Beautifully bound by Macdonald in full blue levant morocco. Covers decoratively double-ruled and paneled in gilt, with red morocco floral onlays in gilt, spines decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments with similar red morocco floral onlays in gilt, five raised bands, gilt board edges and turn-ins, pastedowns paneled with red morocco and double-ruled in gilt, red silk doublures. Most volumes skilfully and invisibly rebacked, preserving the original spines. A fine set. Sir Richard Francis Burton (1821-1890) gained international fame and respect as an explorer and writer of travel books. First Edition. "Houghton, a Shropshire clergyman, aimed his book at the fisherman rather than the naturalist, and the text (of which there is, unusually, plenty) gives information about recognition, feeding and breeding habits, habitat, bait and so on" (Buchanan, Nature into Art, 168). Alexander Francis Lydon's plates, which were printed by Benjamin Fawcett, show each fish in what is meant to be its natural habitat. For this work, Houghton studied the specimens in the collection of the British Museum. British Fresh-Water Fishes is notable for its incorporation of the naturalistic backgrounds of the fish habitats. The fact that this work has been reprinted in subsequent editions from the 19th century through the 1980s attests to the quality and interest of the descriptions and illustrations, even though taxonomists have since revised some of the classifications. Captions in Cyrillic and Latin. Frontispiece plate (by Sushkin) a little dusty and discolored at the margins; one other plate rather foxed; all others quite clean and unmarred. Boards a bit bowed. The frontispiece plate by P.P. Sushkin shows a lakeside scene with flocks of geese, and bears the caption "At Lake Kayran-ku; Turgay District, in September 1898, from a watercolor made from nature...." As far as we can tell, the lake was located in modern Khazakstan It is followed by 24 plates of geese by the British naturalist F.W. Frohawk.

Light wear from handling, one image with tiny pinholes in all four corners, many of the images signed by Beals in pencil or pen in the lower margin, a few images with manuscript captions and the note "Please return to Mrs. G.D. Smith" on versos, else a Very Good, bright collection. Date of publication based on Tarbox Beals' rubber-stamps on verso of each image, providing her studio address 333 Fourth Avenue in New York, which she occupied from around 1920 to 1926. Splendid collection of action shots taken at the all-girls Camp Nyoda in Oak Ridge, New Jersey. The camp, originally affiliated with the Camp Fire Girls of America, was founded in 1917 by Lee and Glover Smith. Jessie Tarbox Beals' daughter Nanette (b. 1911) was an early attendee, and while her mother had enjoyed national recognition for her news photographs for nearly two decades, she faced constant financial struggles. It is possible that Nanette's place at the camp was in part subsidized by this series of promotional photographs her mother took for the camp. The photographs in this collection range across all facets of camp life, including basketweaving (unfortunately dressed as Native Americans), canoeing, fishing, and shooting. There is also a high level of pageantry at play here, with several photographs capturing at least four different performances including tableaux vivant and an elaborate canoe procession. Only two photographs were taken indoors, a view of the dining hall and a group photograph of a performance in which all the girls were, again, dressed as Native Americans, the only exception dressed as a ballerina. Of particular interest are the photographs of the girls at play, with two action shots of the girls playing basketball on the tennis courts--Tarbox Beals has even managed to capture the moment when the ball goes through the hoop. Notably only two photographs identify the girls by name (none of them Nanette), that of the canoe procession where faces are difficult to make out and that of three girls with boyish haircuts practicing sharpshooting: Dorothy Dodd, Ada Fuller, and Marva Brown. One of the largest photographs, showing two girls triumphantly holding up the fish they have just caught, is sadly uncaptioned. A former school teacher and lifetime dynamo, Jessie Tarbox Beals (1870-1972) gained national recognition for her gumption in documenting the St. Louis World Fair in 1904 where she was interviewed by the city's newspaper The Focus: "If one is the possessor of health and strength, a good news instinct...a fair photographic outfit, and the ability to hustle, which is the most necessary qualification, one can be a news photographer." Indeed, an ability to hustle and bodily strength were recurring themes in this photographer's professional biography. Climbing ladders, balancing on top of bookcases, floating in hot air balloons, all were achieved while lugging about Tarbox Beals' equipment of choice: a 10x8 format camera weighing in at fifty pounds. In the world of women in photography Tarbox Beals was a "first" twice over: In 1902 she became the first woman photographer to work for a newspaper, having been signed on by both the Buffalo Courier and the Buffalo Inquirer. She also taught herself to take photographs at night, gaining the reputation as the first women night photographer. She also anticipated Weegee by decades, taking photographs for which news articles were then manufactured. The present collection showcases her continuing "ability to hustle" in order to get her daughter through the expenses of summer camp.

We hazard an 1890s date based on the handwriting, clippings, and paper. Desserts are the clear focus with recipes for Sponge Cake, Caramel Cake Filling, Mrs. Hesse's Dough Cake, Sunshine Cake, and Austin Cake featured, often with attributions to sources for recipes, all written in a single hand. Pies, puddings, and cookies also make appearances, though just to mix it up, corn griddles, waffles, and two recipes for salad dressing are included. Attributions to recipes, when included, are all to other women, be they cousin Martha, Lizzy, or Mrs. Burroughs or Miller. A quite rich little record of recipe sharing with an impressive commitment to the pastry arts.

Walker (1784-1836) was a police magistrate in England known for his work trying to combat poverty within his community. He began writing a weekly periodical in 1835 called "The Original," which covered a number of topics, but his "papers on health and gastronomy ... were the chief attraction of the work," according to the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. Binding sound. Front hinge cracked but text block remains secure. Sheepskin binding peeling and corners slightly rubbed. Endpages foxed, all other pages clean and unmarked.

Small puncture and some wear to spine of slipcase. A rare history of the Tenrikyo Mission in Hawaii, beginning with the founding of its first church in Honolulu in 1929. Tenrikyo was a new Japanese religion founded in the 19th century in Japan by Nakayama Miki. The present work also includes information on many other churches on the islands, including the Hilo Church, Kauai Church, the Maui Church, and more. The photographic plates contain portraits of some mission members, views of churches, scenes from church life, and more. The text is mostly in Japanese save for a fifteen-page section printing a series of English-language lectures on the Tenrikyo religion by members of the Hawaiian mission. OCLC records just a single physical copy of this rare Japanese-American work, at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

At the end of each chapter is a list of suggestions and problems for pupils. There is not a great deal of information on the author. He wrote a number of books on Illinois history, including a history of Will County.

Chicago, Illinois: International News Photos, 1939. Single photograph measuring 5 x 8 inches with typed caption affixed verso. Some wear; excellent.. A portrait of activist preacher Owen Whitfield (1891–1965), taken during the 1939 Missouri sharecropper protest. The caption reads in part: “Preacher Owen H. Whitfield, of La Forge, MO., negro preacher who is the leader of the sharecroppers in southeast Missouri, in their controversy with their landlord plantation owners. It is reported that more than one thousand seven hundred cotton pickers and their families have been evicted from their homes.” Whitfield was from a sharecropping family; he became a preacher in the 1920s and joined the Southern Tenant Farmers Union in 1936, using his position as a preacher to promote the STFU and advocate for sharecroppers. During the Great Depression, landowning planters replaced sharecroppers with cheaper day laborers, leading to mass evictions. Whitfield, with the STFU, CIO, and NAACP, organized a protest wherein evicted sharecroppers, Black and white, camped alongside highways 60 and 61 in the Missouri bootheel. The protest started on January 10 and was broken up by state police within a few days. Several years later, some of the sharecroppers who protested would receive affordable housing in areas where they could work as day laborers.

A real photo postcard with a photograph of an Asian family relaxing by the side of the road, near what appears to be a 1917 Ford Model T Touring car or similar (the stamp box dates the postcard to 1904–1917). The youngest child wears a pair of driving goggles. At the time, touring by car was a novelty, often involving navigating poor, unpaved roads and pulling over to camp right beside one’s car.

In 1909, Blind Boone (John William Boone) was an established touring pianist and composer whose concert career had already spanned more than two decades. Blind since infancy, he had trained at the Missouri School for the Blind in St. Louis and by this period, with the help of his manager John Lange Jr., he was widely known for combining classical repertoire, spirituals, and syncopated ragtime compositions in formal recital programs. In 1909 he published Blind Boone’s Ragtime Medley No. 2: “Strains from the Flat Branch” and The Last Dream: Waltzes, works which blended ragtime forms and elements of European parlor and concert music. By this time Boone was traveling with his wife and business associate, Eugenia Boone, while the long-established framework of his touring career had been shaped by his manager John Lange Jr., who had directed Boone’s concert operations since 1879 under the name of the Blind Boone Touring Company. Lange, a Columbia, Missouri businessman, handled bookings, transportation, finances, and promotion, adopting the motto “Merit, Not Sympathy, Wins,” which appeared on programs and advertising. Boone’s performances in this period were typically presented in opera houses, churches, and public halls across the United States and Canada. OCLC 43451378, locating four copies.

El Grito was published to highlight scholarship and creative work by Mexican Americans from the United States between 1967 and 1974. Included in this archive are; [1] El Grito: a journal of contemporary Mexican-American thought; vol. II, #2, Winter 1969. Highlighted articles include "The Historical and Intellectual Presence of Mexican-Americans", "The Negro Movement as an Anti-Revolution", and collected narratives and poetry by Chicano writers; and [2] Chicano Drama, El Grito Book Series; Year VII, June-August 1974. The introduction begins with a brief summation of Chicano theatre and it's emphasis on Mayan and Aztec mythology. It's contents include five Chicano dramas written by Alurista, Carlos Morton, and Alfonso C. Hernandez. El Grito was published by Quinto Sol, the first fully independent publishing house to surface from the Chicano movement in the 1960s. The name "Quinto Sol" is Spanish for "Fifth Sun" and it refers to the Aztec myth of creation and destruction. El Grito was the first national academic Chicano literary journal ever published in the U.S. The journal, whose name is Spanish for "the Shout," was "intended to raise awareness at what we could call a pan-Chicano/a nationalistic level". Considered an intellectual and independent critical space, it became a place where Chicano scholars, authors and artists could work to debunk the "culture of poverty" and other negative stereotypes attributed to Mexican Americans in the media at the time. The authors published in El Grito drew attention to the biases in academic realms regarding Mexican-Americans and attempted to rectify these blind spots. The texts became an important resource for those wanting to learn about the newly instituted discipline of Chicano Studies. El Grito also published advertisements geared towards high schools and other university departments to stress the importance of Quinto Sol materials in the classroom. Through the journal El Grito, Quinto Sol played a pivotal role in the process of institutionalizing Chicano culture as a legitimate field of inquiry. Binding is tight and pages are clean aside from the title pages having some pencil markings. Overall very good condition.

A beautiful advertising piece from the artist's late years, most probably given to potential customers at his studio, the photograph depicted one of Rea's award-winning paintings of Loma Alta - one of the highest points of Marin County in the Bay Area - and was subtitled: "Loma Alta at the end of a perfect day. California State Fair Special Award, 1925. All copyrights reserved by Louis E. rea, Artist." Louis Rea (1868-1927) was born in Flint, Michigan and his family moved to Northern California in 1876, to the small town of Lincoln in Placer County. He exhibited a significant artistic talent at a young age and was known for his refusing to paint any buildings in his art, saying that they detracted from the beauty of the nature in his landscapes. His most famous technique was the shadowing of the foreground and showing the high hills of Sonoma and Marin Counties in the background in bright, dramatic colors. Rea died of appendicitis in San Francisco.
