Description
Lithographed title & 80 printed ruled leaves, each written on one side in a neat & legible hand. Folio (380 x 240 mm.), orig. half calf (covers somewhat worn & rubbed, upper hinge cracked but strong), leather lettering label on upper cover, a.e.g. “Ardgowan: 1849.” The Shaw-Stewart family has been one of the most important in Renfrewshire since the 15th century. The lands of Ardgowan, set on the south shores of the Firth of Clyde, were given to John Stewart by his father King Robert III of Scotland in 1403 and the estate has been passed down from father to son or uncle to nephew to the present day. Sir Michael R. Shaw-Stewart (1826-1903), was M.P. for and Lord Lieutenant of Renfrewshire and chairman of the County Council. He inherited an estate of about 26,400 acres. Ardgowan House — “the house of the smith” — was built between 1798 and 1801 for Sir John Shaw Stewart, the 4th Baronet. The house was designed by William Cairncross who was Robert Adam’s assistant when he designed and built Culzean Castle. Culzean had just been completed and greatly influenced the original design of Ardgowan House. Along with a magnificent house, Shaw-Stewart also inherited a fine library, here detailed. It is arranged by shelf-mark with title and author, format, place of publication, and date. Approximately 2000 titles are listed and, quite interestingly, about 80 percent were printed before 1800 (including a good number of 16th-century books). There are many continental imprints. Fine condition.

Description
San Francisco: The Arion Press, 2013. Hardcover. New. Lucy Gray. 9-3/4 by 7 inches, with 180 numbered pages plus twenty unnumbered pages for the photographs. The paper is Italian mouldmade Magnani Velata, in two weights, lighter for the text and heavier for photographs which are tipped into die-stamped recesses. The text and photograph captions were printed by letterpress from Monotype Bodoni Book. The photographs were printed in duotone over a metallic silver ground, overlaid with varnish. The binding is full cloth, in a chartreuse color, over boards with titling and the image of a rising cloud of locusts on the cover. The book is presented in a cloth and paper covered slipcase. The edition is limited to four hundred numbered copies for sale. All copies are signed by the photographer. When Nathanael West died, in a car crash that also killed his wife Eileen, on December 22, 1940, he was not a well-known author. In 1939 his novel "The Day of the Locust" was published. F. Scott Fitzgerald, who died the day before the Wests, had written: "The Day of the Locust has scenes of extraordinary power. Especially I was impressed by the pathological crowd at the premiere, the character and handling of the aspirant actress, and the uncanny almost medieval feeling of some of his Hollywood background set off by those vividly drawn grotesques." Despite this appreciation, it took years for the book to become recognized as a modern American classic and for critics to agree that "The Day of the Locust" is the best novel ever written about Hollywood. The novel is pivotal in literary history. It is by turns surreal, revealing of the shams of the motion-picture business, seedy, sinister, macabre, doped-up, sexy, funny, and tragic. As David Thomson states in his introduction: "Nathanael West was one of the first writers to feel that disappointment in America, and to relate it to the false promises, the shine of advertising, and the cult of being good-looking and happy, that had come with the movies. . . . This is the classic American dream slipping over into nightmare; it is the locusts eclipsing the sunlight". The introductory essay by the distinguished film critic and historian David Thomson elucidates the novel and its relationship to Hollywood and the movies in the Golden Age of the late thirties, its importance to American fiction, and its continuing relevance today. Without giving too much away, it provides the reader with an outline of the story and a guide to an appreciation of its broad and subtle effects. The twenty photographs are done in the manner of movie stills, as if taken at night. Discrete captions below the photographs identify the subjects. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Description
[Popayan, 1853. Good.. Broadside, approximately 12.5 x 8.5 inches. Top edge eaten away, but not affecting text. Light tanning. Scarce broadside from the provincial legislature of Popayan to the people of southwestern Colombia, transmitting its hope that that the new constitution will end "tantos años de contiendas sangrientas, que solo han producido la miseria i el discontento." It concludes by stating that "De oriente á occidente i de norte á sur no se oiga mas que una voz; y que los ecos respondan á los ecos, en nuestros profundos valles i sobre las vumbres de nuestros volcanes, con tanta armonía como la belleza de nuestro horizonte, i con tan inponente voz como el sonoro i retumbante trueno que nos recuerda al Dios que aquí no colocó: PAZ! UNION! FRATERNIDAD!" Not in OCLC.

Description
Newark: University of Delaware Press, (1986). Octavo, black cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, 167 pp. Fine in a Near-Fine dust jacket with light rubbing to edges. From dust jacket: Just outside the capital city of Hattusa, about one hundred miles east of the modern Turkish capital, Ankara, the Hittites of the middle and late Bronze Age created their largest surviving sanctuary. Within the group of huge, outcropping rocks known as Yazilikaya, this imperial chapel provided for the worship of numerous deities who were largely apotheoses of elements and forces of nature. In the mid-thirteenth century B.C., when Hittite great kings restructured their pantheon, they also ordered the sculptured processions of deities that organize and direct the spaces within the sanctuary. About ninety figures, in two separate chambers, still survive after some thirty-five centuries, preserving evidence of the aspirations and methods of the patrons and their artists. This book, the only monograph on the subject in English, is the first to prsent a stylistic study and establish a relative chronology for all the reliefs of Yazilikaya.

Description
2005. Bristol, Roger P. Index of Printers, Publishers, And Booksellers Indicated by Charles Evans in His American Bibliography. Bibliographical Society of the Univ. of Virginia, 1961. Reprinted Mansfield Centre, Conn.: Martino Publishing, 2005. iv, 171 pp. Cloth hardcover. New. $10. * This useful bibliography is a tool for use in conjunction with Evans, American Bibliography. Bristol has provided an index of printers, publishers, and booksellers to help navigate Evans when author-title information is not clear, or not properly transcribed. Bristol suggests that Evans made many attributions of author, publisher, and place of publication which have been found to be poor hunches. The index is an attempt to correct some of these errors. Names of printers and publishers are brought together under place, with no attempt to establish relationships or to differentiate between the individuals of the same name. Bristol was involved in updating Evans even further through supplements and indexes intended to make the information provided in Evans more accurate and accessible. Besterman 5196.
