Description
London, 1874. Oblong twelvemo (3 x 5 1/2 inches; 75 x 140 mm.). Hand colored manuscript title-page and 59 original pen and ink hand-drawn satirical cartoons after images produced in Punch magazine, one dated January 1874. A fine Persian style lacquer 'wallet' binding ca. 1874, original purple velvet spine expertly restored, original silver clasp. Housed in a red felt lined quarter black morocco over pale green cloth clamshell case, spine with five raised bands, ruled and lettered in gilt in compartments. A charming manuscript with detailed pen and ink drawings based off images from Punch's Book of British Costumes. The notebook is predominantly filled with costumed characters, such as Coal Merchant, Peter of Pimlico (1380), several Anglo-Danish related illustrations, and various Kings of England. The original images were produced by the illustrator Edward Linley Sambourne (1844-1910), who worked for the journal Punch. "At the beginning he made his name by his 'social' drawings and especially by his highly elaborated initial letters. He drew his first political cartoon, properly so-called, in 1884, and ten years later began regularly to design the weekly second cartoon, following Sir John Tenniel as chief cartoonist in 1901...As a political designer, while distinguished for wit and force, he was invariably refined and good-humoured to the uttermost; yet it is essentially as an artist that he takes his highest place" (Britannica). Description
San Francisco: The Arion Press, 2001. Limited Edition. Hardcover. New. William Matthews. Oblong, 11 by 14 inches, 132 pages. The types are Monotype Scotch Roman (introduced around 1810, during the earlier time of the play), composed and cast at Mackenzie & Harris; and handset Lilith, designed by Lucien Bernard in 1930. Printing of the text was by letterpress. The paper is mouldmade Zerkall. The illustrations were printed by Urban Digital Color in continuous tone, using a Roland Digital Pigment Printer, on mouldmade Somerset paper. The four prints fold out from the insides of the cover, two from the front, two from the back. The books are handsewn and bound in boards covered with green Japanese cloth and are presented in a slipcase with cloth edges and paper sides. The edition is limited to 400 numbered copies for sale, each copy signed by the playwright and the artist. The extra suite of larger prints by William Matthews, "Four Views of Sidley Park", with each print numbered, titled, and signed by the artist. The prints are presented in a portfolio. Suite of four larger prints with the book: edition of 50. Arcadia is a masterwork of contemporary English drama, considered by many as the finest play by Tom Stoppard, whose work New York Times critic Clive Barnes has called "unrivaled in today's English-speaking theater". In the country-house play tradition, Arcadia begins in 1809 in the schoolroom of Sidley Park, the seat of the Coverly family, where Lord and Lady Croom are entertaining a set of poets and intellectuals that includes the historical figure Lord Byron. Episodes alternate in Sidley Park between 1809-1812 and the present, nearly two centuries later, among the Croom descendants. The plot interweaves elements of the murder mystery with bedroom farce, here a situation comedy about marital discord over remodeling the family garden. Stoppard displays his fascination with chaos theory, which his characters bring to bear on their arguments over such subjects as Newtonian determinism and the Classic versus the Romantic. The teenage prodigy Thomasina Coverly tries to prove Fermat's Last Theorem, a legendary problem in mathematics. Although the proof had eluded science since the seventeenth century, a solution was coincidentally announced a few months after the opening of Arcadia. The landscape format and fold-out illustrations are an allusion to the presentation books of the garden designer Humphrey Repton, referred to in the stage directions for the play. The illustrations show the reader the larger setting for the play, exterior to the stage set, referred to but unseen by the audience. The illustrations are presented in an unusual manner, allowing the book to be displayed with all four illustrations on view at once while pages from the dialogue are open as well. This device also allows the reader to follow the changes in the physical setting for the play, the landscape of Sidley Park in Derbyshire, over two hundred and sixty years. The introductory essay is by Diana Ketcham. Her introduction elucidates the intellectual debate that runs through Arcadia, and in a section entitled "Notes on the Landscape" she identifies the fashions in the English garden over the period covered by the play. ___POSTAGE: Please note that this is an unusually heavy set and additional postage may apply; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Description
Philadelphia, 1860. Album measuring 6 ¼ x 5 ¼ inches. Wear and tearing to binding, images excellent, a few empty spaces in albums though no evidence of removal such as annotations, etc., very good condition overall. With thirteen cartes-de-visite and thirty-four tintypes, most of the CDVs with identifications of Philadelphia photographers to verso and one image showing the Gurney and Son studio at 707 Broadway. Very Good. A compelling album of images of Irish-American immigrants in Philadelphia in the 1860s. We cannot identify precisely which Kate Mulligan the album belonged to, as several Kate Mulligans with plausible genealogical records exist. The album is an uncommon survival in complete, unbroken form, and several of the portraits are quite compelling. The album includes an image of Father John Kelly, who we assume to be the founder of the Saint Malachy Church in North Philadelphia, which was founded in 1850 and would match the time period. The photographs in traditional dress provide a compelling visual landscape of Irish-American immigrants from the period. On balance we believe the album to be assembled in the late 1860s, though we cannot give a specific date as none of the photographs are dated and the nature of album assembly makes it difficult to pin down exactly. The biggest clue may be the inclusion of one image taken by Gurney and Son in their 707 Broadway Studio, which was in use from the 1860s until their move to 5th Avenue in 1869. Other clues follow. John Kelly’s tenure began in 1860 and this appears to be a young picture of him. Among the photographic backmarks are the Mahan and Keller firm, with the 1427 Ridge Avenue address being different from their address listed in the 1876 trade literature. One backstamp is for the photographer Oliver Boudrias DeMorat, who was active from the 1850s onward. One photograph has the backstamp of A.M. Gorman, identical to a photograph held at the Getty which they dated to 1865-1870.

Dayton, 1910. Broadside on newsprint measuring 19 x 7 ½ inches. Fine condition. Fine. An unrecorded broadside advertising two products - called Victory Bullets and Victory Powders - to help stop smoking. The company, a Victory Remedy Co., of which we find several records circa 1910, guarantees the products’ success. The broadside, printed in the style of a newspaper, shows a series of fictitious horrors committed by smokers, with macabre illustrations. Some of the episodes involve death from tobacco use directly, the others warm of boy murderers, shooters, insanity from smoking, and a farmer who is stricken with ‘tobacco heart.’ As the scientific research on smoking was clearly not very advanced at this point, the broadside is an uncommon example of anti-smoking advertising, which would of course become much more common later in the twentieth century.

He was a professor of medicine in London, Superintendant of the female department of the Hanwell Asylum, and a respected member of various medical societies in Paris, New York, and London. He was also known for "doing everything in his power" to establish ways of more humane treatment of the insane.

Description
octavo, 4 pages, approximately four hundred words, in fine clean, and legible condition. A revealing post-Civil War Letter, by George B. Loring1, written to then U.S. Vice President Henry Wilson2, (1812-1875), author of History of the Rise and Fall of the Slave Power in America and Radical Reconstructionist. George Bailey Loring, Salem doctor, Massachusetts legislator, and U.S. Commissioner of Agriculture, was a Democrat who in 1864 supported Lincoln and became a leader in the Republican Party. His conversion, entitled: Another life-long Democrat testifies to the truth!! Patriotic Letter, was published as a broadside. Loring encloses a copy (no longer present) presumably for Wilson's work then in progress with an insistent reminder of "the condition of affairs in this country when I made up my mind to do this," he rebuts the charge that he changed sides only when he was convinced of Lincoln's re-election and a swift military victory: "My dear General: I told you some weeks ago I would send you my letter supporting President Lincoln for re-election in 1864. I enclose it herewith. I also told you I would remind you of the condition of affairs in this country when I made up my mind to do this, because I have been charged with having been convinced of Mr. Lincoln's election & of the ultimate & rapid victory of the North before I gave the republican party my support. As to the political condition of 1864 - you cannot have forgotten it. Mr. Greeley's propositions of peace, the universal fears of the republican party that Mr. Lincoln's Clifton House proposition would defeat it - the toil & doubt of the campaign, you must well remember. I do; & I remember also the assurance of victory everywhere expressed by democrats, during the long summer campaign, even to the very day of election. In military matters also, that was one of the gloomiest of all the seasons of the war. In May the battles of the Wilderness were raging - and the Union armies were overwhelmed with disaster. Sherman was toiling in Tennessee. Sigel was laboring in vain in the Shenandoah Valley. On June 6th of 1864 , the disaster at Cold Harbor fell upon the country. June 18th the disaster of Petersburg occurred. Maryland was invaded by Early. Week after week the Army of the Potomac lay idle. The horror of the defeat at Fort Pillow occurred. Forrest invaded Tennessee & Kentucky. Along the coast disaster attended our arms - Not until September did Sherman reach Atlanta; nor had at that time Thomas's campaign around Nashville commenced. The cloud was heavy. Almost everybody despaired. And it was absolutely necessary to convince the American people that the cause was not lost. At this time Mr. Greeley wrote his letter in the Manchester Guardian that the North had no more men & no more money to carry on the war. At this time I wrote the enclosed letter. Now mark the difference - & let the people be just Let History be just at any rate ..." 1. Dictionary of American Biography, volume VI, pp., 417-418 2. Description
Cuba and The Philippines, 1919. Good +. 72 loose photographs measuring from 1½” x 2½” to 2½” x 4½” and 24 are captioned on versos. Generally good plus to very good plus. This is a group of photographs which document an unidentified marine's life in Cuba and the Philippines around 1919. He was likely with the 114th Company of the United States Marines as that's the unit of one of the men identified here; their barracks at Dos Rios is identified as well. We see the Philippine Trust Building in Manila which was used as a Red Cross shelter, Santo Tomas, and thatched huts which acted as barracks. Several shots show Marines posing with locals, there are a few interesting street scenes, several show men on ship, and there's a large group shot of marines, presumably the 114th. There are also several shots of training and men at Parris Island, a great image of a cemetery, and a couple showing a plane. In Cuba, we see the Consular Office, mills and marine guard tents, rail yards, a sugar plantation, men shoveling coal at Guantanamo Bay, and Morro Castle.

Description
New York: Delacorte Press, 1972. Red printed wrappers, a bit sunned, otherwise an excellent copy. Uncorrected proof copy of the first American edition, translated by Ralph Manheim. Céline’s third novel offers a vivid chronicle of a desperate man’s frantic flight from France in the final months of World War II. Accompanied by his wife, their cat, and an actor friend, the narrator leaves Paris for Baden-Baden (a World War II hideaway for wealthy Germans), is then sent to a bombed-out Berlin, and finally leaves for Denmark in search of the gold he had stashed there prior to the war. This autobiographical novel captures the chaos of war and the toll it plays on men with documentary realism.
