Description
26 hand-colored lithographic plates, comprised of title leaf and plates. numbered 1-15, 15bis, 16-24, depicting captioned caricatures of leading French politicians and military figures at the end of the Second Empire and the beginning of the Third Republic, including Adolphe Thiers, Jules Favre, Ernest Picard, Joseph Vinoy, August-Alexandre Ducrot, Louis Jules Trochu, François d'Orléans Prince of Joinville, Duc d'Aumale, Jules Dufaure, Nicolas Changarnier, Jules Simon, President Devienne of the French Courts, Pierre Bonaparte, Émile Olivier, and Henri d'Artois (Comte de Chambord), and additional contemporary subjects such as Otto von Bismarck, by the caricaturist de Frondat (who worked on other noted satirical Parisian papers such as Le Sifflet and La Nouvelle Lune, possibly under multiple pseudonyms). Leaves with small variations in size and paper type, minor edgewear and toning, minor soiling or dust-staining, some chipping to title leaf and one 2-inch tear. Small 4to. Leaves loose, housed in custom-made box. Paris (Duclaux) n.d. (ca. 1871). Extremely scarce volume satirizing the powerful politicians and military leaders who emerged to form the Third Republic following Napoleon III's surrender at the end of the Franco Prussian War. Our research suggests the various trim sizes and paper types are probably explained by individual issue of the plates in late 1870 and early 1871 (before the Paris Commune) with the volume being joined together with supplementary plate and title leaf in 1872. (Berleux, La Caricature Politique en France Pendant la Guerre ... 1870-1871, p. 70.) This collection is lacking a plate 16bis, which is known to exist in at least one other edition. As of July 2021, OCLC locates only 3 copies in North America.
