26/11/1932. Shortly after the 1932 election, Walter Carter of Cleveland sent a request to former President Coolidge for a signed photograph. Though he had no photograph to send, Coolidge responded with a handwritten letter.Autograph letter signed, on his letterhead, Northampton, Mass., November 26, 1932, to Walter Carter in Cleveland. “Please accept my thanks for your note with the interesting drawing. I am not able to provide photographs for general distribution, and not being skilled in making pictures, I can only respond with an autograph letter.”ALSs of Coolidge are uncommon, this being the only one we have had in some years.

Description
Dublin, Printed, London:: Reprinted for T. Cooper, 1736. Book. Folio, disbound. Pp. 11, (1, blank); wanting the half-title. Lightly browned and dusty, several marginal tears. First edition. Bounce was Pope's Great Dane; Fop belonged to Mrs. Howard. While authorship of the poem has been debated, "it is generally agreed that the original idea was Swift's, but that the writing is largely by Pope." - Foxon B326. The imprint is facetious, and the subsequent Dublin edition was in fact a reprint. A moderately worn copy of a very scarce title. Teerinck 996..

Description
1905. A cover letter from Lombroso, who is sending a new edition of his book Le crime. Causes et remèdes (first published in 1899). Allow me to remember the beautiful moments we spent together. I am sending you the new edition of my book Crime: a book against crime and a little against my opponents who have claimed that I forgot the economic and social causes of crime, causes that very much preoccupy me. My sincere regards to your dear wife and you George. Signed to your name that I send the book. One of Lombroso’s rarest works, in Le crime he presents his theory of socio-economic factors as a cause of crime. The work is said to be the “ideologically expanded version” of his greatest book, L'Uomo delinquente. It focuses on the etiology of crime, using statistics as well as his own medical research to trace the origins of the criminal mind to factors such as geography and climate, race, economics, religion, and ages of parents. An entire section is devoted to the effects of heredity, including family histories of psychiatric problems, epilepsy and alcoholism. The illustrations depict comparisons of “normal” man to varying degrees of “criminal” types. Statistical charts contain every known and unknown fact that might touch on a criminal's background, and the appendix outlines the progress of anthropology and sociology in the criminal justice system up to the time. Lombroso letters are quite rare on the market.

Description
[Washington, D.C.], 1865. Very good, two repaired tears along bottom edge, light soiling and ink staining, contents clean.. 1 sheet. 8 x 10 inches. Unsigned and undated notification of the passage of Senator Henry Wilson's first civil rights bill of the Reconstruction Era. "Senator Wilson's bill to make free the wives and children of colonial soldiers has just passed the Senate by a vote of 27 to 10. It is estimated that the bill will immediately make free in Delaware, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee and Missouri, from 75,000 to 100,000 women and children." Abolitionist Henry Wilson (1812-1875), author of the three volume History of the Rise and Fall of the Slave Power in the America, served as President of the Massachusetts Senate (1851-1852); US Senator from Massachusetts (1855-1873); Chairman of the Senate Military Affairs Committee (1861-1873); and Vice President under Grant (1873-1875). Wilson introduced a series of Civil War era bills and measures, which served as a precursor to the Thirteenth Amendment. First among these was a bill that abolished slavery in Washington DC., which was passed in 1862. Later that year, Wilson furthered his effort and drafted a bill that allowed African Americans to be compensated for military-related labor. In 1864, following the Emancipation Proclamation and the Enrollment Act, Wilson secured freedom for former slaves who served in the Union Army, and advocated for them to receive equal military compensation. In 1865, Wilson initiated a bill to free the families of former slaves serving in the Union Army, who lived in the Union's remaining slave-holding states. "President Lincoln signed the measure into law on March 3, 1865, and an estimated 75,000 African American women and children were freed in Kentucky alone."
