Lacking a fold-out map of the United States. Bound in contemporary brown calf, with stitching to inside of boards, black ink lettering to spine, three 19th century "Foster Manton Library" ink stamps (on verso of frontispiece, verso of map facing p. 172, and p. 141), and some notes in ink to front free endpaper and title page. Very good, with toning to spine, small split to top of front spine joint, heavy scuffing to binding, large chip to top left of rear board, small chip to top right corner of front board, light spotting and staining to pages, and some pages with minor nicks or creases. Overall, a unique look at the state of the world - particularly the United States just 20 years after its birth - at the close of the 18th century. ESTC W28476. In the "Outlines" section at the beginning of Universal Geography Made Easy, Charles Smith (1768 - 1808) claims that he wrote the book "to give young minds a general idea of Geography … It contains a comprehensive view of the several parts of the globe, and a general description of the countries, belonging to each part, alphabetically arranged." The "North America" section (pp. 125 -171) contains a wide variety of information related to the continent, such as lists of major quadrupeds, birds, and fish, overviews of major lakes, mountains, rivers, agriculture, commerce, government, religions, territories, individual states, and more. Smith writes, "North America is divided into three grand divisions, viz. British dominions, at the north; Spanish possessions, at the south; and the United States of America in the middle" (p. 125). In 1795, Spain owned much of today's United States, including California, Louisiana (west of the Mississippi to the Rockies), Texas, Florida, and New Mexico. At that time, the states in the United States numbered only fifteen. In 1803, the Louisiana Purchase would roughly double the size of the United States. On the map of North America (facing p. 125), the modern-day United States is divided up into four broad sections - California, "Mexico or New Spain," Louisiana, and the United States - with some specific states labeled as well, like New York and Philadelphia. . Image depicts street vendors with awnings drawn, lined up along empty Orchard Street in New York City's Lower East Side. A bright print, fine condition. Matted in white, in a sleek black wood frame. Ogle Winston Link was an American photographer, best known for his railroad photography and as a pioneer of nighttime photography. After receiving his degree in civil engineering from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn in 1937, Link began to work at Carl Byoir's public relations firm as a commercial photographer, and transitioned into photographing military machinery during World War II. Link photographed Orchard Street in 1946, shortly after opening his own New York City studio, which focused on public relations photography. The original photograph was printed and copyrighted in 1949, and this 1990 impression was printed from the same, original 1946 negative. Orchard Street was printed using the gelatin silver process, the most common method for making black and white photographs since the 1890s. The printing process, first introduced in 1871 by Richard Leach Maddox, involves creating an image of metallic silver embedded in a gelatin coating. Due to the sensitivity of the materials used to make them, gelatin silver prints are prone to toning and discoloration, increasing the rarity of fine quality prints.. Gelatin silver Photograph. Publisher's royal blue cloth titled in red to spine. 245pp. Slightly shaken in its binding, bumped and scufed to spine ends and corners, with some light surface wear and soiling to the boards, the most notable defect is a small, shallow scrap to the fore-edge of the front board, exposing the board beneath the cloth; internally clean and fresh, signed to the front free endpaper by both Haywood, and Jack Stachel. A good copy of a significant work, cosmetically a trifle unappealing, but structurally solid. A child of enslaved peoples, Haywood joined the American Communist Party and became a notable writer and speaker on the theory of the African American struggle. He wrote detailed first hand accounts of the Scottsboro trials, the 1919 Chicago riots, and on a number of other subjects related to the experiences of people of color. This text is possibly the first truly comprehensive piece of writing on the "Negro Question" by an African American reformer and Marxist. Haywood was a committed believer in the movement calling for an autonomous African American nation. He was expelled from the CPUSA in 1958 for his refusal to abandon his staunchly Stalinist ideology; following his expulsion, Haywood adopted an increasingly Maoist line, eventually helping to found the Maoist New Communist Movement in the mid-1960s. As well as being signed by Haywood, this copy is additionally signed by Jack Stachel, a prominent labor activist, key member of the CPUSA, and a frequent colleague and collaborator with Earl Browder, the CPUSA's General Secretary who, among many other things, was an agent and recruiter for the Soviet Union's espionage efforts. Copies of this important work signed by Haywood are scarce, and the additional signature of Stachel is an interesting association.

A grouping of ephemera related to the New England Music Camp spanning the years 1939 and 1955, including five (5) printed programs (each approx. 6.25" by 4") and one (1) photographically illustrated advertising brochure (9" by 6", pp. [12], in original printed wrappers). The brochure includes photos of the camp grounds, happy campers performing in the band and orchestra, and a variety of recreation including water sports and horseback riding. Camp fees and suggested packing lists are included, as well as a tear-away mail-order application. The New England Music Camp (NEMC) was founded in 1937 by Dr. Paul E. Wiggin and his wife Nina as a non-profit summer camp devoted to cultivating music education among children and teens. It is still in operation today, and is still directed by Wiggin family members.

Philadelphia, PA: University of Pennsylvania, 1877. Crease fold in one corner. Water stains on front.. A matriculation certificate and ticket for admission for Dudley L. Page from the University of Pennsylvania authorizing him to attend their Medical Department for the 1877 session. The certificate is dated January 2, 1877, and signed by the Robert E. Rogers (1813-1884), who served as Dean to the Medical Department, now known as the School of Medicine, from 1856-1877. The certificate is printed on a light pink card, and features two black and white illustrations of different buildings on the university's campus. The first of which appears to be the Medical Hall and is now know as Claudia Cohen Hall. The second building most likely was original Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, first built in 1874, which was later demolished so that a new university hospital could be build on the same site. On the back of the certificate it states "This ticket admits the Matriculate to the University of Hospital Clinics for the Session 1876-77". Note: The first name of the student Page appears to be spelled "Dudly" on the certificate, but newspapers listing the graduates of the school in 1879, have it as "Dudley". Single page, double sided. 1899. NA. Matting. Very Good. A piece of ephemera whose interest lies not in its content but rather its embrace of Japonisme. It is especially telling that it does so in a communication in which it would seem doing so in all likelihood would be utterly superfluous as well as irrelevant to the message. We do recognize that the unidentified company may have had a strong nexus with Japan in its business, whether its location or presence, a roster of Japanese suppliers or customers and/or a specialization in fabrics associated with Japan in some way, whether material, pattern, etc., but even if that were the case, we find the choice of stationary bazarre. The letter measures 27 by 19 cm, and it is matted with a matt whose margins are 4 cm wide on the side, 5 cm top and bottom, making the whole matt 35.5 by 26 cm. The basic content of the letter is printed, excepting the signature which appears to be done by hand, and reads as follows: "We beg to announce that Mr. F. W. Hall (Formerly with City Mills Company) is now in charge of FELT DEPARTMENT We thank you for past favors and hope for a continuance of same. Very truly yours, Josh Wild [indecipherable short scribble) December, 1899." In our admittedly cursory Google search, we have located a City Mills Company based in Massachusetts in the late 19th Century, but given the generic character of such a business name, we can't say this was the company named in the letter, and in any event, it is a company that Mr. Hall had left, not the company issuing this letter. Regardless, as we have already maintained, it is the aesthetics of the letter, not its textual content, that are of significance. So the Japanisme aesthetic is evident in several ways. The most obvious is the illustrations of Japanese women and a boy and a girl in traditional garb, a cherry tree arching branch which is acting as a partial border, and not to be slighted, a cat holding up a branch from a cherry tree, this last a nice touch that plays into the Japanese passion for cats. Also, suspended from the branch at the top of the sheet are five canceled Japanese stamps. Finally, the thin paper is just the type used in many a Japanese publication of the era. Condition: a moderate amount of foxing and uneven light browning of the paper. The paper has three folds, now flattened, which suggest that the paper was folded neatly into a smallish envelope back when. The letter, thankfully, is rather loosely attached to the matting. The matting is off-white and in our view, somewhat drab but certainly functional. It is age toned lightly around its edges, and has some minor edge wear, which would be concealed if framed. But chances are an owner wishing to frame the letter, and it certainly deserves to be displayed thus, would replace the matting.

An advertisement for Paine's Celery Compound, the booklet was designed to bolster the sales of an already-popular quack remedy - the first ever celery-based product on the market. According to the "Encyclopedia of Pseudoscience," it was developed in the mid-1870s by the Wells, Richardson & Company in Burlington - a partnership between several Civil War veterans. Apart from celery, the recipe also contained hops, alcohol, and coca (cocaine) and purportedly offered permanent cure for all kinds of nervous diseases. Besides history and testimonials of the effectiveness of the compound, the booklet listed, , and illustrated described the greatest crusades, the great wonders of America, the greatest ships and bridges, etc. Quite unusual, with OCLC showing only 4 holdings at institutions.
