"Leon Samoilovitch Bakst (May 10, 1866 - December 28, 1924) was a Russian painter and scene and costume designer who revolutionized the arts in which he worked...Bakst came to prominence due to his involvement first with the World of Art group, which was edited by Sergei Diaghilev. Diaghilev would then become the founding director of the Ballet Russes and Bakst would become the design artist for the company, doing set and costume. Along the Marius Petipa as artistic director, their work would re-invigorate ballet in France with worldwide repercussions...In addition to revolutionizing set design, Bakst was an art instructor as well. During his visits to Saint Petersburg he taught in Zvantseva's school. One of his students was Marc Chagall." (New World Encyclopedia). HBS 68461. $7,500.

Description
Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1907. First thus. Fine. Large Paper Edition limited to 750 of which this is 183. Finely bound in half crushed morocco over marbled boards with gilt to spines. Twenty-five volumes (6 1/4 x 9 inches) occupying approximately 37 1/2 inches(95 1/4 cm.) of shelf space. Top edges brightly gilt. Remaining edges deckled. The following volumes signed in pencil by the illustrators: in volume one by C. E. Walmsley, eight by Ambrose Dudley, ten by Archibald Standish Hartrick, twelve by by Charles E. Brock, and sixteen by Frederick Pegram. In all a beautiful and pleasing illustrated set of George Eliot's works, which helped define the novel as a genre and brought women's experiences and inner lives into public dialogue. "No writer, not even Milton, is so dense and ample in his range of intellectual reference as George Eliot" (Myers). Defying gender expectations, Mary Ann Evans, writing under the pseudonym George Eliot, became famous for being a prolific writer who shaped the modern novel. Works like The Mill on the Floss, Daniel Deronda, and Middlemarch not only proved Eliot's intellectual dexterity by weaving together cultural references from religion, art, politics, and economics to comment on communities in flux; they also placed in context the rich interior lives of women, and the often agonizing experiences of women torn between social duty and the pursuit of self knowledge. "The language in which George Eliot expresses the basic commitment of literary realism--the recording of many lives intersecting in the medium of historical circumstance" made her a crucial figure for the genre's development, and for presenting a vision of society where the margins are ever evolving (Coovadia). Here, in 25 lovely large-paper volumes, her works are drawn together in one place, with illustrations of key locations and figures bound in throughout. Fine.

Description
12 folding leaves. 8vo, orig. patterned wrappers, orig. block-printed title label on upper cover, new stitching. Tokyo: Shosanodo shoten, 1909. First edition of the catalogue of a part of the library of the famous Shoheizaka Gakumonjo school, which was located in what is today Ueno Park. The school had its origins as a private Confucian temple, constructed by Razan Hayashi (1583-1657), but was turned into a state-run school under the direct control of the bakufu in 1797, following the Kansei Edict. The school, an official academy of the Tokugawa shogunate, produced many outstanding leaders. The catalogue describes 64 titles printed in 667 volumes, chiefly devoted to Chinese studies, printed at the academy before its closure in 1871, following the Meiji Restoration. Title, number of volumes, author, and year are given. Tetsunosuke Tomita (1835-1916), the prominent banker and governor of Tokyo, found the woodblocks of these 64 publications and issued the present book to record their existence. Fine copy and rare.

Description
Monmouthshire: The Old Stile Press, 2006. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Reddick, Peter. Number III of X special edition copies (total edition 200), quarto size, [60] pp., signed by the artist and author. As explained in the Press's description: "The first 'poem-by-way-of-a-preface' implies that this book is a three-way collaboration of the words (the poet's) and the image (the engraver's) and the space between (the printer/designer). On this occasion, it is not just one art form responding to another. Sometimes a poem responded to a visual image, sometimes vice versa; many pages are more collaborative still, with a sketch from one prompting a draft from the other, worked up to a finished picture and redrafted poem once the printer's hand has set them in their space. Poppies, trees, fire, natural forms all excite the different forms of expression found here. Peter Reddick was, for many years, one of the most highly regarded of British wood engravers and his work has appeared in many Penguin books, those of the Folio Society and Limited Editions Club, New York. He has inspired students not only in Glasgow and Bristol but further afield in Ghana and he was the founder of Spike Island, the lively Bristol Printmaking studio. Philip Gross is a renowned poet and successful writer of thrilling and challenging novels for young people, of plays, science fiction and radio short stories. ' . . he should be recognized as one of England's very best poets . . . for the exuberance of his imagination." ___DESCRIPTION: Original quarter brown cloth and printed paper-covered boards with detail from one of the engravings, tan endpapers, double-spread title page with one illustration, 30 engravings using boxwood and various other surfaces printed directly from the blocks; Spectrum type, Zerkall Halbmatt paper, quarto size (10.5" by 7.75"), [60] pp., limited edition, this number III of X special edition copies from a total edition of 200, signed by the artist and author. The special edition copies are accompanied by a cloth portfolio containing a packet of five engravings (four from the book and one that does not appear in the book), printed by the artist on Japanese paper, titled, numbered and signed by him; and a second packet housing five poems (again, including one not in the book) handwritten on fine paper by the poet and signed by him. All are housed in a fall-down-back case covered with rust-red cloth, small illustration as a paste-down on the front, lined with rust-red suede. ___CONDITION: Fine; crisp, clean, as new and free of prior owner markings; in a like case. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
