Description
27/12/1811. The first Census was conducted in 1790, and marshals of the U.S. judicial districts were responsible for the gathering of the Census data for each family in each district. A summary was then transmitted to the President through the Department of State. The second census was conducted in the same way.At that time, the U.S. had no formal means to measure the growth or decline of its manufacturing sectors, though these were an increasingly important part of its economy. An act of May 1, 1810 sought to address this problem by giving the federal government authority to collect more information on the size of the states’ economies. It required that marshals not only transmit to the Secretary of State the general population data, but also that they convey to the Secretary of the Treasury “an account of the several manufacturing establishments and manufactures within their several districts, territories, and divisions.” The results of the 1810 census, a combination of the information gathered by the Secretaries of State and Treasury, were published in a 180-page volume.Letter Signed, Department of State, December 27, 1811, to Albert Gallatin, Secretary of the Treasury. “Sir, I transmit to you herewith a printed copy of the Third Census of the Inhabitants of the United States and of their territories. I have considered it would be gratifying to you, who have participated in the Labors of this work, to have an opportunity of viewing it in its complete and final form; and it cannot fail to be useful as a document in the office which you hold.” Letters between cabinet members on essential business are quite uncommon. This is the first from Monroe to Gallatin that we have had.

Description
1950. Also included is a signed photograph of her husband, Juan Peron, President of Argentina Eva Duarte de Peron was one of the greatest woman politicians of the 20th century. She arose from poverty to became the virtual ruler of Argentina and the world’s most powerful woman of her day.Eva was a popular actress in Argentine films, and basically clawed and scratched her way to the attention of rising military leader Juan Peron. Her brilliant political strategy and speeches made her immensely popular and a true heroine to the poor (her ""descamisados,"" or ""shirtless ones”). In 1945, their cries in the streets for “Peron” (orchestrated by Eva) led to him becoming President. She was only 26 when thus assuming power. Though she nominally ran the Ministry of Labor, she was the real source of power, not he. Her concern for the poor and efforts to aid them were real if somewhat unorthodox - those who came to her asking for money usually came away with cash. This in fact was the Perons’ secret for maintaining their rule - giveaways to supporters. Her Foundation Eva Peron raised huge sums of money, mainly for the benefit of the poor, but to buttress her power as well. Eva set an example of success not only to the poor but to women generally. On a continent where women played no role in politics, she secured for them the right to vote. Though she was loved if not worshipped by millions, she was hated by the army and the wealthy. Eva died of cancer at age 33, yet her legend remained alive and raised her to almost goddess-like stature among the poor, many of whom referred to her as Saint Evita. With her gone, Peron could not hold onto power and was forced into exile. The only women politicians to compare to her in the 20th century were Golda Meir, Indira Gandhi and Margaret Thatcher. Yet Thatcher at age 54 was the youngest of them to reach the summit, and none of the 3 had risen from the poor.A superb black and white photograph of her, 6.5 by 8.5 inches, 1950, professionally mounted to about 11 by 16 inches, and inscribed and signed on the mat in Spanish “For Mrs. Elsie Haarman, affectionately, Eva Peron.” Haarman was a member of a Texas group which visited Argentina in 1950 on a goodwill tour. Just the finest signed photo imaginable, and an extraordinary rarity.Evita has been the subject of an immensely popular Broadway musical and then a hit movie. A poignant scene attended the filming of the movie. Madonna, looking like Eva’s double, spoke from the balcony at the Casa Rosada (the Argentine White House) to a cast of thousands of extras. Gazing at her, some older people were overwhelmed and began crying, as if Santa Evita had returned to life and stood before them. This comes with a 9 1/2 by 13 1/2 inch signed photograph of her husband, Argentine strongman and president, Juan Peron.

Description
29/08/1986. ""Too much of the debate has focused only on the possibilities of developing a one hundred percent leak-proof population defense which even the strongest proponents agree could not be developed until next century.""President Nixon made his mark in the area of foreign policy. Although he had made his own career as a militant opponent of Communism, Nixon saw opportunities to reduce the temperature of the Cold War by improving relations with the Soviet Union. One of these was the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks negotiations, which were a series of meetings beginning in Helsinki that lasted from November 17, 1969 until May 1972. After a long deadlock, the first results of SALT I came in May 1971, when an agreement was reached over anti-ballistic missiles systems. Further discussion brought the negotiations to an end in Moscow on May 26, 1972, when Richard Nixon and Leonid Brezhnev signed both the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty and the Interim Agreement Between The United States of America and The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics on Certain Measures With Respect to the Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms.  These served to slow the growth in nuclear weapons and halt extensive proliferation.A premise of the Cold War, mutually assured destruction, meant simply that neither the US nor the USSR would attack the other because it would ensure that both would be obliterated.  You could get the first shot in, but unless you wiped out the entire capacity of the other side in one blow, you would ensure your own demise.  In 1969, Nixon announced an anti-ballistic missile defense system, called Safeguard, which aimed to protect the deterrent nuclear force of the United States, its missile fields, to maintain that deterrent capacity.  This happened at the same time as the country was publicly debating the possibility of protecting entire US cities in a shield, the technology of which did not exist.  Safeguard never fully operated at its intended capacity and in fact was shut down soon after it launched.Ronald Reagan was not an active proponent of mutually assured destruction (MAD).  In 1983, he proposed the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) to use ground-based and space-based systems to protect the United States from attack by ballistic strategic nuclear weapons. The initiative focused on strategic defense rather than the prior strategic offense doctrine of MAD.  It was dubbed ""Star Wars"" by critics.  The goal was to neutralize the Soviets' nuclear capacity, regardless of the success of ongoing negotiations. The Soviets strongly opposed the Strategic Defense Initiative, as they could not afford to match the U.S. in this area, and they felt that if successful the concept of mutually assured destruction would be lost and the U.S. would be in a dominant position. In November of 1985, Gorbachev and Reagan were to meet in Geneva for a major summit. Both the Soviet Union and the United States were seeking to cut the number of nuclear weapons, with the Soviets seeking to halve the number of nuclear-equipped bombers and missiles, and the U.S. desiring to ensure that neither side gained a first-strike advantage, and to protect rights to the Strategic Defense Initiative. These ideas of arms limitations and strategic defense were the cornerstones to the Cold War negotiations between the two global powers in a bi-polar world. One of those who joined the debate was U.S. Grant Sharp, a 4-star admiral who was Commander in Chief of the US Pacific Fleet and of US Pacific Command, including during the Gulf of Tonkin Incident.  He wrote a piece in the San Diego papers, which advocated the protection of US-based counter-force assets, which touched on a subject central to Nixon's presidency and close to his heart, missiles that would serve as a first-strike deterrent.Typed letter signed, August 29, 1986, New York City, to Admiral U.S. Grant Sharp. ""Through our mutual friend, Bill Stover, I have just learned of Mrs. Sharp's passing and I want to take this opportunity to express my deepest sympathy.  You can take comfort in the fact that she was by your side for over fifty-six years as you traveled all over the world during your career of outstanding service in the United States Navy. Mrs. Nixon joins me in extending our best wishes to you and your family.   Sincerely, Richard Nixon.""P.S. I also want to you that I thought your column on SDI which appeared in the San Diego Union was right on target.  Too much of the debate has focused only on the possibilities of developing a one hundred percent leak-proof population defense which even the strongest proponents agree could not be developed until next century.  On the other hand, a defense of our counter-force missile silos which presently are vulnerable to a first strike from Soviet Union's SS-18s could be deployed in the near future.  Unless the Soviet Union agrees to offensive cuts which would remove its first-strike capability, we have no choice but to go forward with an SDI program which would deny them that capacity.""

Description
New York: Privately Printed for Subscribers Only, 1920. First edition. Very Good +. One of 1,250 numbered copies, of which this is 349. Large octavo (9 5/8 x 6 1/4 inches; 245 x 160 mm). [4], [1]- 536, [4, blank] pp. Publisher's dark blue buckram, spine with four shallow raised bands, lettered in gilt in second compartment. Slight edgewear. Bookplate and small numerical sticker to upper pastedown. Upper inner hinge expertly and subtly repaired. A bit of toning to edges and a small dusty finger-mark to margin of title page. A clean, Very Good+ copy. This New York edition preceded the London edition by seven months. Despite significant delays, Women in Love was published as a limited edition in 1920 in the US due to obscenity concerns in the UK, where D. H. Lawrence's earlier work was banned. Women in Love acts as sequel to The Rainbow (1915) although the two were originally envisioned as a two-part novel. Fears of litigation led Lawrence to work with the publisher Thomas Seltzer, who despite his own legal battles against vice censorship, would eventually also publish Lady Chatterley's Lover (1928). Women in Love follows the romantic dramas of the Brangwen sisters, Gudrun and Ursulam, leading to tragedy in the Tyrolian Alps. Although the author David Herbert Lawrence (1885-1930) was best known for his controversial novels, he was also a prolific poet and essayist. "Lawrence was a rebellious and profoundly polemical writer with radical views, who regarded sex, the primitive subconscious, and nature as cures to what he considered the evils of modern industrialized society" (Poets.org). Lawrence's compelling narratives have been adapted into numerous film and TV productions. Roberts & Poplowski A15a. Very Good +.

Description
Chicago: F.J. Schulte & Company, 1889. First Edition. Quarto (25.5cm); brown cloth, with titling and pictorial elements stamped in gilt, black, and red on spine and front cover; floral-patterned endpapers; xv,16-698pp, with portrait frontispiece of the author and numerous illustrations throughout. As usual, pp.689-90 lacking from pagination. Spine ends pushed and a bit worn, corners bumped, with minute board exposure to lower corners; foxing to right edge of textblock, and a few preliminary and terminal leaves; old glue repairs to hinges, with a few partial splits to front hinge; only Very Good. Essential, if self-serving, account of the Haymarket massacre and subsequent trials, written by the Chicago police captain who served as the lead investigator in the months following the bombing. During the course of his investigation Schaack was dismissed from the force for fabricating evidence; this voluminous work was largely his attempt at self-vindication. Profusely illustrated and with a wealth of biographical material (not all of it reliable) on the principal figures involved. GLENN (Haymarket Bibliography) 449. 82691.

Description
New York: Random House, 1972. Uncorrected Proof. Tall octavo. 28cm. Publisher's sea green card wraps printed in black to front cover. 218pp [paginated by hand]. Clean and sharp with some sunning to the upper sections of the covers, strong and tight; internally clean and fresh with contemporary review clippings laid in at the front, and Crane Duplicatiing Services ink stamp to recto of the rear wrap. A very good copy. An advance uncorrected proof for, presumably, the paperback printing (the ad hoc pagination does not correspond with the hardback edition) of Alvarez's monumental and controversial work on the causes and nature of the suicidal impulse. Alvarez offers a far more complex and nuanced view of the concept of suicide than was contemporaneously 'acceptable' attempting to sideline the stigmatic descriptors involving 'cowardice' or mental illness and instead presenting the implication that in some cases, self annihilation becomes the only rational and sensitive course of human action.
