Description
Paris: Gulielmum Le Noir, 1566. First Edition. Quarter Calf. Wood boards. Very Good. Many of the woodcut portraits of French rulers, each slightly more than half of their pages, are beautifully hand-colored, making this an unique copy. The coloring is especially rich in lustrous gold and silver. 12mo. 14.5 by 9 cm. Unpaginated, 160 pages or so. 36, of the 61 portraits, hand-colored. Biographies are short -- some are not even half a page; most are two pages; a few, generally the more recent monarchs, run longer, up to nine pages. Since the monarchs stretch back to the early Middle Ages, when France as we know it didn't exist, many of the portraits are entirely imagined images, and the attire they are wearing is also a-historical. We describe the binding as quarter calf, as it covers the spine but not the corners, but in fact it also covers about a third of the wood boards. Three raised bands. The two initial letter devices also colored -- these are the only such devices in the book. Calf is scuffed but remains attractive. Leaves have some staining and foxing scattered throughout, generally light but sometimes a bit darker or more conspicuous. The binding is tight, and we believe that notwithstanding the issue mentioned about the leaves, few are those who would find the interior disconcerting.

Description
Lancaster, PA: American Physical Society, 1 March 1936. Second series, volume 49, number 5. Very Good. ppl 341-422. Original green wraps. Slight nick at bottom edge of lower wrap, else better than very good. Includes the retort by Einstein and Rosen (originators of speculation on the existence of "worm-holes" in spacetime) to objections made to the general theory of relativity. According to Galina Weinstein: "Between 1935 and 1936, Einstein was occupied with the Schwarzschild solution and the singularity within it while working in Princeton on the unified field theory and with his assistant Nathan Rosen, on the theory of the Einstein-Rosen bridges. He was also occupied with quantum theory. He believed that quantum theory was an incomplete representation of real things. Together with Rosen and Boris Podolsky he invented the EPR paradox. I demonstrate that the two-body problem in general relativity was a heuristic guide in Einstein's and collaborators' 1935 work on the Einstein-Rosen bridge and EPR paradox." Also articles by notable physicists on radioactivity, electron mobility, quantum-mechanical measurement, and so on.

Description
1892. London: William Heinemann, 1892. 8 pp undated ads. Original salmon cloth decorated in brown. First Edition of Kipling's only serious attempt at literary collaboration. A Vermonter, Wolcott Balestier was an American author and publisher's agent in London; in fact in 1890 he and Heinemann had founded the Heinemann & Balestier publishing house in Leipzig (books in English for the Continental market). He had written about the American "Wild West," and Kipling of course had written about India. THE NAULAHKA (a misspelling of "naulakha," which in Hindu means nine lakhs, i.e. 900,000 rupees) is an odd tale that combines these two environments into "A Story of East and West" -- a man from a Western boom-town attempts to get possession of a fabulous jewel in India. In December 1891, six months before this was published, Balestier suddenly died (at age 29) of typhoid fever in Dresden. Kipling had met Wolcott's sister Carrie and just a month after Wolcott died, she became Kipling's wife; the Kiplings built their first home in Vermont and, in memory of her brother, named it "Naulakha" -- spelled correctly. (The newlywed Kiplings lived in Vermont for four years, toward the end of which Kipling wrote CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS about the Massachusetts fishing fleet; but it all came crashing down when Wolcott's brother Beatty was arrested for assaulting Kipling -- there was an altercation after Kipling had created a little garden on land he owned but had allowed Beatty to hay: the Kiplings fled to England.) This is an unusually clean copy, just about fine (a hint of rubbing at the spine ends); such condition is scarce for this book, in view of its soil-prone salmon-colored binding. Richards A66; Stewart 105; Livingston 85.

Description
London: MICHAEL JOSEPH, 1973. Revised Edition. Hardcover. Purple cloth covered boards. Very good, in very good dust wrapper. 206 pages. 22.5 x 14 cm. After a sensible introduction on the service of wine, the vineyards of Europe and the rest of the world are discussed fully but not laboriously. No artificial snobbery is tolerated, and a number of prejudices are disposed of with decisiveness and wit. Illustrated by the fabulous Ronald Searle. Previous owner's signature on the front free end paper. Pages lightly toned. Boards clean. Dust wrapper lightly toned. In protective mylar cover.
