Description
Paris: Maurice de Brunoff, 1913. Limited edition. Hardcover. Very good to fine condition. 1/80. Small Elephant Folio. [6], 49pp. (text), 77 leaves (plates), [8]pp. Uncut at fore- and bottom edges. Original gilt-stamped full vellum, with gilt vignette on cover, gilt lettering and ruling on spine. Top edge gilt. Laid in, an original pochoir-highlighted watercolor signed and dated in pencil by the artist in lower right margin, protected by modern mylar. Mounted photogravure frontispiece portrait of Leon Bakst with his facsimile signature below gravure. Title page printed in red and black. Limitation page with publisher's signature. Additional publisher's signature on verso of first front free endpaper. Historiated head- and tailpieces after Bakst. Chapter titles and initials printed in red. Lev Samoylovich Rosenberg (Bakst), painter and stage designer, realized his greatest artistic success in the Alesandrinksy and Maryinsky theaters, and later from 1901 to 1921 with Diaghilev at the Ballet Russe where he designed more productions than any other artist. Theater and costume designs for more than ten ballet works appear in this splendid deluxe edition containing 77 tipped-in plates, all but one after Bakst, 4 of them folding and 50 in full color, with pochoir highlights. The striking plates of Leon Bakst's stage sets and costumes for the Ballet Russe are accompanied by synopses of the plays by Jean Cocteau for whom they were designed. Bakst’s brilliant control of color, line and decoration give his stage pictures a visual rhythm. Color and chromatic combinations were used emotionally and sensuously. The splendid costumes are richly decorated with a myriad of motifs and decorative shapes. Captions for each plate on facing plates. Text in French. Covers with minor smudging, interior in near fine to fine condition.

London: Printed for Nath. Brook at the Angel in Corn Hill, 1662. Duodecimo (15 x 8.5 cm.), 123, [5], [14] pages. Table of contents. Publisher's advertisements at rear. Title within rule border. Printer's name from British Library record. Attributed to "W.M. " by Wing. Fourth printing; originally issued in 1655 by Nathaniel Brooks. Generally considered to be the final of the three parts of The Queen's Closet Opened, also first issued by Brook (1655), the other parts being The Pearle of Practice, and A Queen's Delight. The preface to the first and to some later editions of QCO identifies the author as "W.M.", a former servant of Queen Henrietta Maria. Concerning the sustenance found within, Oxford points to "such interesting recipes as To make a Devonshire white-pot, To Make an Outlandish dish (hog's liver seasoned with aniseed), The Jacobin's Pottage, To make a Battalia Pye, To make a Stumpe Pye, The Countesse of Rutlands Receipt of Making the rare Banbury Cake, which was so much praised at her daughters (the Lady Chaworths) wedding, To make a Fat Lambe of a Pig, and, To make poor Knights. ~ Pages darkened; loss at edge of final two leaves, just affecting text, but text still legible. Eighteenth century calf, re-backed at an early date and with general wear to the edges; title and date in gilt at the spine. Armorial bookplate of Sir Robert Chester, and later ink ownership signature "Frederick Phillips II", both to front paste-down. Scarce. [OCLC records just eleven copies of this printing by itself (and at least one other where it is bound together with the Queen's Closet Opened; Bitting 53; ESTC R218359; Notaker 538.7; (Oxford (c.f pages 26-27 for notes on the work as part of The Queen's Closet Opened); Pennell 133 (later edition); Wing M92A].

Description
1881. [Early Photography - Theatrical Entertainment] Albumen Cabinet Card Photograph with 48 oval cameo photographs of performers in "Haverly's Original Mastodon Minstrels" theatrical troupe, captioned with names and titles. 1881. Approx. 4.1" x 6.5". Inscribed on verso with large gold and red photography studio insignia "Houseworth's Souvenir Hotographs [sic]" and on recto "Houseworth, the Leading Photographer, 12 Montgomery Street, San Francisco, Cal.", signatures in ink on verso "Edward Edward Niles," "Grace Niles G Grace". J.H. Haverly was an American theatre manager and promoter, known for his production of "minstrel shows," a racist form of theatrical entertainment wherein white performers donned blackface makeup and portrayed skits and characters which relied on offensive stereotypes. Haverly's troupe was noted for its impressive size and scope, involving forty to one hundred different performers, and lavish production value. The Mastodon Minstrels drew comparison to P.T. Barnum and other successful circuses of the day for their use of music, dance, acrobatics, and burlesque. One notable portrait at the center of the card shows the troupe's manager, Charles Frohman, who would go on to become a prolific producer of American theatre and is best remembered for producing J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up. Both top corners worn and rounded. Small 1/4" tear to mount at bottom edge not affecting image. An interesting artifact advertising a problematic theatrical tradition.

14 black & white illus. 36 unnumbered pages. Irregularly shaped small 4to (200 x 200 mm.), die-cut corners (spine faintly rubbed), staple-bound. [Chicago]: The University of Chicago Library, 1986. An important exhibition catalogue as well as reference work on artists’ books. This catalogue was designed by the book artist Buzz Spector (b. 1948), and his pencil notes for the mock-up have been reproduced in this final version. Jeffrey Abt, the organizer of the exhibition, writes in an insightful essay: “The contemporary artist’s book…represents an evolution of the book’s use from a vehicle for text and its illustration to an artistically integrated, sometimes sculptural object. Though superficially the artist’s book may bear little resemblance to the common codex, it nonetheless continues many of the earlier uses and forms of the book.” This exhibition featured several dozen artists’ books by practitioners such as Roberta Allen, Douglas Beube, Meryl Brater, Timothy C. Ely, Jane Freeman, Kay Hines, Jana Kluge, Richard Long, Andrew Masullo, Scott McCarney, Brenda Miller, Kevin Osborn, Bruce Schnabel, Berty Skuber, Keith A. Smith, Buzz Spector, Yoko Terauchi, Erica van Horn, Cornelia Vogel, Paul Zelevansky, etc. Fine copy. The page numbers and headings are not written in pencil. ❧ A. Desjardin, The Book on Books on Artists Books (2nd ed.: 2013) 151.
