th century). Not in Griffiths, D.N. Book of Common Prayer

Description
Chicago: O.C. Blackmer, 1876. About very good.. 48pp. plus interleaved blanks with seven manuscript illustrations. Original half leather and cloth, edges red. Spine chipped, lower portion separating, corners lightly worn, boards slightly bowed.Minor internal soiling. A charming family press production, otherwise unrecorded. The work was published by Orlando C. Blackmer, with the contents composed by his sons, Percy (text) and Ernest (illustrations). It is dedicated to family members Florence and Norma Thompson, and the final page celebrates "the daughters of America... blessed with equal privileges with her sons in the means of common education." The start of each "story" has a hand-colored initial, while "the end" is illustrated with the shadow outline of a woman weeping. Stories include "Old Blue Beard"; "The Gold Leg"; "The Courageous Lad"; and "The Boy Who Couldn't Tell a Story", among others. A wonderful example of domestic book arts production in post-Fire Chicago.

Description
Bogota: Imprenta del Neo-granadino, 1855. Still very good.. 17pp. Original printed wrappers, stitched as issued. Mild dust soiling and dampstaining to wraps. Light biopredation at upper left corner and pin-sized wormhole at right margin, neither affecting text. Occasional faint foxing and minor soiling internally. A rare pamphlet that prints a plea for clemency by Pedro Neira Acevedo, a Colombian politician who was imprisoned for his role in the Golpe de Melo in 1854. In addition to his request for freedom, the pamphlet comprises a rumination on the current form of the government in Colombia and pleas for a return to non-military, non-dictatorial government. According to a footnote on the final page, Neira was freed and then reimprisoned between the writing and publication of this text. OCLC locates only one copy, at the National Library of Chile.

Description
Springfield, Mas.: M. Brewer - Printer, 1805. 16pp, disbound with light to moderate foxing. Good+. "Lyon, a young man traveling home, was beaten to death by highway robbers and his body weighted down with a large stone in the Chicopee River" [McDade 258]. Two men, Irish immigrants Daley and Halligan, were arrested. The evidence of guilt was underwhelming. Their convictions may well have been based on ethnic prejudices. Their appointed counsel, Francis Blake, who offered no witnesses on their behalf, had urged the jury not to give in to prevailing ethnic prejudice. In 1984 Governor Dukakis officially proclaimed Daley and Halligan innocent, and victims of anti-Irish bias. Reverend Witter's Discourse reflects this contemporary animus. Describing in detail the murder of young Lyon "by two ruffian footpads," he blames "the policy of permitting so many idle vagrants to traverse the country ... We see the evil attending a continual influx of vicious and polluted foreigners into this country. Many of the outrages we suffer, proceed from this source. - Who break open our houses, in the unsuspecting hours of sleep? -- Who set fire to our large cities and towns for the sake of plunder? and Who rob and commit murder on our highways? ... A great portion of the crimes abovementioned, together with many others which might be named, are committed by foreigners. And that atrocious deed which has, so recently, congealed all our blood with horror, in this place, is supposed to have been perpetrated by foreigners. And by whom are our state-prisons crowded with inhabitants? Look at the annual reports of the overseers of these prisons, and you will find them to be occupied, principally, by foreigners." London: Richard Bentley, 1851. FIRST EDITION. Each volume with half-title, frontispiece portrait in Volume I, 6 plates (3 colored lithograph, 1 double folding), text illustration, 2 folding plans, and a facsimile letter from Vans Agnew to General Van Cortlandt. Contemporary full calf, rebacked, with the gilt logo of the Society of Writers to the Signet on all covers, small stain to lower corner of front board of Volume II; interiors excellent. First edition of Edwardes account of the Punjab Rebellion of 1848, also known as the second Anglo-Sikh War. Edwardes was appointed to the personal staff of Sir Hugh Gough, the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian army, whom he served during the first Anglo-Sikh War (1846-47). Thereafter the Punjab was ruled by a British Resident. With the stirrings of a second rebellion, Edwardes, despite any military training, raised a body of soldiers and defeated rebels loyal to a local Sikh leader. After numerous battles throughout the area, the local governor surrendered following negotiations with Edwardes. As a result of his deeds, he became quite famous and celebrated back in England. Edwardes (1819-1868) returned to the Punjab on a number of occasions, acting as a political appointee posed with the task of maintaining order in the area. For his role in securing the British victory during the War, he is known as the “Hero of Multan.”.

Danville, 1915. First Edition. 13 ¼ x 8 ¾ inches. Mounted to cardstock with residue and affixed articles to cardstock verso. Date stamp of “Oct 24 1915” on lower margin. Peculiar ink inscription reads “Culprints Doc, Wedge and Shorty” at margin. Very Good. An early Chinese American restaurant menu from Danville, Illinois. The business is listed in the 1913 International Chinese Business Directory of the World, making the restaurant one of fewer than would exist when immigration laws changed in 1915 allowing restaurateurs to enter the United States on work visas. The menu features two sections, “American Style” and “Chinese Style,” with the latter section including dishes such as Chop Suey, Chicken Sum Soo, Noodles Wor, Canton Style Eggs, Fried Rice and a selection of teas. The existence of a separate American menu attests to the development of American Chinese food alongside American food, and the degree to which restaurants offered Chinese immigrants an opportunity to operate businesses for broader American clientele. We find records of the Mandarin Cafe’s existence into the 1940s.

New York: Organizatsiia Oborony Chotyrokh Svobid Ukrainy, 1957. Very good. Uniform edition (first published in 1921 in Vienna); 8 3/4 x 5 3/4; pp. [4], 5-210, [2]; burgundy leatherette over boards, with title embossed in gilt; minor rubbing to tips of spine and corners; very light wear to boards; very good or better condition. Dmytro Dontsov (1883 - 1973) was a Ukrainian author, journalist, and a radical political thinker with great influence over the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists. Born in a Cossack officer's family, Dontsov joined the Ukrainian Social-Democratic Labor Party in 1905, was arrested shortly after for being an instigator in "Socialist politics," and was forced to move to Vienna in 1909. After the Revolution, he returned home and was appointed Head of Pavlo Skoropadsky's Government's official news agency. By 1922 Dmytro had rejected the Socialist ideas of his youth and had increasingly become immersed in radical Nationalism. In 1939, right before the takeover of Western Ukraine by the Soviets Dontsov fled his country for Bucharest, then Prague, Germany, Paris, and the United States until he finally settled in Toronto where he taught Ukrainian literature at Universite de Montreal. In his current work, among other things, Dontsov floated the idea of leaving Galicia to Poland, not because he particularly cared for the Poles, but because he was convinced that surrendering the land to Poland would strengthen its union with Ukraine against their mutual enemy, ie. Russia. He would eventually abandon the thought and would consider Poland an outpost of the Soviet Union.

Wiesbaden: Breitkopf & Härtel [PN 28147; Edition Breitkopf Nr. 5312], 1980. Quarto. Original publisher's light green printed wrappers. [4], 117 pp. Ex libris the pianist Mario Feninger (1923-2016), with his signature to blank upper margin of title. Sightly worn and browned; titling in manuscript to spine. Reissue of the first edition. Kindermann K. 270, p. 315. Arlecchino, in one act to Busoni's own libretto, premiered in Zürich at the Stadttheater on 11 May 1917. "Stylistically the score bridges the gap between Busoni's experimental pre-war compositions and the later works written in the spirit of 'Junge Klassizität'. ... The element of operatic parody in the score gives rise to all manner of quotations and allusions, from Gluck to Wagner, and bel canto to ragtime. These are unified through harmonic cunning and brilliant use of a modestly sized orchestra.
