In 1965, Johnson nominated Fortas to the Supreme Court. He later tried to promote him to Chief Justice of the United States, which was unsuccessful due to a filibuster. They had an extremely close relationship, and the nomination was seen as Johnson trying to maintain his influence after leaving office. The next year, Fortas had to step down from the Supreme Court due to a financial scandal. Johnson and Fortas had a very close relationship throughout their political careers, with this photograph and note being an example of that. This photograph is in very fine condition with professional framing.

A scarce Hutchinson Family sheet, published in 1855, with an abolition theme. The song goes, in part: “The captive now begins to rise and burst his chains asunder, While Politicians stand aghast in anxious fear and wonder. No longer shall the bondman sigh beneath the galling fetters, He sees the Dan of Freedom nigh, and reads the golden letters…” It also discusses alcohol, within a larger theme of good triumphing over evil. The song is included in some songsters but this standalone version is quite uncommon, with one copy held at Dartmouth. In 1855 the Hutchinson Family Singers continued extensive touring across the northeastern United States, presenting concert programs that combined abolitionist songs, temperance material, and political commentary aligned with reform movements. They had embraced abolitionism as a cause about a decade earlier with a string of compositions including “Get Off the Track” and “The Bereaved Slave Mother.”.

Moderate edge wear, some creasing and scuffing to covers. Occasional dust-soiling to text. An informative trio of daily report books recording work performed by a field worker of the West Penn Gas Company in the last decade of the 19th century. Each leaf is a separate partially-printed daily report filled out by Samuel McCutcheon from June 1, 1892 to March 24, 1894. McCutcheon records the numbers and names of wells, the "estimated amount of water blown off," the "location of line drip," and the "estimated amount of water blown off" of each line drip. McCutcheon's maintenance records provide unique insight into the functionality of dozens of gas wells near Pittsburgh belonging to the West Penn Gas Company during the peak of the Pennsylvania oil boom.

Set of 38 monthly lesson plans for school art teachers, each containing a new column ("Intimate Comments in the Field of Art") with an overview of new publications and exhibitions, followed by an illustrated project for schoolchildren with target grade levels, working materials, educational goals, and detailed instructions. Lessons for the older grades tend towards the technical (Figure Drawing; Creating Interesting and Unusual Landscapes; Mural Making), while ideas for younger students are typically thematic and didactic: The Indian Village; Robinson Crusoe; Thanksgiving "to Acquaint Children with the Manners and Customs of the Pilgrims." The editor's monthly column changes rapidly with the onset of World War II. From the untroubled and apolitical notes of 1932: "'Kultur' in Germany has done what 'Culture' in America has been vainly trying to do for many years. It has abolished the billboard along the countrysides of Prussia, which constitutes two-thirds of the Reich...The Ministry asserts that the re-awakening enthusiasm of German youth for the fatherland is hindered by the presence of 'hideous' outdoor advertising." -- to issues from 1941 and after, noting local programs on "Art Programs and Activities for Wartime" and the first report from the Honolulu Academy of Arts since December 7th, 1941: "Hawaii's museum had been working on plans for over two years, so when the bombs did fall the staff was ready for action...[W]ithin two days after 'Pearl Harbor' a new show was installed." As the war years continue, editorials spotlight the use of the arts in therapy for disabled soldiers and sailors as part of the Armed Services Program of the Museum of Modern Art; a new "Art in War" feature added to American Artist magazine; March 1943 features a project for third-graders on Living in War-Time, with their own commentary ("Every girl wants to do her share, it is her duty to her country...Uncle Sam needs clean children in his army.") Reporting on Art in Britain, Jacobs writes: "All boys and girls are obliged to work in the arts. Description: 1930. Very Good. An Art Deco toile fabric that captures the glamour of alcohol during Prohibition -- cocktail shaker, martini glasses, snazzily and elegantly dressed people, a door with a sign saying "Private House" -- this an explicit nod to Prohibition, we believe -- a background repeat of stars, this evoking the night and all its frolic and forbidden pleasures, a flying stairway -- is that a reference to a speakeasy, or a "stairway to Heaven", or both? -- and not least,the bottles of gin. We don't know the make of this fabric, and our dating, which is really circa 1930, has to be on the mark. It is possible that it was made in England, where one could drink freely, but there was plenty of awareness of Prohibition, and the effect on culture of Prohibition had freshet of spillover on culture outside the US. We have two pieces of the fabric. The larger piece, 152 by 43 cm, has two columns, and we are of the thinking this captures the entirety of the toile design -- or put another way, represented are all the motifs, which are then just repeated. But we can't guarantee this. One column shows people drinking and some of the settings where they do it suggested. The parallel column is entirely of the objects associated with drink -- bottles, glasses, cocktail shakers. The second piece is just of the column with drinkers. It is 99 by 20 cm. We can't imagine an aesthetic more appropriate for the subject than Art Deco, which was then the prevailing Modernist style, but also, the most immediate imagery of the era for many of us is from innumerable Hollywood films depicting sophisticates, Art Deco is everywhere, from the lettering and decoration of the film credits to the decor of the apartments, the clubs and other settings. The fabric design also has a levity as well, such as the branding of the gin as "High & Dry" Gin. These light touches go along with the sophisticated aura that drinking had inspired, as epitomized by Nick and Nora Charles. (The novel was first published shortly after the repeal of Prohibition but the glamour of drinking and all its associations lingered long after.) The Art Deco style manifests itself in many ways, among them, the streamlined illustration, not abstract, but economical and minimal in its depiction of people and objects. Also the simplicity of ornamentation -- ruled lines, stars -- not to mention the color choices. The smaller piece has a number of small holes, and spots where the fabric has worn thin. The larger has considerably less deterioration, butit too has a hole, a tear, etc. That said, these flaws really don't affect how one might display the pieces, we believe.
