Description
2 p.l., xii, 124, [4] pp. 12mo, cont. blond calf (two corners a tiny bit worn), triple gilt fillet round sides, spine finely gilt with chevrons “à la grotesque,” red morocco lettering piece on spine. Paris: F.A. Didot & De Bure, 1776. First edition of this introduction to precious stones written for collectors and jewelers; according to the author this is the first complete treatise on precious stones. Dutens describes the chief varieties including diamonds, rubies, sapphires, emeralds, etc. He has also provided an interesting table at the end of current prices of diamonds of increasing carats. In the Preface, Dutens reviews the writings on precious stones of earlier authors including Pliny, Theophrastus, Boyle, and Romé de l’Isle. This work is a notable work in typography as well: it is the first book printed by François Ambroise Didot, l’aîné (1730-1804), who promoted technical innovation in printing and papermaking and introduced the new form of typographical measurement, the “point Didot.” We quote from the 1783 catalogue of Mérard de Saint-Just: “Ce petit Traité est le premier Ouvrage sorti des presses de M. Didot l'aîné, où l’on ait aperçu cette supériorité de talents qui l’a mis tout de suite au-dessus de tous ses confrères de France, d’Italie, d’Allemagne et de Hollande, et qui l’associe dès lors à la gloire de Baskerville, et surtout à celle d’Ibarra.”–from André Jammes’ wonderful Les Didots catalogue, no. 73. Dutens (1730-1812), diplomat and man of letters, edited the works of Leibniz (1768), was a fellow of the Royal Society, and was historiographer to the King of England. An uncommonly fine copy. ❧ Sinkankas 1819–“Dutens’ work did provide useful accurate information and received acclaim and wide distribution.”.

Description
Heber, UT: Western Whitewater, 1962. Mimeograph scroll map [18 cm x 1371.5 cm] / [7" x 540"] on paper. Better than very good. First two feet (of this 45 foot map) has seven quarter sized chips to the foot. Highly detailed river runner's guide to floating the Grand from Lee's Ferry to Temple Bar and the Overton Arm of Lake Mead, by river running legend, Les Jones. Map notes all of the major rapids and how to navigate them as well as historic runs through these rapids and some of the mishaps. Also contains mileage and tips for boaters. Leslie A. Jones was born in Montana in 1922. He developed his love for rivers early on living by the Missouri River. It was not unusual for him to be found at that time rowing a boat under the moonlight fishing for catfish. Jones remained in Montana for his professional training as a civil engineer. In 1953, he moved to Salt Lake City. In the same year, Jones rafted the Lodore Canyon of the Green River with his cousins. This raft trip was in conjunction with the Sierra Club's attempt to create awareness about a proposed dam that would have flooded the canyon. It was on the same trip that Jones began to combine his love of river running and civil engineering. A broken oar compelled Jones to develop a self-support single person craft. Over the years, he has made several contributions to canoe and kayak designs. "I'd noticed when I'd run with the Sierra Club the rapids all kind of ran together as a blur, and I couldn't remember the details well enough, and I didn't have any identification points. So I started my scroll maps-I didn't like the wind on the U.S. Geological [Survey] maps, so I started building my scroll maps. "The outline of the maps was taken either from aerial photographs and drawn artfully, or traced directly from the contour maps of the U.S. Geological Survey, putting the river end-to-end, instead of cut up in segments like the USGS did, . . . so I could line the river out on a seven-inch scroll strip and then take it from one end to the other, without having to run off the scroll. . . . And then putting a profile of the river . . . wherever it fit best. . . . We had to put them on paper, for lack of mylar. Then we put them on mylar" - Les Jones "Ride the wilderness whitewaters in reverence before god - with a prayer his strength will be in you." Grand Canyon Bibliography: 10.14.

London: Ridgway, 1863. 58pp, disbound, else Very Good. Walker, the staunchly pro-Union Senator from Mississippi during the 1830's who had also been an advocate of Texan annexation and later became governor of the Kansas Territory, spent much of the War in Europe raising money for the Union cause. Here he shows that Jefferson Davis and his government are "engaged in selling worthless Confederate bonds in this market." DAB says this and his other pamphlets showed, "not very candidly, how slavery, Jefferson Davis, and the repudiation of debts were almost synonymous terms." LCP 10902.

Very Good+ in Very Good+ dj
Description
Garden City NY: Doubleday, Doran & Company, Inc.. Very Good+ in Very Good+ dj. 1936. First Edition. Hardcover. [solid copy, light dust-soiling and minor spotting to top edge, minor bump to bottom rear corner, scar/remnant on front pastedown from mostly-removed bookplate or label, small rubber-stamped bookseller's name at bottom of front pastedown; jacket a bit edgeworn, spine slightly toned, minor paper loss at top of spine, small tear at top front corner]. "A first novel of savage strength" set against a Cape Cod background, this is a tale of a daughter who worships her mother but remains oblivious to the latter's insane jealousy and religious fanaticism, and its destructive effects on the family. The mother is a cranberry-picker's wife whose passionate desperation to maintain her hold on the girl leads her to "poison [her] mind against her father," which inadvertently "drives the child she loves into tragedy and smashes the pattern of her own life." Heavy stuff, this "penetrating study in the darker recesses of human motives" -- makes you kind of wonder about the home life of the author. As one contemporary critic noted, "the average reader likes to be entertained, not horrified. [The characters'] lives are filled with bitterness, hate, suspicion, despair, grinding toil, anger, frustration, and so on." In the words of another critic: "Adept telling alone saves it from being a literary nightmare." Interestingly, the jacket blurb: (a) gives no information whatsoever about the author; (b) omits the rather important fact that the family are immigrants from Finland; and (c) makes no reference to three other family members, two sons and another daughter. The author herself also seems to have been given zilch in the way of personal publicity by the publishers, and "Eve Walters" -- if that really was her name -- was never been heard from again. (All of which makes me even MORE curious about the well from which sprang this very intense novel.) .
