Description
[Liege, Belgium]: The Author, [1977]. First Edition.. Original printed wrappers.. Very good; modest sunning to the backstrip. A news article about Taylor neatly spot mounted to the front endsheet facing the title [no offset - yet].. 8vo, [8], [9] - 301, [302 - blank], [14 - index], [2 - blank], [2 - printer's slug, verso blank] pp. This copy with a dated presentation inscription signed by the author on the Dedication page reading: "For Sylvie [printed] and Igor etc. / I hope you enjoy / Art Taylor / Jan. 13, 1978" [autograph]. The rare, true first, of one of the great books of modern jazz history. Taylor - who had lived in Europe most of his career - self-published this book based on interviews of the preceding decade. Taylor played drums in a series of bands in the 1950s that defined modern jazz. The book records his one-on-one conversations with a "who's who" of jazz artists of the period. And what conversations! As an accomplished musician and Afro-American he was able to query his subjects in a manner that no one else could approach. An invaluable resource.

Description
Verona: Plain Wrapper Press, 1972. Portfolio. The work consists of 7 paper folders (title page, colophon and 5 poems each poem with a linocut illustration). The folders measure approximately 7 3/4 x 8 5/8 inches. The portfolio measures 7 7/8 x 8 15/16 inches. The sheets in this portfolio are printed on C. M. Fabriano paper that was hand tinted by the printer and the artist; text clean, unmarked. The portfolio is essentially a chemise with fore-edge silk-ribbon ties, the boards are covered with marbled paper created by Bonnie Walker. This all comes in a folding drop-back box witch measures 7 7/8 x 9 inches. The box is covered in navy book cloth and perhaps is not original to the production of this work, as I do not see it called for in Fantasies and Hark Knocks. SIGNED by the artist on 4 of the folders. GIL123-006. Very Good. LIMITED EDITION of 81 copies, this is number 32. This work consists of 5 short prose pieces in Italian by Mirek with English translations by Gabriel Rummonds, and include 5 multicolor linocuts by the artist Mirek (Miroslav Zahradka). Le Streghette means "Little Witches" in Italian. This work combines the humorous text about little witches written by Miroslav Zahradka with his multicolor linocuts of scantily dressed young women. Mirek was an imaginative painter and an illustrator of children's books. This work is a children's book for adults, and Rummonds made his English translations a bit more off-color than the original Italian text. This is the sixth production of the Plain Wrapper Press as documented in Rummonds' Fantasies. REFERENCE: Rummonds, Fantasies and Hard Knocks, pp. 212-221.

SIGNED by the illustrator. GIL921-010. Fine. LIMITED EDITION of 250 copies. The colophon reads: "There are 250 copies of this first full printing of Luke Hansard's Autobiography, illustrated by John Lawrence's wood engravings and informed by Robin Myers' notes. It was printed on a 1963 Heidelberg Cylinder Press for the text, and an 1853 Albion hand press for the engravings. The paper is mouldmade Alice Zerkall. The Hansard text was set in Van Dijck by Ronset, the last job to be set before their hot metal closure in November 1988. Bill Hughes at Solo-Type set the hanging shoulder notes in 8pt Garamond italic, and Jonathan Stephenson & Geoffrey Bamford set the rest of the text matter in Van Dijck at The Rocket Press. A signed print by John Lawrence accompanies each copy of the book, which is dedicated by the printer to his mother, Heather Lawrence, who was a fine scholar and who saw the beginnings but not the end of this pleasurable effort. Simon Lawrence, Christmas 1990." Luke Hansard was an English printer who printed the Journals of the House of Commons from 1774 until his death in 1828. He was born in Norwich and apprenticed to the Norwich printer, Stephen White. When his apprenticeship was completed, he headed for London, entering the printing office of John Hughs, printer to the British House of Commons. He became a partner in the business in 1774, taking over all operations of the business by 1800. Among those whose friendship Hansard won through his profession were Edmund Burke, Samuel Johnson, and Robert Orme. REFERENCE: Number 25 in the online Bibliography of the Fleece Press (fleece press dot com). Worldcat shows 44 copies; some of these are the Printing History Association paperback reprints.
