Very good.
Description
1928. Very good.. A set of five elaborate annual birthday presentations to Florence Gunn (1857-1928) for each of her final five birthdays, written by her children and other family members as a lengthy biographical retrospective in humorous verse, illustrated with lively and skillful pen-and-pencil drawings. Gunn was born in the heart of the Victorian age and lived through the First World War and to the end of the '20s. Both an arresting portrait of a strong-minded woman ("The war was not all sadness, for she did so love a raid / And when the bombs were dropping fast, she never was afraid") and an invaluable document of cultural change and women's social history through the close of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. Gunn's children affectionately but unsparingly record both her relentless personality ("For conversation she'd no use / Her best retort was just abuse") and her early struggles with domestic economy as a naval surgeon's wife. Between dramatic episodes, she learns to flirt, ride a bicycle, fire a gun, drive a car, and tolerate the gramophone. The five-volume history encompasses seven decades of youth, marriage, war, catastrophe, and intimate domestic troubles: when newly widowed, Gunn and her daughters lived "a slave to brother wild," who "roars and shouts and calls her names" until at last "An end had come to Harry's screamings [...] No need to creep like frighted mouse! [...] From pure relief we all went mad." Surprisingly unsentimental behind the cheerful rhyme scheme. The final two journals see Gunn nearing 70, happily frightening her children with reckless driving and beer-drinking in the Tyrols until a concealed health crisis brings her close to death. The last pages close with the exhausted hope that all is well; Gunn would die later that same year. A unique and personal history of a woman made self-reliant by necessity, as independent as her era would allow and sometimes more so. Four octavos, one small quarto. Five handwritten, hand-illustrated journals, all in paper wraps. Sewn bindings have separated or loosened in places, with chipping and wear along spines and edges and some soil to wraps. Between 19-57 pages. 1928 journal not bound. All pages present in all volumes, with light toning along edges and occasional creasing but generally clean. 1926 journal reinforced at spine with blue cloth tape. Written in crisp calligraphic handwriting in black pen on blank journal pages; some traces of ruled guidelines in pencil remain. Illustrated throughout in black ink over pencil sketches, with occasional flourishes in red ink for emphasis.

Very good plus.
Description
(London): Sceptre, 2003. First printing. Very good plus.. Amy Winehouse's personal copy of this gritty London novel by one of her father's favorite writers. Winehouse was a known reader; both she and her family commented on this aspect of her personality over the years in interviews. The Amy Winehouse Collection, sold by us in 2025, contained more than 225 volumes from her library that amply demonstrated this. One could easily recognize the teenager who loved Salinger, the nerd who acquired numerous graphic novels, the training vocalist reading multiple Frank Sinatra biographies, and the touring musician just looking for a good read to pass the time on the road. This title, a duplicate from that larger collection and here offered separately, is no exception. Both Arnott and this book specifically were cited by Winehouse's father, Mitch, in a joint 2006 BBC Radio interview. Asked about their favorite fictional Londoner, Mitch replied: "Harry Starks, from THE LONG FIRM, Jake Arnott. BBC: Telly or book? Mitch: No the books [...] LONG FIRM and what was the other one? TRUE CRIME. BBC: He's a good writer isn't he? Mitch: Fabulous. BBC: Gets that sense of place and time so well. Mitch: Absolutely, 50s and 60s. Great. BBC: And that was your era I guess as well? Mitch: Yeah that's right. Right on." A touching memento from one of the most indelible musical artists of the early 21st century. 7.25'' x 5''. Original color photographic wrappers. [4], 338, [10] pages. Minor creasing and sunning to spine. Pages a bit toned. Mild shelfwear. Overall clean and sound. Provenance: The Estate of Amy Winehouse via Julien's Auctions, Los Angeles (Property From The Life And Career Of Amy Winehouse, November 6th and 7th, 2021, lot 313). A copy of the limited edition slipcased catalogue is provided. Julien's auction postcard for lot 313 loosely laid in. Housed in a custom black and pink archival clamshell box.

Description
Istanbul: Galeri Mana, 2013. Paperback. VG (Wraps show shelfwear along edges and corners; pages are clean and bright; binding is solid.). Brown wraps with red metallic lettering; 77, 51 pp.; richly illustrated. Galeri Manâ is pleased to announce Sarkis' solo exhibition kiz-Twin in Istanbul from May 23 to July 6, 2013. This first solo exhibition of Sarkis at Galeri Manâ will present a new installation by the artist, bringing together his most recent works. In Ikiz/Twin, Sarkis creates a universe of dualities at work in multiple layers. Copper surfaces with their reflective and transmissive properties take the central stage in a setting where each floor of the gallery space acts as an original twin to the other. The twins are endowed with minor distortions expressed in the time lapse and spatial divide between the two floors, and also in the substance and the form of each work. Each object is encountered twice but both are of essence, referring to the founding dualisms of the human experience and conception of the universe. This duality is transcended only by the sound element of the exhibition. A musical score fills the entire space; also connecting the exhibition to Sarkis' Ballads installation at the former shipyard in Rotterdam, the distant, ringing sound of bells conveys the song of two whales in dialogue as Sarkis engages in his own conversation with John Cage.-- Press release.

Description
Havana: Gabinete Nacional de Identificación, [193-]. 8x8 inch sheet, some creasing, staple holes at top, penciled notations on the verso. Undated, but photos are identified as having been taken in 1937. Most text is in English; apparently sent to other legal jurisdictions in search of further information about the suspect. The two sides provide photographs and fingerprints of Ozawa, the son of a Japanese-American stockbroker, who was suspected of violating narcotics laws and impersonating a physician in Havana. Lists several aliases, and notes that he had been seen wearing the uniform of the Japanese Navy. Seeks further information about Ozawa's activities. A news item printed in the Havana Post of February 10, 1937 reported that the Havana Secret Police were holding Ozawa “while they investigated the possibility that he has been engaged in smuggling narcotics and espionage here. . . . Ozawa was dressed in the uniform of a Japanese naval lieutenant-commander and told police he was a naval attaché of the legation of his country in Havana, but, according to police, this was denied by the Nipponese officials. . . .” He also attempted to secure medical jobs in the United States, falsely claiming to be a graduate of the University of California Medical School.
