Description
24/05/1879. “Shall count on getting the extracts from your Journal about Mr Lincon's murder & funeral soon as you can conveniently send them.”Poet Walt Whitman greatly admired Abraham Lincoln. Whitman related that the two men would pass each other on the street in Washington during the Civil War and tip their hats to each other. Whitman was deeply affected by Lincoln’s assassination, writing several poems as elegies. Shortly after Lincoln was killed in April 1865, Whitman wrote the first of his Lincoln poems, “Hush’d Be the Camps Today”. In the following months, he wrote two more: his famous “O Captain! My Captain!” and “When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom’d”. Both appeared in his collection “Sequel to Drum-Taps” later that year. The poems - particularly “O Captain!"" - were well received, and popular both upon publication and in the following years. In 1871, his fourth poem on Lincoln, “This Dust Was Once the Man”, was published, and the four were grouped together as the ""President Lincoln's Burial Hymn"" cluster. In 1881, the poems were republished in the ""Memories of President Lincoln"" cluster of Leaves of Grass.Whitman saw himself as an interpreter of Lincoln. He gave a series of lectures on Lincoln, and was always looking for new material to shed light on the man for whom he had such admiration and affection.Alfred Janson Bloor was an architect and a poet who had worked for Frederick Law Olmstead in 1859-1860, at the time Olmstead was designing Central Park. He took exception to Whitman's contemptuous characterization of actors in his 1879 lecture on the Death of Lincoln, and wrote to Whitman to let him know, also telling him of a first-hand account of the night of Lincoln's murder from Clara Harris [daughter of Senator Ira Harris], who had attended the play with the Lincolns on that evening. Whitman quoted Bloor's defense of actors in a piece for the New York Tribune on May 24, 1879. Whitman also wrote Bloor on that date. The Whitman Archives states “The location of the original manuscript is unknown,” but it has been discovered and we present it now.Autograph letter signed, New York, May 24, 1879, to Alfred Janson Bloor, regarding his letter to the Tribune quoting Bloor's defense of actors, and requesting Bloor's account of Lincoln's death as heard through Clara Harris. “My dear Mr Bloor, I have returned the two pamphlets - which I suppose you have rec'd. In a letter in the Tribune of to-day I have printed (as I some time since notified you) - what you said - (well said) - about actors. I remain here till latter part of next week - then to Camden, New Jersey, which is my permanent p o address. Shall count on getting the extracts from your Journal about Mr Lincon's murder & funeral soon as you can conveniently send them. Walt Whitman.”Bloor would send Whitman his description of Miss Clara Harris's account of Ford's Theater the night of Lincoln's assassination on June 7, and excerpts from his journals two days later. In the account given to Bloor the Friday following the assassination, Harris describes a jovial Lincoln, laughing and jesting during the carriage ride to the theater, and in their box, the smell of gunpowder, her fiancée Henry Rathbone's injury trying to stop Booth from fleeing, as well as the deep, genuine grief of Mrs. Lincoln. Whitman himself had based his Lincoln lectures largely on the first-hand account of his friend Peter Doyle, who had been in the balcony on the night of the murder, so Bloor's and Harris's contribution must have been of great interest. Bloor confirmed sending what Whitman requested, writing that he had sent ""a copy of the selections you made from my journal, and also an account of the information Miss Harris…”

Grand Leicestershire Steeple Chase. On the 12th. of March, 1829. London: R. Ackermann, Junr.Sporting Gallery, Jan[uar]y. 1st, 1830. First edition. Oblong folio (16 1/2 x 20 1/2 inches; 420 x 521 mm.). Eight superb hand colored aquatint plates by C. Bentley after Henry Alken, all with descriptive letterpress. Plates mounted on card, with tissue guards. Plate size 14 1/2 x 18 1/4 inches; 370 x 463 mm. Plate image size 10 1/8 x 14 1/4 inches; 257 x 361 mm. Mid-twentieth century three quarter maroon morocco over marbled boards, ruled in gilt, front cover with rectangular maroon morocco label lettered in gilt. A very fine and complete set of these rare prints with exceptionally fine and bright original hand coloring. A steeplechase is a distance horse race in which competitors are required to jump diverse fence and ditch obstacles. Steeplechasing is primarily conducted in Ireland (where it originated), the United Kingdom, Canada, United States, Australia and France. The name is derived from early races in which orientation of the course was by reference to a church steeple, jumping fences and ditches and generally traversing the many intervening obstacles in the countryside. The first recorded steeplechase over a prepared track with fences was run at Bedford in 1810, although a race had been run at Newmarket in 1794 over a mile with five-foot bars every quarter mile. The first recognized English National Steeplechase took place on Monday 8 March 1830. The 4-mile (6.4 km) race, organized by Thomas Coleman of St.Albans, was run from Bury Orchard, Harlington in Bedfordshire to the Obelisk in Wrest Park, Bedfordshire. The winner was Captain Macdowall on "The Wonder", owned by Lord Ranelagh, who won in a time of 16 minutes 25 seconds. Report of the event appeared in the May and July editions of Sporting Magazine in 1830. The most famous steeplechase in the world is the Grand National run annually at Aintree Racecourse, in Liverpool, since its inception in 1836 (the official race was held three years later), which in 2014 offered a prize fund of £1 million. The Grand Leicestershire Steeple Chase in 1829, preceded the first Grand National by seven years. This set represents "The" steeplechase of the time, those taking part were members of the Quorn Hunt to whom the dedication is addressed by the publishers. Each plate is inscribed with the following descriptions: - Plate 1: Nimrod reading the articles of the race; "Any one opening a gate; going more than a hundred yards. on a road; or if discovered three days after the race to have, either directly or indirectly, caused any fence to be broken or cut down; to be distanced. Anyone crossing or jostling another at a fence, or riding over another when down, to be distanced. No servant to be allowed to ride for this stake". The following are the entrants: "Mr Barclay; Mr Maxse's grey horse 'King of the Valley', riden by the very celebrated Dick Christian; Nicholson on his back; Captain Ross's bay mare 'Polecat', riden by himself; Sir Francis Mackenzie's roan gelding 'Spartacus' ridden by Mr Guilfort; Mr Barclay's bay gelding 'Bantum', jockeyed by Mr. Beacher". Plate 2: Captain Ross leading - Mr Field Nicholson taking a line of his own. 'Magic' was riden by Mr Field Nicholson in his cool determined manner, and the tine he took to the left of the others gave him an advantage as he thereby avoided two distressing bottoms. He had but one fall at a desperate place, where independent of a very strong fence, there was a watering place for cattle, but which Mr Heycock on 'Clinker' had just got well over before him. 'Magic', however, cleared both brooks in a very gallant style. Plate 3: The Cocktail Floored. From left to right Captain Ross, Bill Wright, Mr Beacher, Dick rails, with a wide ditch to boot, - which fall threw Mr Beacher completely out. Plate 4: The Captain still leading. Here the Captain rode at wht he at a distance considered a weak place, which turned out to be an enclosed pond - but got well over. Plate 5: A rich scene; and such as no other County can exhibit. "What kills is the pace!" said the late Lord Forester; and no man put it oftener to the test. Captain Ross's chance on the mare was now out, his stirrup having been left hanging in a thick fence. Plate 6: Dick Christian's last fall; commonly called "A Header". "'Tis nothing when you are used to it". Plate 7: Clinker was sixty yards ahead, and within two small fields of winning, when, making a trifling mistake at a fence, his bridle slipped over his ears, and thus his chance was out. Plate 8: The Winning Post at Billesden Coplow. This covert is celebrated for having produced the stoutest foxes in the Quorn Hunt. Here Mr Maher was appointed judge, and the horses were thus placed; Sir Harry Goodricke's Magic 1 Mr Maxse's King of the Valley 2 Mr Patrick's Lazy Bet 3 Captain Ross's Clinker 4 The other three, nowhere... Description
Monterrey: June 4, 1836. About very good.. Printed broadside, approximately 8.5 x 8.5 inches. Trimmed at lower edge, with no loss of text. Shallow, one-inch section torn away at lower edge, also not affecting text. Contemporary manuscript rubric. Light tanning and creasing. A scarce broadside dated June 4, 1836, in which the Governor of Nuevo Leon, Juan Nepomuceno de la Garza, announces the capture of Santa Anna by the Texans to his citizens. "Though [the first] announcement of Santa Anna's capture was made on May 19, it was known to the Mexican government at least as early as May 15, on which day Tornel wrote to Filosola acknowledging the latter's despatch of April 25 giving the news" -- Streeter. Thus, word of developments first traveled to Mexico City and then emanated to the states, with the result that this broadside did not announce the fate of Santa Anna until over a month after the fact, even though the state practically borders Texas. In his terse announcement, Nepomuceno states that Santa Anna had been captured "near Harrisburg," a former town between Houston and San Jacinto, in what should have been the "crowning glory" of the Mexican campaign against Texas: "Nuevoleonenses: Una corta seccion de nuestro ejército que mandaba en persona el benemerito de la Pátria, el General Presidente D. Antonio Lopez de Santa-Anna, hà sido sorprendida á las immediaciones de Harrisbourg y preso su ilustre Gefe. Una sèrie de triunfos gloriosos orlaba las sienes del soldado mejicano, y Harrisbourg era el ultimo punto que debía coronar tan heroicos esfuerzos; dispúsolo de otra suerte el árbitro de las Naciones. ¿Quien puede enmendar sus obras?" He continues, telling his citizens that fresh sacrifices will be required to achieve the return of Santa Anna and to avoid "abjection and ignominy:" "Conciudadanos: el honor y la justicia á la lid. El Congreso y el Gobierno general toman ya medidas enérgicas y fuertes para reparar este pequeño golpe y conseguir la libertad del benemérito de la Pátria Santa Anna: un furor santo enciende los pechos de los mejicanos: vosotros lo sois, y os habeis sacrificando en esta guerra sagrada: nuevos sacrificios ecsige la Pátria. ¿Y quien puede economizar los intereses ni la vida misma por obtener en cambio la abyeccion y la ignominia?" This proclamation is not a reprint or a bando of the federal announcements of Santa Anna's capture, but an original message from the Governor of Nuevo Leon to its inhabitants, printed and issued in Monterrey on June 4, 1836. We locate only two other copies of this broadside, in the Daughters of the Republic of Texas Library and at Yale. Streeter lists examples of state announcements of the capture known to him, but the present broadside is not among them. Streeter Texas 884 (ref).

Description
[Paris]: Imp. de Lemercier, [1840?]. First Edition. Original cloth backed publisher's burgundy patterned, gilt stamped cloth. This copy has the original binder's ticket from Barth in Tours.. Very good; title-page somewhat spotted; some modest scuffing to the binding; hinges strained; the plates have some scattered, modest spotting.. Oblong folio. Tinted lithographic title and 20 tinted lithographic plates. A facility for juvenile delinquents that was founded by Frederic Demetz in 1840. It was revolutionary at the time because it was the first segregated penal institution for juveniles. The goal was to rehabilitate juvenile criminals by promoting manual labor, education, religious, and moral instruction. The book offered here illustrates daily life at Mettray. The camp fell into disarray and overcrowding in the late 19th century and became infamous for its cruel and harsh treatment. Jean Genet spent time at Mettray as a youth and wrote about his experiences. The lithography is by Sauve, Tirpenne and Faivre after A Thierry. See J. Bourquin et E. Pierre, 'Une visite à Mettray par l'image: l'album de gravures de 1844,' in "Sociétés & Représentations", 2004/2 (no. 18), p. 207-216.

Boston: Printed by G. Rogers, for J. Edwards and S. Eliot., 1741. 47pp, but lacking the half title. Disbound, scattered spotting, Good+. Chauncy "was undoubtedly the most influential clergyman of his time in Boston, and, with the exception of Jonathan Edwards, in all New England" [DAB]. He was Edwards's most influential opponent of the Great Awakening and was, as DAB puts it, "a man of the intellect utterly distrusting the emotions as calculated to befog and pervert the mind." Here he explains that, "if any man be united in Christ," he becomes "a new creature, i.e. another man." This Sermon is an interesting window on the uncertainties and disruptions created by the Great Awakening. Chauncy delineates the changes that occur in such a person who comes to Christ; but he warns of "an undesirable excess...where the concern is carried to so great a height, as to discompose the mind." He reassures anyone who complains that "I han't had the experience of that light and joy in the LORD, which I hear of in others. My soul han't felt those raptures of delight and comfort, which is the case of one and another, I converse with; and it puts me upon questioning the goodness of my state." FIRST EDITION. Evans 4688. Description
Wichita Falls, Tx: Heydrick Mapping Company, 1976. About very good.. Blue line map, 45.5 x 42 inches. On paper. Folded. Toning across top and bottom portions, light edge wear. A late but nonetheless instructive oil map of Knox County, Texas, printed by the Heydrick Mapping Company which was known for its oil maps. Indeed, their slogan on the map indicates, "Oil men have used Heydrick maps since 1870." The legend shows various kinds of oil and gas wells -- producing, dry, drilled, etc. Most of the oil activity is along the southern part of the county, with a deep concentration of wells and oil companies noted across the D.G. Burnett lands. Dozens of oil companies are represented here, many of which would be gone when the Texas oil boom busted in the early-1980s, though production in Knox County was relatively steady through the lean times. Knox County is located between the DFW metroplex and Lubbock, and oil was discovered there in 1945. "Oil was discovered in Knox County in 1945. By 1946 the county's first successful oil well had been spudded on the Beavers Ranch, north of Benjamin; in subsequent years other wells were drilled in the southern part of the county. In 1948 oil production was only thirty-seven barrels, but in 1956 it reached 978,715, and in 1960, almost 2,415,000. County oil wells produced 2,065,000 barrels in 1965, 771,089 barrels in 1974, and 1,421,964 barrels in 1982. Production totaled about 888,000 barrels in 1990, and by January 1, 1991, almost 55,881,000 barrels had been taken from Knox County lands since discovery in 1945" - Handbook of Texas online. All Heydrick maps of Texas are scarce, regardless of when they were produced, with the vast majority being located in only one or two copies. OCLC shows one copy each of editions printed in 1930 and 1957, but not this 1976 version.
