Description
Paris: Adrien Delahaye, 1857. FIRST EDITION. Original printed wrappers; interior somewhat foxed, heavier on the preliminary and last leaves. From the library of Louis A. Duhring. First edition of Fournier's first printed treatise, the first of a number of important clinical works on the subject. Fournier (1832-1914), the favorite pupil of Ricord, here sets down his initial research on topics such as the incubation of syphilis, the primary syphilitic induration, the pseudo-chancre of the tertiary stage, the classification of the syphilides according to their chronology, syphilis in women, and the question of syphilitic abortions, etc. "He devoted himself to the study of syphilis to the exclusion of nearly everything else. Fournier dominated French venerology in the last decades of the century as his master had done a generation before, and he was recognized throughout the Western World as an authority second to none on syphilis" (Crissey & Parish, The Dermatology and Syphilology of the Nineteenth Century, p. 221). Extremely rare with no copies located of the present Recherches, only the Étude published the following year.

Description
New York City, 1938. Small folio, 12 x 9 inches, (16) unnumbered pages. Signed boldly by Calloway on the front cover above the leg of the dancer in the illustration. Near Fine.. An illustrated program for the Cotton Club from 1937/1938, with photographs of Cab Calloway, the Nicholas Brothers, and Mae Johnson, in addition to information about the Club’s fifth edition of their Cotton Club Parade (though this is a larger program). This copy documents the Midtown Manhattan iteration of the Cotton Club, which moved from Harlem to Broadway and 48th Street in 1936 after the Harlem location closed following the Harlem riot of 1935. The new venue attempted to reproduce the earlier club’s formula of elaborate revues combining jazz orchestras, chorus lines, and specialty dancers in large-scale stage productions such as the Cotton Club Parade. While the performers remained overwhelmingly African American—including Calloway’s orchestra and many of the dancers—the audience at the club continued to be largely white, reflecting the segregated entertainment culture of the period. This arrangement had long been criticized by Harlem writers and intellectuals; Langston Hughes, writing during the Harlem Renaissance, famously described the Cotton Club as a “Jim Crow club for gangsters and monied whites,”[1] objecting to the racial restrictions placed on patrons even as Black musicians and dancers provided the entertainment. The Midtown Cotton Club continued presenting revues and broadcasts through the late 1930s but ultimately closed in 1940, bringing an end to one of the most famous nightclubs associated with the Harlem Renaissance and the swing era. Not in OCLC, though see 951748496 for a shorter four page program for the fifth edition of the Cotton Club Parade, published in 1938 and held at East Carolina University. Description
Havana, 1896. About very good.. 114pp. 16mo. Original teal cloth. Corners bumped, binding lightly worn and soiled. Contemporary booksellers' stamps on half title, some notations and contemporary ownership ink stamps to text. Lightly toned. A scarce and unusual history of Cuba. Beginning with the year 1800, the author recounts important events in the island's history, listed chronologically by year. The "Primera Epoca" encompasses 1800 to 1868, and takes just eighteen pages before the author moves on to more modern events that shaped the island. The more modern events are noted by individual date within each year, outlining the struggles for separation from Spain and the military conflicts which ensued. Fewer than ten copies in OCLC.

Description
New York, N.Y.: William K. Bell Publications, 1956. Very good. 8 1/8" x 5 3/8". Bound, orange thin card wrappers. Pp. xi, 147. Very good: wrappers lightly worn with some dust soiling; faint evidence of water exposure to upper outer corner of around one third of the leaves. Inscribed by the author on the verso of the title page. This is an energetic and informative work offering business advice and encouragement to African Americans. It was written by a Black New York businessman and author, William K. Bell, and inscribed by him as well. The book conveyed various opportunities for financial success, while stressing that the onus of economic betterment was on the African American himself. The author wrote: "Get it out of your head, Mr. Ne*ro, that your own people are going to spend their money with you because you are a Ne*ro. You must offer them for their money the same things and considerations that other people do. It has been found in a good many cases that the biggest enemy to Ne*ro business is the Ne*ro business man himself." The text covered the role of the church and of fraternal organizations in Black commerce. It also provided guidance on leadership and "what it takes to build a business." There were statistics showing African American economic progress, advice and adages such as "don't let the customer get away" and "laziness is the enemy of human progress." Reasonably well-represented in institutions, a fine advice book for aspiring African American business people inscribed by the author.
