Description
London: Bloomsbury, 1999 English deluxe edition. One of 7,500 copies. Publisher's blue boards stamped in gilt, front board with color illustration by Cliff Wright, all edges gilt, blue endpapers, and green bookmark ribbon. Near fine, with light toning to spine and margins of pages. Overall, a vibrant copy. Errington A2(e). The second volume of the Harry Potter series, this novel follows Harry and his friends during their second year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry as they investigate the recently re-opened Chamber of Secrets. Notably, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets foreshadows many of the series' future developments, especially the relationship between Harry and Lord Voldemort that is particularly expanded upon in the sixth novel, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. The English deluxe editions were created by Bloomsbury to cater to the gift market. By the time the third book, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, was published, the Harry Potter series was well established, cementing itself in publishing history. As explained by Nigel Newton of Bloomsbury, the need for gift editions of Harry Potter was self-explanatory: "…if you think of any of the great children's classics, there would tend to be a really nice edition. Harry Potter deserves it more than anything we've ever published." Although the exact date of publication is uncertain, it is possible that the first deluxe editions of Philosopher's Stone, Chamber of Secrets, and Prisoner were all published on the same date, September 27th, 1999.. English Deluxe Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine.
