Description
Sofia: Stopansko Razvitie, 1947. First edition; 8 x 10 3/4; pp. [7], 8-17, [47]; original beige wraps with red title; several spots to front cover and some age-toning; closed cut to tail of spine; internally clean; illustrated with full-page and in-line monochrome photographs; few words underlined in pencil; overall very good. Published on June 18, 1947 by the Bulgarian Ministry of Arts and Information - the book was a tribute to Georgi Dimitrov on his 65th birthday. He led the Comintern from 1934 to 1943 and was the first Communist leader of Bulgaria from 1946 to 1949. In 1926, fleeing a death sentence for leading an uprising against Alexander Tsankov (then Prime Minister of Bulgaria and leader of the Democratic Alliance), Dimitrov settled in Germany. He was arrested in Berlin in 1933 for allegedly conspiring to set the Reichstag on fire. His infamous Leipzig Trial followed, in which his self-defense, calm demeanor, and eventual release were regarded as legendary in Communist Bulgaria. The commemorative book contains an 11-page biographical feature followed by 47 glossy pages of photographs, including many with various dignitaries such as Joseph Stalin, Mikhail Kalinin, Maxim Gorky, Viacheslav Molotov, and Kliment Voroshilov. There are also facsimiles of documents from the famous trial. No copies in OCLC or the trade.
