Description
32 fine full-page woodcuts. 42 folding leaves. Large 8vo, orig. blue wrappers (wrappers rather rubbed, minor soiling), modern manuscript label on upper cover, new stitching. [Japan]: from the Japanese colophon on the penultimate leaf: “Nakano Zesui had the woodblocks carved & published this book mid-July 1655.” First edition to be published in Japan, printed in Chinese with Japanese reading marks. Yongming Yanshou (J.: Eimei (or Yomei) Enju, 904-75), was a Chan master who had a profound impact on the development of Buddhism in East Asia. Yanshou was a widely influential proponent of a scripture-based Chan, in opposition to the rhetorical and iconoclastic Chan of the Linji school. He became the first master to teach both Meditation and Pure Land Buddhism, a synthesis that dominated Chinese Buddhism after the Song dynasty. This finely illustrated biography of Yanshou was written by the late Ming monk Dahe. It contains the later notes contributed by Yu Chunxi (jinshi 1583) and Huang Ruheng (1558–1626). Yu Chunxi was a good friend of Zhuhong (1535-1615), and active in the late Ming Buddhist revival. Huang Ruheng, who moved in the same intellectual circles, was a noted calligrapher. This rare work is well illustrated with a series of 32 full-page woodcuts, starting with a “true image” of Yanshou. The remainder of the woodcuts show the major religious events in his life, from his youth to old age. We learn from the final leaf that our edition was copied from the Chinese edition of 1606. Some worming throughout. The woodcuts are largely free of worming at the beginning, but the final eight leaves are more affected. ❧ In WorldCat, the authorship of the copy at Harvard (accession no. 43420760) is given as Daiei.

Description
1941. London: Collins, 1941-1950. [and] London: Werner Shaw, 1995. 134 vols, plus 7 duplicates, mostly slim 4to, each volume has, on average, 48 illustrated pp. and 8 color plates. Decorative printed boards, dust-jackets repeating the boards pattern (and mostly present in this set), generally a very good set entirely complete with the supplementary volumes (and a few duplicates). The Carney bibliography is in original blue cloth and dust-jacket, as new. A complete listing is available on request. § A complete set of this wonderful series, generally with 48 illustrated pages and 8 color plates though some volumes vary. Original decorative boards, some with dust-jackets, This series was begun as an attempt to record all aspects of the British way of life in case the war should irreversibly change it. As a mixture of propaganda and scholastic enterprise, it is surely one of the most amazing products of its kind ever conceived, let alone achieved. The plethora of (now) famous writers and artists who contributed when many (if not most) were still fairly unknown is a tribute to the wisdom and skills of the editors W.J. Turner and Sheila Shannon, and especially the beautiful and brilliant Hilda Matheson, whose relationship with Vita Sackville-West caused Virginia Woolf such intense jealousy. Authors and artists include: Cecil Beaton, John Betjeman, Edmund Blunden, Elizabeth Bowen, Graham Greene, Geoffrey Grigson, David Low, Rose Macaulay, Ngaio Marsh, Bernard Miles, Sean O'Faolain, George Orwell, David Piper, Vita Sackville-West, Edith Sitwell, and exactly a hundred others. Complete sets are rare; Carney (see below) notes that it took him nearly thirty years to assemble his set. Paul Breman writes: "The acceptable face of jingoism, a splendid record of a bygone age, this series was a calculated attempt to boost flagging wartime morale, but it far outgrew its original scope and lived on through the bleak and even more depressing postwar years of seemingly endless rationing. Conceived (by Hilda Matheson, recruited for 'special work' by the Foreign Office in 1939) as a series of monographs, these Collins books add up to a unique picture of life in Britain (when still an Empire-a fact reflected in a series of volumes on the 'colonies') in its varied historical, cultural, sporting, technical, environmental, natural, sociological and political aspects. The authors were mostly in their thirties during the war, few of them yet the household names many have since become. . . . A complete series has 141 volumes, and each volume has, on average, 48 illustrated pages and 8 colour plates (the exceptions to this are the nine "One guinea" volumes, and six little anthologies of English poets, which Dorothy Wellesley, probably by dint of her investment, managed to get incorporated in the fledgling series-"these are now by far the hardest titles to find)." In 1995 Michael Carney published an engaging account of the series (Britain in Pictures: A History and Bibliography) which also includes brief biographies of the many authors.

Description
14 pp. descriptive texts and 92 illustrations in all, including a series of 85 plates, several folding, numbered as I-LXXXIII (incl. XII bis. and XXVIII bis.) ; 5 unnumbered maps, four of them large, folding (Carte géographique de l'île de Chypre, Carte géographique du royaume de Maroc, Carte géographique de l'Afrique septentrionale, Carte géographique de la côte d'Arabie, Carte routière du voyage d'Ali Bey du Caire à Constantinople) ; the frontispiece portrait of Badia y Leblich as Ali Bey El Abbassi ; and one additional unidentified architectural drawing of a mosque in profile. Oblong folio. Good to very good overall ; usual degree of foxing and offsetting throughout ; a few closed tears at the margins, esp. of the large folding plates. Original boards rubbed at the extremities and repaired at the corners. Rebacked in modern leather, preserving much of the original spine. Endpapers are new. [1297] A handsome and intact first-edition copy of the rare Atlas, often pillaged for its impressive maps and attractive views. Badia y Leblich was a Spanish traveller and spy who disguised himself as an Arab diplomat under the name of Ali Bey El Abbassi [Arabic: علي باي العباسي‎]. It is thought by modern historians that he acted as an agent of the Spanish government, who sought to extend their influence in the region. In 1803, he departed for Tangier and travelled through North Africa to Egypt, then continued on to Cyprus. He reached Mecca in early1807, then returned to Spain via Jerusalem, Damascus and Constantinople the same year. As a supporter of Joseph-Napoléon Bonaparte, Badia y Leblich fled to France after Napoleonic forces in Spain were defeated in 1813, leading to the first publication of his travel memoirs in Paris. After the celebrated success of his Voyages, he embarked on a second trip to the Near East under the pseudonym "Ali Othman," initially returning to Syria where his ruse was discovered leading to his 1818 death in Aleppo. Much mystery and controversary still surrounds Badía y Leblich's legacy

London: Hodgson & Co.,, 1835. Exceptionally Scarce Valentine Caricature by George and Robert Cruikshank Obadiah "I do confess I long have loved thee, And hope thou hast conceived the like for me;" Rachael "Yea, if thou wishest to take me to wife, I'll be thy partner thro' this weary life;" CRUIKSHANK, George & Robert. The Lovers' Panorama; or Cupid's Vagaries on St. Valentine's Day. London: Hodgson & Co., [1835]. Second Issue with changed title, otherwise identical. No date was assigned to either issue. Sixteenmo (5 3/4 x 3 3/8 inches; 146 x 86 mm.). 24 pp. Hand colored engraved vignette title-page and eleven hand colored vignettes in the text. Title-page and first two leaves slightly soiled at fore-margin, otherwise near fine. Nineteenth century burgundy paper wrappers, marbled endpapers over the original? plain wrappers. Housed in a fleece-lined, three-quarter red morocco clamshell case. According to Cohn the hand-colored engraving on the title-page is by George and Robert Cruikshank, the last two are by George Cruikshank, and the other nine are by Robert Cruikshank. OCLC locates only three copies of this issue in libraries and institutions worldwide: Yale University Library (CT., USA), McGill University Library (Montreal, Canada), and the British Library (London, UK). OCLC locates just two copies of the first issue: Trinity College Library (CT, USA), and Harvard University (MA, USA). The only copy of the first issue that we have been able to trace was the Salomons copy which appeared at auction in 1991. "This item is a second issue of "Cupid's Vagaries" (No. 216) with identical plates. It should also be noted that the price has been raised from sixpence to a shilling." (Cohn, p.151). It was first published [1822] as "Cupid's Vagaries, or the Lover's Panorama on St. Valentine's Day. (see also No. 510, "The Lovers' Panorama," which is the same work, another edition.). (Cohn, p. 72). We have never seen this title before - in either first or second issue... and there was no example in the famous Cruikshank collection of Dr. Fluhmann. (Benoit Forgeot catalog 2009). Cohn, 510.

Description
Basel: [Hieronymus] Froben, 1556. First Edition of this Latin Translation. 343 x 235 mm. (13 1/2 x 9 1/4"). 4 p.l., 730, 142, [2] (blank) pp., [12] leaves. Translated from the Greek by Petrus Nannius and Wolfgang Musculus. Contemporary blind-stamped pigskin over bevelled wooden boards by Balthasar Wernher of Lauingen, covers framed by palmette rolls and a roll signed with the initials B. W. that features half-figures of Christ as Salvator Mundi, St. Paul, St. John the Baptist, and King David, central panel of upper cover with vertical palmette rolls, the blank frame around it with the letters "M G" above the panel (separated by turnip tool), the date 1557 below the panel, central panel on the lower cover with the same tooling, but surrounded by a frame with a roll of medallions of the Reformers, raised bands, ink lettering to a couple of panels, two original brass catches and catchplates (one catchplate defective). Printer's woodcut device to title page and final page, numerous decorative woodcut initials. Title page with three early ink owner inscriptions; occasional early ink marginalia and underlining. VD16 A 3980; Adams A-2083; Hoffmann I, 415. For the binding: Haebler I, 475, 3; EBDB roll r003786 and workshop w004477. Binding somewhat soiled and chafed, pigskin at one corner rubbed away, one-inch circular hole on back board (a contemporary issue, with tooling impressed on the wood beneath), isolated minor marginal stains or mild foxing, other trivial imperfections, but an extremely pleasing copy, very fresh internally, with excellent margins, in a completely satisfying unrestored contemporary binding. This collected edition of the writings of the Church Father and leading advocate of the doctrine of the Trinity comes in a lovely binding by a known German workshop. The Einbanddatenbank ("Bookbinding Database," or EBDB) of the German Research Foundation attributes the Salvator Mundi/St. Paul/King David/John the Baptist roll to Lauingen binder Balthazar Wernher (ca. 1525-74/75), whose initials appear in the panel featuring Christ. His workshop was active ca. 1555-75; the date on our binding indicates it was produced near the beginning of his career. One of the four great Eastern Doctors of the Church and the Patriarch of Alexandria, St. Athanasius (ca. 297 - 373) led the fight against the Arian doctrine, which held that Christ was a creation of God the Father rather than consubstantial with Him. Athansius’ writings on the Incarnation and the Trinity, which make up most of the text here, were enormously influential. According to Catholic historian Cornelius Clifford, "Athanasius was the greatest champion of Catholic belief on the subject of the Incarnation that the Church has ever known and in his lifetime earned the characteristic title of 'Father of Orthodoxy', by which he has been distinguished ever since." The English theologian (and Cardinal) John Henry Newman declared Athanasius a "principal instrument, after the Apostles, by which the sacred truths of Christianity have been conveyed and secured to the world." This translation of his writings was one of the final works by the Dutch humanist Petrus Nannius (Pieter Nannick, 1496-1557), a contemporary of Erasmus. The printer here was Hieronymus Froben, who took over the family business from his father Johann Froben (1460-1527), a central figure in the printing history of the 15th and early 16th centuries who played a key role both in the intellectual ferment of the northern Renaissance and the theological turmoil of the Reformation. Our substantial large folio binding, with its thick boards and four sets of muscular double bands, provides an appropriate reflection of the weightiness of the works it contains..

Description
Lausanne, Switzerland: General Dynamics, Lith. R. Marsens, 1955. Very good. Light dust soiling, a couple short closed tears.. An exceptional poster designed by Erik Nitsche (1908-1998), while working as art director for the engineering firm General Dynamics in 1955. It is part of the "Atoms for Peace" poster series, and was exhibited by the firm at the 1955 International Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy in Geneva, Switzerland. What makes the series so impactful-- aside from their stunning use of color, typography, and image-- is the coherent message Nitsche has woven throughout the pieces: that atomic energy can be used for peace and modern innovation among nations, rather than destruction and discord sown by the advent of Oppenheimer's atomic bomb. The posters each feature a different minimal, yet nuanced expression of modern science and innovation, with the phrase "Atoms for Peace" in different languages including French, Hindi, English, Spanish, German, Italian, and Arabic. Nitsche, Erik. "Nuclear Fusion". Lausanne: General Dynamics, Lith. R. Marsens, 1955. Lithographed poster measuring approx. 50" by 35". Minimalist design representing nuclear fusion using arrows and blocks of color, with English phrase "exploring the universe" at head.

Description
Mexico City, 1807. Very good.. Letterpress broadside illustrated with large engraving, 12 x 8.25 inches. Minor wear and foxing, engraving printed slightly off register. An evocative and rare Mexican broadside relating the story of Italian Jesuit Francesco de Geronimo (1642-1716). The portrait was executed by Francisco Gordillo, also the chief assayer of the Mexico City mint. This broadside was produced the year following Francesco's beatification in 1806; he was later canonized as a saint in 1839. This "Very Light Sketch of the Life of Francisco" includes a biographical history of Geronimo, as well as a physical description and information on his beatification and burial. "St. Francis wanted to be sent to preach in the Far East but the Jesuit authorities wanted him to stay in Naples, which was the centre of his apostolic labours. He worked through the 'Oratorio delle Missioni,' an organization of working men which functioned as a sickness benefit and funeral society. His preaching was famous: sometimes he would bring a skull to the pulpit, at others scourge his bare shoulders with an iron chain until they bled. He established hostels for reformed prostitutes and their children. His beatification, postponed by the suppression of the Jesuit order, finally took place in 1806, and his canonisation in 1839" - New Catholic Encyclopedia. Rare at auction, and with only five copies in OCLC, at the California State Library, Boston College, University of Pennsylvania, the JCB (Mathes copy), and the Wellcome Library.

Description
London: John Murray, 1824. Second Edition. Complete with half title, large folding frontispiece map, and 3 additional large folding plates. Half calf and marbled boards, spine and extremities rubbed; lightly foxed on endpapers, text somewhat toned. Overall, a good copy from the library of Edwin C. Jellett (1860-1929), an American author well known for his various books about Germantown, Pennsyvania, with his book-label on the paste-down. Second edition (as stated on the title page) of Franklin’s harrowing 5,500 mile expedition to the North that resulted in starvation, cannibalism, and murder. Tasked with charting the geography from the mouth of the Coppermine River to the far east of North America, Franklin’s journey was doomed from the start. As a result of poor planning, slow progress, and bad luck, the expedition was fraught with disaster: supplies were not readily available, winter came early, and food was so scarce that one of the crew eventually turned to murder and cannibalism as a result of the miserable, cold conditions. A total of nine men died due to exposure, starvation, or at the hand of their one deranged companion. Franklin (1786-1847) was a noted naval office, explorer, and author, most famous for his expeditions charting the geography and latitude and longitude of the Arctic Circle. He took part in multiple historic voyages and naval battles, including the Battle of Copenhagen (1801), a failed expedition to circumnavigate Australia (1801), and the Battle of Trafalgar (1805) aboard the HMS Bellerophon. Franklin took part in several voyages in search of the Northwest Passage, and ultimately went missing during his journey of 1845 with the rest of his crew dying of starvation and disease.
