Very good plus in very good plus jacket.
Description
New York: Villard, 1997. First printing. Very good plus in very good plus jacket.. Presentation copy, first edition, of this collection of the great gonzo journalist's letters, Thompson's own copy from his library, inscribed to his dear friend and co-conspirator Jimmy Buffett and his wife. Thompson and Buffett met in the early-1970s after Buffett bought a home in Aspen, CO near Thompson's. Thompson attended the Buffett's 1977 wedding and shortly thereafter, during Thompson's separation and divorce from his first wife, Buffett took in Hunter's son Juan for a time. Buffett eventually loaned the writer his Florida apartment; soon Thompson was subletting from the singer (and famously running up a phone bill of thousands of dollars, which Buffett reluctantly paid). Thompson was even on stage at one of Buffett's earliest performances of "Margaritaville." "I was probably responsible for his Key West years," Buffett would later recall (Werner and Seymour, 225). The two remained close for the rest of Thomson's life (Buffett would blurb Thomson RUM DIARY), as testified by the warm presentation in this book ("...we were fated from the start"), which Thompson inscribed and dated (but did not sign/autograph) for the Buffett's just before his 1997 Christmas party. Thompson used his own personal copy of the book, and according to his widow, Anita, Thompson had intended to formally sign and present the book to his friends at the party. But Thompson forgot and the book remained in his library - half-inscribed - until his 2004 suicide. A epic association between these two epic personalities, artists who practically made careers of being professional party-ers. 9'' x 6''. riginal black and grey boards. In original color photographic jacket designed by Daniel Rembert. Red endpapers. xxxii, [2], 684, [2] pages. Inscribed by Thompson on the left-hand side of double title-page spread: "To Jimmy + Jane / Xmas '97 / Now you know / why we were / fated from the / start." With Thompson's ownership blindstamp embossment to opposite title page. Some bumping and edgewear at extremities. Overall, clean and sound.

Very good, with some toning to spines, rebacked with original spines laid down, bindings secure with some webbing exposed on the front hinge of Vol. II, edges lightly bumped, small closed tear to folded map in Vol. I, some shallow chipping to edge of front free endpaper in Vol. II, and Duff Cooper and book collector William A. Strutz bookplates to front pastedowns. Overall, a very pleasing presentation copy. Sadleir 14. In North America, Victorian-era novelist Anthony Trollope records his thoughts and observations from his travels through the United States and Canada between 1861 and 1862, during the early stages of the Civil War. Interestingly, Anthony's mother also published an account of her experiences in the United States, a popular book in its time entitled Domestic Manners of the Americans (1832), which painted Americans in a decidedly less favorable light than Anthony's work. Anthony Trollope was a popular and prolific 19th century English novelist, best remembered for his six-novel Barsetshire series, and The Way We Live Now (1875), the latter a satirical novel that excoriates corruption in London. . Signed. Hard Cover. Very Good. Presentation Copy.

Description
28/10/1886. One of the great American landmarks and the most inspiring symbol of American freedom ever erected, the Statue of Liberty greeted millions upon millions of immigrants to the Promised Land, from whom so many Americans today are descended. It was the embodiment of the words written on its base:“Give me your tired, your poor,Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”An uncommon 3 1/2 by 6 inch postcard of the statue, inscribed and signed, “With my thanks for your cordial congratulations, Bartholdi”. We obtained this recently in France. The inscription invites conjecture that this was signed in the wake of the dedication of the statue on October 28, 1886.

Un An de la Vie d un Jeune Homme. Histoire véritable en 17 Chapitres. Escrits par lui-même et Lithographiés par Victor Adam. Paris: Sazerac et Duval, Engelmann, Langlumè & Brossier, 1824. First edition. Folio (13 1/4 x 9 7/8 inches; 336 x 251 mm.). Facsimile cover title. Seventeen superb hand-colored lithograph plates printed by Langlumé. Modern royal blue cloth, front cover with facsimile title pasted on. Short marginal tear, neatly repaired to lower margin of first plate, not affecting image. Plates 2, 8, 15 & 17 with the blind stamp of the publisher Sazerac et Duval in lower blank margin. A very good example. One year in the life of a young man. A true story in seventeen chapters. Written by himself and lithographed by Victor Adam. Victor Adam (1801-1865) is better known for his later works of pictorial journalism or for his many lithographs of military history than for his early works of fashion and society life. "His immense production contains many amusing albums concerning the life of the time such as Un an dans la vie de jeune homme. This series is a sort of bourgeois rake's progress. A young man from the country comes to Paris to sample its pleasures. He acquires a new wardrobe; buys a horse; is duped by gamblers, makes a conquest of a pretty lady; exclaims, 'Jasmin! she seemed so artless,' as he lies recovering from the resulting malady; is imprisoned for debt; writes at last to 'the old one,' a buxom woman of means; and is accepted by her in the final plate. The series is unusual among the albums of the time in that it tells a consecutive story, and it certainly has more spirit and finish than Adam's usual work" (Ray). A lovely copy of the first book by this gifted painter and illustrator. Very scarce. The Plates: 1. J'arrive! (I arrive!) 2. Je ne me reconnais plus. (I do not recognize myself anymore.) 3. C'est superbe! (It is superb!) 4. Elle me regarde! Dieu quel bonheur! (She's looking at me! God what happiness!) 5. C'est une femme honnête. (She is an honest woman.) 6. Je ne pouvais pas aller à pied. (I couldn't walk.) 7. C'est à qui m'aura. (Who's going to get me?) 8. Comment Docteur! (How Doctor!) 9. Jasmin!...elle avait l'air si ingénu!! (Jasmine! ... she looked so ingenuous !!) 10. Quel guignon! (What a mess!) 11. Des mémoires! Fi donc. (Memories! Fi then.) 12. Je le savais. (I knew it.) 13. St. Pelagie...charmant séjour! (St. Pelagie... lovely stay!) 14. Quels inhumains! Me mettre dehors! (What inhumans! Kick me out!) 15. Aux grands maux les grands remédes. (To great ills, great remedies.) 16. La simpiternelle serait ma bisaïeule. (The simpiternal would be my grandmother.) 17. Il faut faire une Fin! Je lépouse. (We must make an End! I marry him.) Bobins V, 1523; Hiler, p.6; Lipperheide 3561; Ray. Art of the French Illustrated Book, 126.

Description
Photographic Image. Very Good. No Binding. Collection of four tastefully executed 7 ¾" x 9 ¾" silver gelatin photographs of an editorially posed torso to mid-thigh of an unknown male model taken by an unknown professional photographer. These were likely taken during the beefcake photography era of the mid-20th-century, which is characterized as a rise in published homoerotic images of male models and bodybuilders, in part to feature the artistry of the human male form, which is displayed here in this collection. All 9 ¾ in. x 7 ¾ in. These photos were likely removed from a scrapbook, leaving behind a strip of glue marks on the backs of the photographs and some paper residue still adhered to the glue on the back of one photograph. Otherwise the photos are in very good condition. .

Description
[Los Angeles], 1983. Near fine.. Dynamic, panoramic, awestruck photos of the Hermosa Beach male volleyball players of 1983. Organized and labeled set of panoramic photos from the men's beach volleyball scene of early '80s California, documenting a single match played by the Hermosa Pier some thirteen years before the sport would gain the widespread international popularity to become an Olympic event. Among the identified players are two who played on college volleyball teams (Gary Bruckner for El Camino College, Bill Stetson for USC) and one professional competition player (Clay Howard). The photographs themselves capture dramatic moments of athletic exertion and heroic posing, shot from adoring low angles, frequently reminiscent of the more worshipful shots from physique magazines of yore. Behind the leaping and diving players rise the Mermaid Restaurant, the Poop Deck bar, the Strand Bath-House: all the now-faded or vanished institutions of the Hermosa Pier. In all, a quintessential moment of early 1980s California, captured in all its shirtless glory. 11.5 x 12''. Two padded leatherette board photo albums. Titles in black marker to both albums. Five cardstock leaves to each album, with 39 total black and white panoramic photographs (4'' x 10'') mounted recto and verso under plastic overlay. Photographs numbered and sometimes labeled in black Sharpie or with added post-it notes (to plastic overlay).

Marbled paper boards, calf spine. Good
Description
Bucksport, Maine, 1836-1866. Hardcover. Marbled paper boards, calf spine. Good. 177 pages, with 54 pages utilized. This volume offers a window into the daily and season operations of a mid-19th-century timber mill. The proprietor(s) record work involving spruce, hemlock, pine, and both "soft" and "hard" woods over the years. Timber frequently serves as currency, exchanged for supplies or labor. Entries note the boarding of workers and animals, as well as barters for pork, potatoes, butter, molasses, smoked and dried fish, flour and beans. Additional exchanges include shoe mending and log rafting. Local men mentioned include John and Charles Harriman, Ebenezer Grant, Isaac Eldridge, James Pinkham, Benjamin Snow, William, George, and Sam Page, Daniel Page, Silas Quimby, and others. At least two distinct hands appear in the entries. In the early 1800s Bucksport was a small Penobscot River town whose economy and daily life revolved around water-powered mills, river trade, and supporting crafts and services that grew up around them. Buckstown was incorporated in 1792; the name changed to Bucksport in 1817. Col Jonathan Buck had earlier built a sawmill on Mill River, the small stream that runs through the village, establishing milling as the economic anchor even before the Revolution. Lumber went into local house and barn building and coastal shipyards, but also into the coastal trade via the Penobscot River, which functioned as the mill's export route. Mill hands and owner-operators worked daylight hours when water flow allowed, adjusting to spring freshets and summer low water. Men combined mill work seasonally with farming, logging upriver in winter, and occasional coastal voyages. The mill site was a local gathering point: farmers brought logs or grain, exchanged news, and negotiated small credits or in-kind payments with the mill owner, whose position in town politics and church life was correspondingly prominent. Covers heavily rubbed, rear hinge weak but holding. Interior toned and foxed.

Description
The World: Gloeckner & Newby Company, 1935. General wear. Some photographs are faded or clouded, it is unclear if they were exposed wrong initially or have become so over time. Envelope has minor tears, and edge wear.. A collection of seventy-one (71) black and white photographs of a Grand World Tour that went from America to Asia, the Middle East, Northern African, and Europe. The collection is dated to circa 1934-1935 as there are several pictures of the Sky Ride Towers, a ride at the 1933-1934 Chicago World's Fair, A Century of Progress. As there are little to no crowds in the photographs, they were most likely taken after the fair ended in October 1934 but prior to when the towers were demolished in August of 1935. A young man was traveling, based on captions identified as "myself" in the photographs. Most of the locations and people in the photographs have been identified on the back. The tour appears to have started in Chicago, IL, where a train was then taken Northwest, though Minneapolis to Glacier National Park in Montana, over the Rockies and to Seattle. There are fourteen (14) photographs from this portion of the trip, most from the train ride though the Rockies. From Seattle, he boarded the a ship call Heian Maru and sailed passed Vancouver on his way to Japan. There are eight (8) photographs (including two duplicates) from his time in Japan, of note are: The Great Buddha from Kamakura (where according to the description on the back there was a sign that says "No Photographing", which was obviously ignored), Hachiman Shrine in Kamakura, and the Imperial Palace in Tokyo. It is here that the exact route taken for the rest of the trip becomes unclear. Based on the information on the back of the photographs, he boarded another NYK Ocean Liner named the Hakozaki Manu (launched in 1922 and sunk in 1945 during WWII). There are two (2) photographs of his time on this ship. He toured other parts of Asia, such as China, Hong Kong, Philippines, Vietnam, and Singapore, before heading to the Middle East and Northern Africa. It is unknown if he took the Hakozaki Maru the whole way, or switched to another ship. For example, there is one (1) photograph in the collection of a group of three people on the "Grant", which may or may not be the SS President Grant (originally known as the Pine Tree State, and later renamed the USS Harris during WWII) which was an ocean liner that in the 1930s operated in the 'orient' first for the American Orient Lines and later the American Mail Lines. However the exact routes the ship serviced were unable to be identified. There are nine (9) photographs from his time in Asia, of note are: Hong Kong Harbor, University of Santo Tomas and the Santa Clara Convent in Manila, Saigon Notre Dame Cathedral, and the Singapore Harbor. Side note: There is one unidentified photograph included in this grouping that is most likely of Hong Kong, but that is unverified. As he continued on his journey he stopped in Sri Lanka, and there are two (2) photographs of Colombo, the largest city in Sri Lanka. From there he stopped briefly in Yemen, taking one (1) photograph of the Cisterns of Tawila, otherwise known as the Tawila Tanks in Aden, Yemen. He crossed through the Red Sea to the Mediterranean Sea, mostly likely through the Suez Canal, but the only photograph in the collection from this portion of the trip: it is a single (1) photograph of him on the bow of the ship in the middle of the Red Sea at noon with a young boy. There are five (5) photographs of his time in Egypt with the Great Pyramids and the Sphinx. After Egypt, he most likely sailed across the Mediterranean Sea to Italy, more specially Pompeii, where there are two (2) photographs of him in the ruins of Pompeii. He then passed through the Strait of Gibraltar, proven by two (2) photographs in the collection, one of the Rock of Gibraltar and the other from inside the Spanish section of the town of Gibraltar itself. Next stop was France, where he spent some time in Paris, Marseille, and Rouen. There are six (6) photographs of his time in France, of note: Notre Dame, Place de la Concorde, and the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, and the Gros Horloge and the site of Joan of Arc's execution in Rouen. The last stop on his journey was England, where he went to London and Winchester. There are five (5) photographs from his time in England including Westminster Abbey, Whitehall, and Winchester College and its War Cloister (a war memorial). He traveled home to America on the RMS Berengaria, mostly like to New York City. The Berengaria was an ocean liner built and launched as the Imperator in 1913 by the Hambur-Amerika Line. She was given to England as reparation for the sinking of the Lusitania and sold to the Cunard Line (who merged with the White Star Line in 1934) and renamed the Berengaria. She served as a transatlantic ocean liner sailing between Southampton, England and New York until she caught fire in 1938 and was shortly thereafter scrapped. There are two (2) photographs the collection of the journey on the Berengaria, one of her deck, and the other of a boxing match taking place for entertainment. A fundraising circular for the Williamsburg Mission to the Jews, which was a missionary group set on evangelizing the Jews in New York that was started by a former Rabbi, Leopold Cohn (1862-1937). The circular is double sided, with the front providing a bit of information on the organization itself, "Our method is that of Paul, 'To the Jew I became as a Jew.' Our testimony is that of Jews to Jews." The circular describes how the mission provided bible meetings for adults, Sunday School and Sewing Schools for children, a medical department for the Jewish poor, as well as general Poor Fund, and lastly a Literary Fund. Also listed are the members of the Board of Trustees, Advisory Council and Board of Referees. A small black and white illustration of their headquarters, "Beth Sar Shalom (House of the Prince of Peace)", is located on the top left. The back side is a blank fill-in contribution form. Also included is the corresponding return envelope. Single page, double sided circular with envelope. Measures 8 1/2" x 5 1/2" (circular), 6" x 3 1/2" (envelope). The mission was founded in 1894 by (former Rabbi) Leopold Cohn (1862-1937) under the name Brownsville Mission whose goal was to evangelizing the Jews in New York. It changed its name to the Williamsburg Mission to the Jews in 1897 when it moved to the Brooklyn, NY neighborhood of Williamsburg. From 1924 to 1984 it was known as the American Board of Missions to the Jews until it was then renamed for the last time to Chosen People Ministries (CPM). The organization is still in existence today, and is considered to be a "Messianic Jewish" nonprofit.
