Faint dampstain to the upper outer corner of the rear cover and the last 30 pages; light foxing on a few pages. Still Near Fine
Description
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1907. First Edition. Hardcover. Faint dampstain to the upper outer corner of the rear cover and the last 30 pages; light foxing on a few pages. Still Near Fine. Original gilt-decorated and lettered brown cloth. SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper with a MANUSCRIPT variant version of the poem “Belgium” in Wharton's hand: Not with her ruined silver spires, Not with her cities shamed & rent, Perish the imperishable fires That shape the homestead from the tent. Wherever men are staunch & free, A fearless footstep shall she set, And, homeless, to great nations be The home of all that made them great. Edith Wharton Paris, Nov 11th 1914 The poem was published in 1917 in A TREASURY OF WAR POETRY: BRITISH AND AMERICAN POEMS OF THE WORLD WAR 1914-1917. This manuscript version differs from the published version with a few minor changes and the use of the line "A fearless footstep shall she set' instead of the eventually published "There shall she keep her fearless state," and with the use of the past tense in the last line rather than the present tense in the published version. Wharton spent the war helping relief agencies and was particularly interested in working with refugees from Belgium.

Description
Salt Lake City, UT: Geo. Q. Cannon & Sons Co., Printers and Publisher, 1897. Twenty-Second Edition. Leather Bound. Very Good. 464pp. Vigesimoquarto (24mo) [12 cm] Full brown leather with a gilt tooled spine. Title (L.D.S. Hymns) gilt stamped on the backstrip. Floral endpapers. All edges gilt. Gilt at head of the spine rubbed. Light rubbing to the extremities. Stitching sporadically visible in the inside margins. Thread tied along inside margin of pp. 272/73. Light scribble on p. 161. Numerals in the pagination very occasionally lacking. Contemporary owner's inscription on front free endpaper: "Jno. T. Thain Jr. / Cardiff / 188 Cathays / Terrace / Jan 1." This likely refers to John Teague Thain Jr. (1866-1905) who was born in Willard, Box Elder, Utah, lived in Swansea, Glamorgan, Wales in 1901, and died in Logan, Utah. The Thain family is featured in the book "From Amroth to Utah" by Roscoe Howells. Flake 1783. From the Preface to the Twenty-Second Edition- "No book published by or for the Latter-day Saints has run through so many editions or been sold so extensively as the Hymn Book, of which this is the twenty-second edition. The demand for it continues unabated and since the publication of the Latter-day Saints' Psalmody, which contains music for every hymn in this book, a new interest has been added to it and its usefulness enhanced. In this edition will be found a metrical index which the book formerly did not contain. This feature will be especially valuable to choirs. A few hymns have also been added to the end of the volume. That these additions may prove acceptable to the public, and that the book may continue its cheering and consoling mission indefinitely, is the desire of The Publishers. Salt Lake City, Utah. June, 1897.

Description
4 pages on one leaf, 4to, with original envelope and typed transcript. Normal aging and browning, slight separation at folds. The letters were written by George Roden who was born in 1841 from Newark, New Jersey, who was the son of English immigrants, and served in the 2nd New Jersey Infantry regiment. He was a corporal when this letter was written. The letter is addressed "Dear Folks at home" and tells his family how happy he was to receive their letters after waiting so long, but he also includes a description of the Battle of Gaines' Mills; 'Our four companies left as they were without any support whatever to contend with over a brigade of the enemy surrounding us on three sides they poured in an awful cross fire, but even amid that, and their insane yells, our boys rallied around the dear old flag three times. Once They were taken, but as the fellow (a Lieut.) grasped it from our wounded color sergeant, a ball went through his heart and again they were retaken." He also adds an interesting account of his company's reserve role in the Battle of White Old Swamp. See guide to Roden family papers at the William L. Clements Library.
