Description
London: Bernard Lintott, 1709. Full Description: SHAKESPEARE, William. A Collection of Poems, Viz. I. Venus and Adonis. II. The Rape of Lucrece. III. The Passionate Pilgrim. IV. Sonnets to Sundry Notes of Musick. London: Bernard Lintott, [1709]. First edition, first issue of the second collection of "Poems" (the first being 1640) and the first to include "Venus and Adonis" and "The Rape of Lucrece." One small octavo volumes (6 3/4 x 4 inches; 170 x 103 mm). [4], [1]-155, [1, blank] pp. With four divided title-pages dated respectively 1630, 1632, 1599 and 1599 and "Price bound One Shilling Six-pence" on main title-page. With woodcut vignettes with tree motif on part-titles and woodcut initials. Full contemporary speckled sheep, rebacked to style. Boards ruled in blind. Spine lettered in gilt. Corners renewed. Some nearly invisible professional repairs to bottom blank margin throughout, never affecting text. Two previous owner's bookplates on front pastedown and front free endpaper. A small ownership stamp on front pastedown. Overall a very good copy. Chemised and housed in a quarter red morocco slipcase. Although this is the "second collected edition" of poems, after the Benson 1640 edition, Benson excluded the long poems Venus and Adonis and the Rape of Lucree which are included in the present edition. This present first issue with the early dates of 1630, 1632, 1599 and 1599 on the four part titles can be distinguished from the second issue which has the date 1609 on all four of the part titles. A second volume was printed later. Jaggard only knew of the first volume of this first issue, stating that the two-volume issue appeared in 1710 with the early dates given on the part-titles revised to 1709 (Jaggard's error for 1609). Ford gives a more detailed account of the publication: beginning with the initial printing of the first volume only; followed 'shortly after' by the addition of the second volume with a general title; followed by a publication of both volumes with the subtitle imprints revised to 'Printed in the year 1609'. The Lintott edition was evidently an opportunistic enterprise occasioned by the publication of Rowe's edition of Shakespeare's plays by Tonson in 1709. Tonson had rights only to the Fourth Folio plays, and Lintott evidently responded to demand for a new edition of the poems, as did the printer Curll, whose 1710 edition of the poems is occasionally found making a supplementary volume to Rowe's edition. While Curll's one-volume edition of the poems came to be seen as the natural companion to the Rowe plays, Lintott's edition takes primacy. Curll's version used the Benson version for his reprinting, making the Lintott edition more true to the original and thus more desirable. Ford, pp 37-39. Jaggard, p. 434. HBS 69083. $22,500.

Description
27/06/1865. The letter had to pass through US government screeners: ""If it be your duty to read the letter, I certainly have no objection.""A search of public sale records going back over 40 years fails to turn up any other letter of Greeley on the Davis matter, nor have we seen one.At the end of the Civil War, Jefferson Davis was arrested and imprisoned at Fortress Monroe, on the coast of Virginia. He was placed in irons for three days. Davis was indicted for treason a year later. While in prison, Davis arranged to sell his Mississippi estate to one of his former slaves. After two years of imprisonment, he was released on bail of $100,000 which was posted by prominent citizens of both Northern and Southern states, including Horace Greeley, Cornelius Vanderbilt and Gerrit Smith.During and after the Civil War, Greeley's political course was highly controversial. His reluctance to support Lincoln's renomination in 1864 lost him some popular support, as did his premature efforts to bring about an armistice and peace negotiations. After the war, he joined the Congressional Radicals in supporting equality for the freedmen. The Tribune also advocated the impeachment of President Andrew Johnson. At the same time, Greeley favored measures to restore relations with the South. In 1867, he recommended Jefferson Davis’s release from prison, and he signed Davis's bail bond.Varina Davis, wife of the Confederate president, saw in Greeley a friend once the war had ended. Greeley received a letter from her dated June 22, 1865, written at Savannah, Ga., where she and her family were detained under a sort of military restraint. The conspicuous charge against Mr. Davis was made by the Bureau of Military Justice, of being accessory to the assassination of President Lincoln. The letter implored Greeley to insist upon a speedy trial of her husband upon that charge, and upon all other supposed cruelties that were alleged he had inflicted. A public trial was prayed, that the accusations might be publicly met, and her husband vindicated. To this letter Greeley answered Mrs. Davis, and directed it to the care of General Birge at Savannah. The morning of the next day Greeley went to an attorney, saying that he could not believe the charge against Davis true. Greeley asked Shea to become professionally interested in behalf of Davis. This is the very letter Greeley wrote Mrs. Davis and directed to Birge. Autograph letter signed, on his The Tribune letterhead, New York, June 27, 1865, to General. “I enclose a letter to Mrs. Varina Davis, wife of Jefferson Davis, in reply to one just received from her. I do not [foresee] that you will wish to read it, but not knowing what will be your orders, I deem it proper to do so, and to say that if it be your duty to read the letter, I certainly have no objection. Mrs. D. seems to be laboring [under] distressing apprehension which it is the object of my letter to remove.”A search of public sale records going back over 40 years fails to turn up any other letter of Greeley on the Davis matter, nor have we seen one. When pressed to explain why he was helping Davis, Greeley said he was being denied a timely trial, and besides, the nation needed to heal from its wounds. Greeley was, predictably, the most irascible, telling the infuriated New York Union League Club: ""Gentlemen,...I arraign you as narrow-minded blockheads, who would like to be useful to a great and good cause, but don’t know how. Your attempt to base a great, enduring party on the hate and wrath necessarily engendered by a bloody civil war, is as though you should plant a colony on an iceberg which had somehow drifted into a tropical ocean.”

It was famously removed from high school libraries in New York and became the subject of a 1982 supreme court case. Morris (b. 1928) is a zoologist, surrealist painter, and author of prominent works in sociobiology. New York: McGraw-Hill Book Company, 1969. Yellow boards with black cloth and gilt title on spine, dustjacket unclipped with slight rubbing to corners, book plate of Michael Overcash; signed “Best wishes from Demond Morris” on title page. A clean copy. Signed first American edition, second printing as stated. Following the fame of Morris’ first book, he continues down the path of studying humans and “scrutinizes the society the naked ape has created for himself and compares civilized man with his captive counterpart…It remains to be seen if man will turn his human zoo into a magnificent human game-park or into a gigantic lunatic asylum reminiscent of the cramped animal menageries of the last century.” Morris (b. 1928) is a zoologist, surrealist painter, and author of prominent works in sociobiology. Description
London: Robert Clavel, 1680. Hardcover. Very Good. Hardcover. A rather scarce book with an interesting history. Edmund Borlase (1620-1682) was an Anglo-Irish historian and physician. In 1676, Borlase published at London an octavo volume of 284 pages, with the following title: The Reduction of Ireland to the Crown of England; with the Governours since the Conquest by King Henry II, anno 1172 ; with some passages in their government. A brief account of the Rebellion, anno Dom. 1641. Also, the original of the Universitie of Dublin, and the Colledge of Physicians. The work was mainly a compilation from printed books, and terminated at the year 1672. The compilation of a history of affairs in Ireland from 1641 to 1662 was undertaken by Borlase chiefly with the object of demonstrating that the administrators of the English government there had not acted adversely to the royal interests nor unjustly towards Irish Catholics. For the purposes of his work, Borlase obtained a copy of an unpublished treatise on Irish affairs by Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon. This he unskillfully altered and interpolated, to make it accord with his views. Borlase's work, after expurgation by Sir Roger L'Estrange, was published at London in 1680: 'The History of the execrable Irish Rebellion, trac'd from many preceding acts to the grand eruption, the 23 of October, 1641, and thence pursued to the Act of Settlement, 1662.' The publication attracted little attention, owing to the defective style and absence of the author's name.[Wikipedia]. Folio in contemporary full brown rebacked leather. Binding is scraped, bumped, rubbed. Front hinge cracked but text block is tight. Interior pages are generally very good, with aging and some browning to margins. Includes the fold out chart showing the cost of the rebellion. Library stamp for the Washburn library in Madison WI stamped on front pastedown and title page but no other ex-library signs. 327 pages plus 138 pages of appendixes plus index. IRELAND/041521.

Whom to Marry and How to get Married! or, The Adventures of a Lady in Search of a Good Husband. Edited by the brothers Mayhew. Illustrated by George Cruikshank. London, David Bogue, [1848]. First edition. Crown octavo (7 1/8 x 4 7/8 inches; 182 x 124 mm.). [viii], [1]-271, 1, blank] pp. Vignette glyphograph title-page. Twelve etched plates including frontispiece. Partially uncut, a few plates with light marginal foxing. Bound by Morrell ca. 1920 in full tan calf, covers with triple-rule borders, spine with five raised bands elaborately decorated in gilt in compartments, red and brown morocco labels lettered in gilt, decorative gilt board edges and turn-ins, top edge gilt, others uncut. A fine example, handsomely bound. First issued in six parts, with yellow wrappers (November 1847 to April 1848... (Cohn, p.160). The Mayhew brothers Henry & Augustus, were both heavily involved in the production of Victorian satire; Henry, the elder, was in fact one of the founders of Punch magazine. That same style of sharp mockery shines through in the present work. The book is set in ten 'Offers' (chapters) and would appear to contain warnings about men to avoid when searching for a husband. "This was a lucky escape as a poor confiding girl ever had. If I had only married the handsome deceitful monster, I do verily believe I should have been reduced to the disgraceful state of having to darn my own clothes, or, what is much worse, having to nurse and take care of my own children..." (p. 145). Henry Mayhew (1812-1887) was an English journalist, playwright, and advocate of reform. He was one of the co-founders of the satirical magazine Punch in 1841, and was the magazine's joint editor, with Mark Lemon, in its early days. He is also known for his work as a social researcher, publishing an extensive series of newspaper articles in the Morning Chronicle that was later compiled into the book series London Labour and the London Poor (1861), a groundbreaking and influential survey of the city's poor. Augustus Septimus Mayhew (1826-1875) was an English journalist and author. He wrote in collaboration with his brother Henry such works as The Greatest Plague of Life, or the Adventures of a Lady in Search of a Good Servant (1847) and Whom to Marry and How to get Married! or, The Adventures of a Lady in Search of a Good Husband (1848), both illustrated by George Cruikshank. Cohn, 545; Patten II, p.268.

Description
[Philadelphia: A.M.E. Book Concern], 1928. Very good.. 104pp., plus four plates. Original blue cloth, gilt titles on front cover. Some rubbing to cloth and titles, minor edge wear, spine end a bit scuffed. Ownership ink inscription on front pastedown, ownership initials on fore-edge. Internally clean. Scarce in any condition. The scarce second edition of Bishop William Henry Heard's autobiography, after the first of 1924. Bishop Heard was born into slavery in a log cabin on the plantation of Thomas Jones in Elbert County, Georgia on June 25, 1850. His mother was a farm hand on the plantation; Heard refers to his mother by the pejorative term given to "a woman who had children regularly...a 'breeder.'" Bishop Heard describes his life in Georgia, "the first and second times" he was "sold," his education at church, his freedom after the conclusion of the Civil War (when he was "but fifteen years of age"), his life in politics, his travels, his experiences in the ministry, and more. Bishop Heard dedicates the present work to "the self-made men in the ministry of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, who have, and are giving their lives to the Sacred Cause of preaching the Gospel and advancing the Church." He also begins his Foreword with the hope that "Those who may read this little booklet, The Autobiography of my life...may be benefitted and encouraged, especially the young men and women of our Race." With an introduction by Rev. H.H. Cooper, the Director of the A.M.E. Church Survey, and published by the A.M.E. Book Concern, an African-American publishing house in Philadelphia. The text concludes with a poem by Ephraim D. Tyler of Shreveport, Louisiana entitled, "The Life of William H. Heard." The four plates in the work feature the "Log Hut" in Georgia in which Heard was born, Bishop Heard himself, a drawing of his mother plowing the fields in 1850, and a photograph of his residence, Greystone Terrace. A highly-readable autobiography of a noted African American minister from Georgia.

Paradise, CA: VonuLife, 1973. First edition. 122 pp. [printed 4 pp. to one sheet], offset printed on newsprint. Near Fine, toned with age as is typical, tiny horizontal tear to p. 3, but otherwise in great shape. Rare. A comprehensive issue of 1970s 'zine about dropping out of society, going back to the land, and living a "voluntarily life" according to libertarian/anarchist principles. This particular issue contains contributions by "Rayo," likely a pseudonym of a survivalist and prolific fanzine contributor named Paul Doerr, whom author Jarett Kobek identified as the infamous Zodiac Killer in the 2022 book How to Find Zodiac, largely by examining Doerr's writings and movements during the Zodiac Killer's periods of activity. The book made a quite a splash in the small but active internet communities where such topics are hotly debated and even managed to make news in The Guardian and other outlets. This issue features a lot of Rayo's articles including "16 'Ways to Live Free,' A Critical Evaluation," "40 by 8 Feet of Shelter for $30 and One Day," "Warmth without Fire: Complete Plans for $55 Foam Hut," and more.
