Description
1886. Thibaut, L[ouis] A[rthur]. General Index to the Laws of Mauritius in Force on 1st January 1886. Consisting of Imperial Statutes, Treaties, Royal Orders in Council, Codes, Ordinances, Proclamations and Government Notices. Mauritius: Printed at the Mercantile Record Company, 1886. iii, 139 pp. Quarto (10-1/2" x 8"). Stab-stitched pamphlet, bound into contemporary quarter cloth over marbled boards. Moderate shelfwear, about one inch of material lacking from fore-edges. A few minor chips and tears to fore-edges of a few leaves, internally clean. A scarce item. $150. * First edition. "Though our Legislature has endeavoured to codify a certain number of our Ordinances, whenever a favourable opportunity has presented itself, and through the work of my predecessor was a sort of Ariadne's clue in the maze of our Local Ordinances and of the French Civil and Penal Codes, English Statutes, Bankruptcy Laws, Orders in Council, International Laws and Treaties, etc. applicable to Mauritius, several years have elapsed since his last publication, and the difficulties, once overcome, have in a great measure, again cropped up. I have, therefore, considered that the preparation of a General Index was very desirable at the present time.": Preface [iii]. OCLC locates 1 copy. "The opera is more important for its mise en scène than for its music. The descent of the fairy-sisters to the lake is a vehicle for elaborate stage effects and ballet sequences. That scene and a madness-dream sequence in Act 4 reflect the strong influence that the convent scene from Meyerbeer's Robert le diable continued to wield at the Opéra. Though the opera had only 30 performances, its overture, one of Auber's best, remained popular in France throughout the 19th century." Laurie Shulman in Grove Music Online. The complete set of 18 numbers was issued in 1839 (Schneider p. 995). Together with: A group of 6 (of 21) separately-published numbers from Auber's Le Domino Noir Opéra Comique en trois actes Paroles de E. Scribe. [Piano-vocal score]. Prix: 2f. 50c. 3 pp. No. 16 bis. Cantique chanté par Mme. Damoreau Cinti. Prix: 2f. 50c. 3 pp. Engraved. Moderately foxed. First performed in Paris at the Opéra Comique (Salle Bourse) on 2 December 1837, Le domino noir was Auber's most successful opéra comique in Paris, with over 1200 performances by 1909. Schneider p. 906. Auber was the foremost composer of opéra comique in nineteenth-century France. His operas enjoyed great success not only in his native France but also in Germany, Denmark, and England. In addition to his activities as a composer, Auber was for a time the director of the Paris Conservatoire.
