Description
Washington: Beverley Tucker, 1855-59; George W. Bowman, 1861 and Thomas H. Ford 1860. Quarto. 12 Volumes in 13. As stated by Wagner-Camp, these reports were printed as they were received. There is no overall system or arrangement, nor are there general indices to the volumes, and as Camp has pointed out, there is the usual duplication of print and lithography by both houses of Congress. Some of the published volumes were lacking plates; others have a few duplicate plates. Of course, these faults are amply compensated by the richness of the material within and with illustrations that show the beauty found in the land, animals and its people of the mysterious American West during this period. A highly significant and monumental work. All uniformly bound in publishers in black cloth, decoratively stamped in blind, spines rebacked, renewing endpapers, lettering gilt, some corners bumped, some scattered foxing or toning to black and white plates, volume ii is an ex-library copy dated 1861. [Wagner-Camp-262; Wheat, Mapping the Trans Mississippi West IV, pp. 67-91] Full collation sent on request.

Description
Boston: Printed by S. Kneeland & T. Green, for D. Henchman in Cornhill, 1734. [4], 19, [1 blank] pp, as issued. With the half title ["Mr. Chauncy's Artillery-Election Sermon, June 3. 1734"]. Stitched, untrimmed. Moderately spotted, Good+. With the contemporary ownership signature of James Cushing, probably the New England Congregational minister. This is the prolific Chauncy's third published sermon during a long and eventful career. He explains that a martial spirit is compatible with, and indeed necessary to, a religious sensibility. Chauncy [1705-1787] "was undoubtedly the most influential clergyman of his time in Boston, and, with the exception of Jonathan Edwards, in all New England" [DAB]. A passionate American patriot, he was a friend of the American Revolution and foe of the Church of England's establishment in America. For years he criticized Great Britain for its treatment of the American colonies, expressing a sophisticated understanding of the nature of government and the natural rights of mankind. Chauncy draws his lesson from the "Careless, Quiet and Secure" people of Laish, who "were shamelessly negligent of their own safety." Foolishly, they "did not perplex their minds with concern about their enemies; had no sense of danger; were tho'tless of a surprise, and without expectation of any sudden assault." Asserting that the neglect of martial training is an affront to God, Chauncy urges "that military skill and valour, together with sobriety and a due decorum, will be promoted among our souldiers... Never let us desert our post, or fly from our colours." Evans 3758. ESTC W37716.

Fine in very good jacket.
Description
New York: Farrar, Straus and Company, 1963. First edition (stated). Fine in very good jacket.. First printing of Kerouac's autobiographical novel of his brother's death. Lightly fictionalized portrait of Kerouac's youth and his short-lived older brother Gerard, presented in a hazy glow of sanctity and urgent nostalgia. The first volume of the 'Duluoz legend,' VISIONS OF GERARD was written in 1956, though not published until 1963. While derided as 'hipster yawping' by contemporary critics, any irregularities of punctuation or slang are less striking than its pervasive religiosity; Kerouac himself esteemed it highly among his own works, and the Gerard of the book is less an accurately remembered child than absolute purity in a child's form, the catalyst for Kerouac's own apprehension of divine mysteries: "the definite and immortal idealism which had been imparted me by my holy brother." 8'' x 5.5''. Original quarter black cloth with decorative salmon-pink and white boards. Gilt-titled spine. In original unclipped ($3.95) dust jacket. Illustrations by James Spanfeller throughout. [2], 152 pages. Dampstaining to jacket spine, primarily visible on verso; 1'' closed tear to upper edge of rear joint, minor soil and spotting.

Description
New Mexico Historical Review, 1931 Book. Very fine. Soft cover. First separate edition, first appearing in the New Mexico Historical Review, 1930. Very scarce. Thin octavo. 24pp. 2 plates. Original light brown stiff wrappers printed in black. Minor crease to lower corner of rear wrapper, front wrapper half detached, else a fine and clean copy. John Philip Clum (1851-1932) copyrighted this work in 1930. Clum was Indian Agent at the San Carlos Apache Reservation in Arizona for three years beginning in 1874. He implemented a limited form of self-government on the reservation that was so successful that other reservations were closed and their residents moved to San Carlos. Clum was also the agent that captured Geronimo in April of 1877. Faced with many superior officers who strongly disagreed with his methods, and dogged by an uncaring Indian Bureau administration, Clum finally left his post as Indian Agent July 1, 1877. His successor freed Geronimo and his men, leading to fifteen years of bloodshed and Indian wars until Geronimo was re-captured by General Miles. Later, in 1880, Clum founded and was editor of the Tombstone Epitaph and became Mayor and Postmaster of Tombstone after its incorporation in 1881. Here, Clum recounts the history and culmination of his plan to take a party of Apache Indians as actors on a drama tour upon the stages of first class theatres in some of the larger cities of the East. This was in 1876, just after his resignation as Indian Agent at San Carlos. The plan was executed and the debut was at the Olympic Theatre at Saint Louis, Missouri. The troupe then visited Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and then back to San Carlos via Colorado. The illustrations include the playbill for the Olympic Theatre and a group photograph of "the Author and His Thespians" in Washington. [OCLC locates only a handful of copies in Arizona and other Southwest libraries, two in Southern California]. Very scarce..

Description
New York: Farrar, Straus, Giroux, 1988 With many full-page color illustrations by Maurice Sendak. Translated by Ralph Manheim. First edition, first printing. Signed by Sendak in blue pen on half-title page. Publisher's blue-gray cloth, with front board decoration stamped in blind, spine stamped in gilt, and pink endpapers; in its original white dust jacket, with front panel lavishly illustrated by Sendak, featuring cherubs and flowers, lettered in brown. About fine book, with a hint of toning to board edges, pages crisp and clean; near fine unclipped dust jacket, with a touch of rubbing to spine ends, a small closed tear to bottom edge of rear panel, and very light spotting to rear panel. Overall, a breathtakingly illustrated work. In this moving tale, a widow sends her daughter into the forest to escape an encroaching war. After wandering fearfully through the woods, the daughter eventually comes across the home of Saint Joseph, and she spends three days with him. At the end of the three days, she returns home to find that, in fact, thirty years have passed. Dear Mili was composed by the great master of fairy tales, Wilhelm Grimm. The tale has a fascinating history - written in a letter by Grimm to a young girl in 1816, the story stayed in the girl's family for more than 150 years, only coming to the public's attention in 1983. Wilhelm Grimm, and his brother Jacob, popularized many of the best-known fairy tales in history, such as Rapunzel, Hansel and Gretel, and Little Red Riding Hood. Maurice Sendak is regarded as one of the greatest children's book artists of the 20th century, whose books include Where the Wild Things Are (1963), In the Night Kitchen (1970), and Outside Over There (1981). . Inscribed by Illustrator. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included. Illus. by Sendak, Maurice.
