Lady Greene was a prolific Irish children's author whose works emphasized moral life lessons. The present work was originally published in 1870 with the subtitle Buy the Truth and Sell It Not: A Tale for the Young; and it tells the simple and uplifting story of two boys who learn the Christian way toward generosity and goodness. Illustrated for the first time by Arthur Rackham, the present version of the story is brought to life in vivid, Pre-Raphaelite style. Arthur Rackham (1867-1939) is perhaps the most acclaimed and influential illustrators of the Golden Age of Illustration. A prolific artist even from his youth, Rackham got his start as an illustrator working for the Westminster Budget Newspaper (1892). Over the next few years, he took on more and more commissions for children's books, hitting his career high in the first three decades of the twentieth century. Rackham turned his imaginative pen to every classic-from Shakespeare to Dickens to Poe. Riall 51. Latimore and Haskell 21.
