Description
New York: Works Publishing Company, 1939. First edition. Near Fine. A very Nearly Fine copy of the book. Spine gilt a trifle dulled and a small ding to one corner. Previous owner's name on the front end paper in pencil, "Wm M Jefferson," otherwise unmarked internally. One of approximately 5,000 first edition copies, and uncommon in this condition. Housed in a custom leather clamshell case. First published in 1939, Alcoholics Anonymous: The Story of How More Than One Hundred Men Have Recovered from Alcoholism has become one of the most popular books of all time, selling more than thirty million copies and inspiring one of America's most enduring social movements. William Griffith Wilson, also known as Bill W., and Robert "Dr. Bob" Smith were inspired to write the "Big Book" by their own paths to sobriety, a method that would later become known as the "twelve-step program." The Big Book has since been translated into numerous languages and was designated by the Library of Congress as one of the eighty-eight books that shaped America. "Lest this title should arouse the risibles in any reader let me state that the general thesis of Alcoholics Anonymous is more soundly based psychologically than any other treatment of the subject I have ever come upon. And it is a subject not to be neglected, for, irrespective of whether we live under repeal or prohibition, there will be alcohol addicts, precisely as there are drug addicts" (contemporary New York Times review). Near Fine.

Description
Birmingham or Sheffield, 1770. Oblong folio. 390 x 220 mm. (15 1/4 x 8 3/4 inches). Vellum spine over decorative blue paper wrappers, paper label with title in Italian on upper board and ink title in Italian on spine. Paper stock toned with age, a few leaves with staining in the margin, otherwise in good condition. Silversmith model book, containing 80 full-page engravings of candles sticks and holders, candelabra, pitchers, plates, salt and pepper shakers, serving utensils, silverware, and other household pieces. Each image is beautifully and careful engraved, with rich detail and ornamentation. Each includes a printed product number as well as one in ink with a different item number and a price. Although there is no title-page or signatures of engravers, this large sales catalogue appears to be English as some of the engravings have English words of explanation engraved in the text. The binding is definitely Italian, and the paper label is in an Italian hand. The watermark is a "fleur de lis" pattern suggesting an international company manufacturing the silver. There were only a few English companies with the capacity to export at this time, including silver works in Sheffield and Birmingham both of which by 1770's had established networks of dealers selling their wares across the continent. This catalogue, with specific Italian connections is very unusual and suggests the scope of the business had reached export capacity by the third quarter of the century. The most important Italian silver makers at this time were Giardini of Rome and Venuti of Naples. .

Description
12/12/97. Colin Powell was Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff throughout the Bush presidency. During that time, he worked closely with the President on almost a daily basis, and oversaw 28 crises, including the invasion of Panama in 1989 to remove General Manuel Noriega from power and Operation Desert Storm in the 1991 Persian Gulf War. Powell was Secretary of State for Bush’s son George W. during his first term, in which the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq took place.Sarwar A. Kashmeri is a specialist and commentator on U.S.-European relations, and fellow of the Foreign Policy Association. He is the author of “America and Europe After 9/11 and Iraq: The Great Divide”, and “NATO 2.0: Reboot or Delete?”, in which he provides insights into NATO and the future of the transatlantic alliance. In his travels and research, he has met, interviewed and worked with numerous world leaders, including British prime ministers Margaret Thatcher and John Major, and U.S. President George H.W. Bush. He maintained a correspondence with the latter over the course of years. The Theodore Roosevelt Association promotes TR’s ideals and legacies, with a particular emphasis on America’s youth, and supports the Theodore Roosevelt Collection and the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Fund at the American Museum of Natural History. It also consults and collaborates with the National Park Service on the use of endowed funds for the Roosevelt Birthplace and Sagamore Hill. It awards a Distinguished Service Medal on an annual basis, and in 1997 it was proposed to give the 1998 to Colin Powell. Kashmeri wrote Bush seeking his support for the effort, and received it.Autograph letter signed, on the inside of a Christmas card, Houston, December 12, 1997, to Kashmeri. “I will be glad to ‘second the motion’ to Colin Powell regarding his selection to the TR award. He is truly a ‘fitting’ recipient. Warm regards and have a great Christmas.” It comes with the envelope and a photograph of the Bush clan that the former president enclosed.Ironically, the 1998 award ended up going to Bush himself.

Munich: E. Stahl, 1861. First Edition. Very good. 8vo. xiv, 424 pp. Original quarter sheep (leather suffed but the binding is perfectly sound; extremities worn). Contemporary inscription on title-page: "H.D. Tuncker, Ep. Altonensis" (i.e. Altona, outside Hamburg). NOT ex-library! SCARCE TREATISE ON MARRIAGE, "ADAPTED FOR THE USE OF AMERICAN CLERGYMEN," WRITTEN BY AN EARLY GERMAN EMIGRANT TO WISCONSIN. ONE COPY IN AMERICA LOCATED. From the Preface, we learn that the work "is intended primarily for missionary priests who perform the care of souls in these American provinces [...]. For this reason I have not only explained in more detail the individual impediments of marriage in the second and third tract, but also through many practical questions which occurred to me, especially those which are peculiar to the condition of this region [i.e. America]. To the same end, in the fourth treatise, a further distinction is made concerning the dispensation of impediments and the revalidation of marriage [...]. In the fifth chapter [...] I have recorded the things which are to be observed in the celebration of marriage [i.e. nuptials], so that everything is carried out piously and religiously." (Translation ours). Heiss then give a list of thirty works that "almost never left my hands" while writing this book. Heiss added two Appendices: the first illustrates fifty-seven practical cases concerning marriage, including consanguinity, impotence, criminality, insantity, non-consummation, virginity (or lack thereof), etc. The second appendix presents guides for writing letters about matrimonial causes and dispensations. Michael Heiss (1818-1890) was a German-born American Roman Catholic clergyman and educator. He arrived in America in 1842 and was assigned to the diocese of Covington, Kentucky, where he remained until 1844, at which time he accompanied Bishop John Henni to Milwaukee. He acted in the capacity as Pastor for the Germans of St. Mary's, Milwaukee, and visited missions within a radius of fifty miles. He was the first rector of St. Francis Seminary, St. Francis, Wisconsin (1856-1868), an institution which he helped to found and in which he taught theology, canon law, and scripture. He was the first bishop of the Diocese of La Crosse, Wisconsin, which he served from 1868 to 1880. In the next year he was appointed archbishop of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee which he served until his death. The University of Wisconsin-Madison has a microfilm only. Only one copy in America has been located, namely GWU Jacob Burns Law Library. From the Dorothy Sloan Collection of Women in the West.

Description
1823. [Western Americana] Letter of Colonel Bomford on Ordnance Duty to The Secretary of War Relative to the Number of Arms Required Annually to Supply the Militia of the West. House of Representatives: Washington, 1823. Printed Pamphlet totals 6 pages. Measures 5.75 x 8.75 inches. When the United States Army was reorganized in 1821, the Ordnance and Artillery Departments were merged with Colonel Comford promoted to full colonel and attached to the artillery. In 1823 the United States was fighting the Arikara Indians in the first plains Indian War and asserting control of the Western Hemisphere against further colonization by European powers. This text breaks down cost and quantity of artillery required by Bomford to support military efforts in the American west. The Arikara War of 1823 is widely recognized as the first military conflict between the United States and a Native American nation on the Great Plains. This conflict specifically occurred in the Upper Missouri River region, in what is present-day South Dakota. Toning around edges does not affect text. Front page detached. Text is clean. Overall very good condition.

Description
London: Michael Joseph, 1965. First Edition. Octavo, blue boards (hardcover), map illustrated endpapers, gilt letters, [181] pp. Very Good+, with bookplate and shadowing to endpapers, in a Good, mylar protected dust jacket with edgewear. From dust jacket: Malta 1942 -- a thousand miles from friends, isolated, besieged, blitzed, bombed, desperately short of oil, ammunition, ships, aircraft, fuel, slowly being starved into surrender... Into that hopeless situation, token of the British attitude that attack is the best defence, fly two Wellington aircraft equipped with secret long-range radar. Their role is to find enemy convoys proceeding at night from Italy to Africa, and to lead a tiny naval force of cruiser and destroyer through the darkness on to the unsuspecting target. One is captained by a dedicated R.A.F. pilot, the other by a typical twenty-one year old. Hastily trained, carefree, unwarlike, Peter Forrester is unwillingly pitchforked into this island of heroes and heroines, for it is here he meets miranda Blake, daughter of a naval captain and a plotter in Barracca H.Q. Round these two, a love story develops, paralleled by the narrative of an important enemy convoy leaving Palermo. The fate of both is inevitably interwined -- the idyll of the lovers among the cool shadlows of the ancient citadel, on the beaches and in the flower-filled fields, set against a background of bursting flak, of shot-down aircraft, of shps stealthyly leaving harbour and slipping off into the darkness, culminating in the fantastic crescendo of a night battle at sea. Far from being the usual tight-lipped R.A.F. story, this novel is delicately balanced between love and war, between humour and sadness, between aircraft and ships, between guns and gardens. And since it was inspired by Paul Stanton’s own experiences there, the book brings vividly back to life the exciting story of the Second Siege of Malta.
