Description
London: James Rivington and James Fletcher, 1757. First edition in English. Hardcover. Very good. Two volumes. 8vo. (20),455 (8),387pp. Folding map of California in volume I; 4 copperplates (including frontispieces) each with two images, for a total of 8 images. Full speckled calf, nicely rebacked at an early date, retaining the original lettering labels. Light wear especially to the corners, the map with two closed marginal tears not affecting the image, else a very good set. With the armorial bookplate of Sir Joseph Copley, Bart, as well as small circular leather bookplate of 'CFH'. This is the first translation into English (or any other language) of Father Venegas' 'Noticia de la California', published in 1757 in Madrid (contrary to the 1858 date found on the title page of this edition.) Venegas' manuscript was written between 1734 and 1739. It went unpublished because the Spanish Crown did not want details of New Spain disseminated. But eventually another Jesuit, Padre Burriel, edited the manuscript and saw it published. The large map in volume I is based on Kino's 1702 map which is indeed revolutionary as it was the first attempt to end the notion that California was an island. Padre Consag confirmed Keno's findings in a 1746 expedition to the mouth of the Colorado. Kino's map is considered foundational to the cartographic history of the Southwest. As Tooley notes (p. 111), Kino's map was not generally accepted; it was not until Consag confirmed Kino's discovery that caused Ferdinand VII in 1747 to issue a royal decree: California is not an island. The map in the Spanish edition contained ten vignetes, eight of which are reproduced on the plates in this English edition. Zamorano 80, No. 78a. .

Description
Very good. A quantity of eight flyers promoting JFA concerts in Phoenix, Los Angeles, and elsewhere between 1982 and 1986, photomechanically reproduced on 8.5" x 11" sheets of white, pink, or yellow paper. PLUS: "JFA Songbook" (see below). Overall, the material is very clean, having been stored in a filing cabinet, free from light and handling for forty years. PLUS: five newspaper skateboard mags (1977-1980), newsprint (folded for many years and toned). PLUS: two surfer mags (1973-1974), newsprint (toned). A FINE AND EARLY ARCHIVE OF SKATE PUNK FLYERS, DOCUMENTING THE ROLE OF THE BAND JODY FOSTER'S ARMY (JFA) AND THEIR CONTEMPORARIES IN THE SKATE CULTURE IN THE EARLY 1980s. SEVERAL FLYERS ARE ICONIC AND ARE NOW UNFINDABLE IN FRESH, MUSEUM QUALITY AS HERE, HAVING BEEN STORED IN A FILING CABINET FOR EXACTLY FORTY YEARS, TO WHICH IS ADDED A SMALL QUANTITY OF NEWSPRINT SKATEBOARD MAGS (1977-1980) AND RELATED EPHEMERA. Two cultural phenomena of the 1970s and 80s continue to exert a tremendous impact on the youth of twenty-first century: skateboarding (particularly skate-punk) and hip-hop, both of which began as expressions of disaffected "outsiders" who were unwilling or unable to participate in mainstream America, and did so in a completely DYI manner. Today, both phenomena have been co-opted and commercialized worldwide, particularly in terms of music, linguistics, fashion, art and culture. We are able to offer a small but very interesting "time capsule" of the former. Concerning skate-punk band JFA: "With roots in the Arizona and Southern California skateboard scenes, JFA was formed in 1981, nineteen days after the failed attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan by John Hinckley Jr., an obsessed fan of Jodie Foster. The original lineup of vocalist Brian Brannon, guitarist Don "Redondo" Pendleton, bassist Michael Cornelius, and drummer Mike 'Bam-Bam' Sversvold developed a faster, more focused sound that combined the nascent hardcore of Black Flag and The Germs with the twangy guitar that defined The Ventures and Dick Dale. With lyrics and imagery steeped in the lifestyle, JFA appealed to skaters who saw themselves taking surf culture to the streets." (johnson rare books and archives, from whom we acquired the present collection). HIGHLIGHTS OF THE COLLECTION: Flyer of the very important May 18, 1984 concert with skate punk pioneers The Big Boys (Austin, TX) at the Stardust Ballroom in Hollywood. Billed as "L.A.'s First All Skate Gig!" and sponsored by Powell & Peralta, Tracker, and other skateboard manufacturers, it also included performances by JFA, Aggression, Faction, Ill Repute, and Tales of Terror. We know it was a great show because we were there. ~ May 26 [1986] flyer for DRI (Dirty Rotten Imbeciles) et al. in Dallas, and on the other side JFA et al. ~ Aug. 17 [1982] flyer for Meat Puppets ("new album due anytime now from SST Records") and JFA in Tempe, AZ ~ Catalogue of Placebo Products / Placebo Records (JFA label), 4 pp. ~ Promotional flyer for JFA skateboard (two shapes, three sizes, generally 10.5" x 30.5") ~ Calendar for Sept. 1986 punk rock shows at the Downtown Danceteria in Minneapolis, MN promoting shows by the Circle Jerks, Liveskull and others ~ Nov. 21 [1983] flyer for Samhain, JFA, Necros, et al. at Stardust Ballroom, Hollywood ~ 3 flyers from JFA 1986 "Fifth Anniversary" tour (including Denver) ~ "The JFA Songbook" zine, together 8 ff., stapled as issued, containing "Lyrics to all known and remembered ballads," interspersed with photocopy cuttings and drawings. A worn copy of this item sold on for $139 (Dec. 12, 2022). PROVENANCE: Archive of Richard Bishop, guitarist of the Sun City Girls (Phoenix, AZ), an experimental rock band. Statement by Bishop "Each one was collected before the date of the show and have been in a filing cabinet ever since." ADDED: Seabreeze: Voice of the Western Surfing Association. San Diego, CA 1973-1974. Together two issues, newsprint: Nov. / Dec. 1973 (vol. 1 no. 6), 30, [2] pp. July / Aug. 1974 [vol. 2 no.1], pp. 3-32 (lacking front cover, thin vertical portion of spine area on p. 3 very lightly abraded). IN THIS INNOCUOUS 1974 SURFING NEWSPRINT TRADE MAGAZINE IS A VERY EARLY ADVERTISEMENT FOR BAHNE SKATEBOARDS TOGETHER WITH CADILLAC URETHANE WHEELS WHICH REVOLUTIONIZED SKATEBOARD TECHNOLOGY. Frank Nasworthy is notable in the history of skateboarding for introducing polyurethane wheel technology to the sport in the early 1970s. Due to the infancy of skateboarding at this time, Nasworthy sold his wheels directly to surf shops along the coast of California, and placed some tentative advertisements featuring a young Gregg Weaver in surfing magazines. In 1973 or 1974, Nasworthy licensed his wheels to Bahne and Co. of Encinitas, California and Bahne skateboards were packaged with Cadillac wheels. SEE: Ken Harrison, "Birthplace of skateboarding: Encinitas and Carlsbad; Forget about Santa Monica" (2019, online). ADDED: Assorted cheap skateboard publications (1977-1980) including Skateworld Journal vol. 1 no. 1 (1977) with O.G. Dogtowner Marty Grimes on the front cover (inside: an ad declares "Profit from the coming boom in Skateparks!") ~ Zero Gravity (1977) with George Orton on the front cover (in color) and other photos we've never seen, being a veritable time capsule of early vertical skateboarding ~ Skat'n News vol. 1 no. 10 (1979) with photos from Reseda SkaterCross skatepark (some news items circled in pen) ~ Skat'n News vol. 2 no 1 (1980), "Special Issue" primarily with photos and typewritten captions (some news items circled in pen) ~ Skat'n News vol. 2 no. 8 (1980) with Eric Grisham on the cover and many other excellent photos of the Reseda contest. Plus: The Argonaut, Marina Del Rey, CA (1981) with Christian Hosoi on the cover, and an article on the closing of the Marina Del Rey skatepark. Plus: 5 pieces of related ephemera, including two copies of the CHIP Skateboarders' Safety Handbook.

London: Country Life, 1938. First edition. Fine. A Fine Copy. Octavo (8 7/8 x 5 3/4 inches; 225 x 145 mm.). xix, [i, blank], 255, [1], [4, blank] pp. Thirteen plates including two in color. Specially bound by Leighton-Straker ca. 1938 (stamp-signed in gilt on rear turn-in). Full red morocco, upper cover lettered in gilt with Chinese characters, smooth spine lettered in gilt and Chinese characters, publisher's decorative end-papers, top edge gilt, others uncut. A fine example. A rare perspective from an artist and unwitting expat Chiang Yee (1903-1977), who called himself the "Silent Traveller." He was a poet and author who left China to study economics and administration at the London School of Economics; eventually war left him stuck in England. He traveled widely around the country --and left gloriously observed and highly detailed accounts of his journeys along the way. His travelogues are not just accounts of peoples and places, but also offer perspectives on wartime life and his opposition to Nazism. Eventually he would move to the United States and continued traveling much farther afield: his final book being The Silent Traveller in Japan (1972) published a few years before he finally returned to China (Bromley House Library). This copy was bound by the firm of Leighton-Straker. These binders bound many fine editions, perhaps the most well known being a signed limited edition of Churchill's Marlborough, Rex Whistler's illustrated edition of Hans Andersen, and books for Cresset, Golden Cockerel and Nonesuch Presses. Fine.

State laws in Kentucky prohibited legal marriages between Blacks and Mulattoes while enslaved and after the Civil War, until the Cohabitation Act of 1866 passed in Kentucky on February 14, 1866. The Act provided that "all negroes and mulattos may intermarry with each other in the same manner and under the same regulations that are provided by law for white persons." This allowed cohabitating Blacks to marry and their children to be declared legitimate if they paid a fifty-cent fee and recorded with the county clerk their intention to remain married. For an extra twenty-five cents, they could obtain a certificate. [Kentucky Historical Society Legislative History, website of Kentucky General Assembly.] Warren County is in south central Kentucky; Bowling Green is the county seat. William H[enry] Edley [1860-1935] was a West Point cadet, served as Chief Deputy for the Circuit Court Clerk of Bowling Green, Adjutant in 3d Kentucky Regiment Infantry, and Warren County Court clerk for four years. He moved to Oklahoma, where he was elected delegate to the Oklahoma constitutional convention and served in several committees, then to Wyoming in 1908 where he was made receiver of public moneys at the Lander land office from 1913-1922 and ran for Democratic candidate for Assessor in 1922. Frank J. Potter [1877-1939] was a Bowling Green farmer in his early years until he met the famous Edgar Cayce, the famed clairvoyant. who started out as a photographer. Cayce moved to Bowling Green in 1902 and worked for a bookstore owned by Potter's cousins. Potter met and partnered with Cayce in the purchase of a local photography studio in 1904. Cayce studied photography and worked as a photographer in Bowling Green until 1910, at which time he went into business with a few men to establish the Hopkinsville Psychic Reading Corporation. Potter went on to become a salesman with a local coal company and then a fire insurance company. He spent many years caring for his ailing sister and later his ailing mother, after which he had a nervous breakdown. He committed suicide by shooting himself in the head in a hotel room on New Year's Eve in 1939. Sylvester Antony [a/k/a Anthony], born around 1878, married Etta Renick [1885-1913]. They had a daughter, Ivy Anthony, who died in November, 1919, at the age of 10 years old from pneumonia. They had two sons, Sherman and Anthony, the latter dying in infancy. The 1910 USFC lists Sylvester as single, working as a deck hand on a steamboat in Warren County. His single status can be explained by the fact that Etta's death certificate shows her as divorced at the time of her death in September, 1913, from typhoid. We did not find Sylvester Anthony listed on any further censuses, nor did we locate his death certificate. [Census and vital statistics records from Ancestry website.].

Description
JOHN VAN DRUTEN (1901-1957). Van Druten was an English-born playwright and thespian successful in both England and America.Archive. 4 letters. 1956. A series of letters written by John van Druten to an aspiring Ohio playwright named Jerry Weingart. Weingart first contacted van Druten through his agent Monica McCall, asking van Druten to read and critique Weingarts play. After several more months of exchanging letters, van Druten commented on Weingarts play in a handwritten letter dated September 16, 1956. Van Druten would die the following year, in December 1957, from heart problems.a) TLS. 2pgs. January 12, 1956. New York, NY. A typed letter signed John van Druten. On letterhead of the Hotel Dorset in New York City. Van Drutens first letter to Weingart, attributing his failure to reply to a prior letter to the lack of a return address. Dear Mr. Weingart, Monica McCall spoke to me of your letter to her, and I was very glad to hear of it. It gave me the chance I have been wanting of answering your last letter to me. I wrote you an answer when that came, and then found that you had written me on paper without an address at the head of it, so that I could not send you my reply. I had no idea where to find you. This one comes at the last right moment. I am leaving N.Y. for California in the morning. I want only to say that I have not forgotten my promise, and that I shall be glad to read your play next fall, when it and you are ready. This must be all for now. I still have to finish my packing. All my best wishes, and all thanks for your letters. Yours sincerely, John van Druten. In fine condition with a horizontal mailing fold and a small ink splotch in the lower right corner. Includes the original mailing envelope.b) TLS. 1pg. August 19, 1956. N.p. A typed letter signed John van Druten. Van Druten awaits receipt of Weingarts play and thinks that the two should limit correspondence in order to facilitate a more impartial critique. Dear Mr. Weingart, Very many thanks for your letter. My silence over the past ones has been due to ONE thing mainly which is that until now you have NEVER put your address on your letters, but only on your envelopes, and when I wantedto answer you, the envelope had been thrown away, and I was unable to. But this time some instinct has made you put the address on the letter, too so here is an answer. Not that I think a full correspondence between us is a good thing right now. I want to read your script first, and I shall be able to talk better the less I know of you. So sent it along, as soon as you are ready. But do not think that I was trying to chill you. Yours sincerely, John van Druten. In good condition with a tape residue in the two upper corners.c) ALS. 2pgs. September 16 [1956]. Montecito, CA. An autograph letter signed John van Druten. On letterhead of the Santa Barbara Biltmore Hotel and Cottages. Immediately after reading Weingarts play, van Druten writes to him with a painfully honest but compassionate account of his reaction. Dear Mr. Weingart, I finished your play an hour ago, and I think that I should write you about it straight away. There would be no point in my apologizing for what I have to say. You sent it to me for a professional opinion, and here it is. Look, I know that you have taken a year on this script, and I know how much it means to you. I found your letter that came with it a very sad one. But what you want, I believe to be the truth as it seems to me. And this is it. I dont see this as a play at all. I do not see a playwrights hand in it. Buried somewhere under it, I see a letter and semi-humorous attack on your men on a frustrated, silly, schoolboy approach to life and sex in ?? ?? but you never truly develop that, or your point of view about it. It is, no more than hinted at. There is no theatrical build, or development here. I dont know why the dream sequence is there, or what it proves, or what it leads to. I was more interested, for a reason I cannot find, in Natalie than in anyone else, but when she materialized, she seemed as bland and faceless as the others. You havent really written or differentiated your people at all. Neither they, nor their dialogue, emerge as real or as distinct, one from the other. And I see neither action, drama nor humour in your writing. Believe me, I know this sounds cruel and brutal. But I am of no use to you at all, if I do not write you as I feel. I cannot urge you to doctor or work on this script because I dont know and I am not sure that you know just what you are after. I dont even know what kind of play you are trying to write. Forgive me. I have not yet forgotten my own trying years, and I do know that this will cause you pain. But I think that for me to lie or to try and soften the plain might cause you a worse paint later on and it would be untrue to myelf. I will return the script under a separate cover. Respectfully yours, John van Druten. This letter is marked Part III on both side of the paper. In fine condition with a small ink splotch in the lower left corner of the recto.d) TLS. 1pg. November 9 [1956 or 1957]. California. A typed letter signed J. v. D.. Van Druten replies to a letter by Weingart, seemingly about a new script by Weingart. Van Druten also reports on his health after having suffered a stroke and comments on the work of British playwright Sir Terence Rattigan (1911-1977). Dear Mr. Weingart, Very many thanks for your letter. I think the reports on my health have gotten themselves a little mixed. The stroke, such as it was, was a very minor thing and left no harm behind it. What did leave harm was a heart condition that preceded it, a year ago in New York. I am much, much better from that now, and am able to work again, and get around some, too but I am also still suffering to some extent from inabilities from it, and to a general tendency to weakness. I really dont know what to say to you about your new script. You really do put almost too high a price on it, and on anyones capacity for being honest and fair about it. I KNOW that frame of mind I remember it from my own youth but I do not think one can say those things to another person, and then ask for advice or comment. It is asking for too much courage, and a possible capacity for too much cruelty. I admire Rattigan quite a lot, though not I think as much as you do. I saw in THE WINSLOW BOY a real capacity for his becoming a fine playwright, with a series and valuable mood in him. But since then, I have not seen it again. I have seen only a very good capacity for being a good and entertaining writing. THE WINSLOW BOY went deeper than that. Thank you again for writing. J. v. D.. In very good condition with tape residue in the upper corners.
