Description
Low Countries [probably Bruges], ca. 1470-80. 186 x 135 mm. (7 3/8 x 5 1/4"). Single column, 20 lines in a gothic book hand. i (blank), 108, i (blank) leaves (bound too tightly for a close collation, but APPARENTLY COMPLETE). Contents: Calendar (f. 1r); Gospel Lessons (f. 7r); Hours of the Holy Cross (f. 11r); Hours of the Holy Spirit (f. 15r); Mass of the Virgin (18r); "Obsecro te" (f. 21r); "O Intemerata" (f. 23r); Suffrages (f. 24r); Hours of the Virgin (f. 33r); Office of the Virgin as said throughout Advent (f. 71r); Penitential Psalms (f. 76r); Litany and petitions (f. 81v); Office of the Dead (f. 87r). HANDSOME RENAISSANCE ENTRELAC BINDING (upper joint and parts of spine very skillfully repaired), covers with a gilt floral border surrounding a central panel of gilt strapwork design with traces of original polychrome painting, raised bands, spine gilt in compartments, original bosses and catchplates (clasps renewed), all edges gilt. Rubrics in red, numerous one-line initials in blue with red penwork, or gold with dark purple penwork, many two-line initials in burnished gold on pink and blue ground with white highlights, most of these with floral sprays extending into the margins, 22 SMALL MINIATURES (measuring approximately 45 x 37 mm.), each with panel borders of colorful acanthus and flowers at the top and bottom of the page, connected by a strand of gilt bezants, and 14 FULL-PAGE MINIATURES, each surrounded by a full border of acanthus, flowers, and bezants, the facing pages also with full borders and a large six-line initial painted pink or blue, filled with swirling vines and flowers, on gilt and painted ground. Subjects of the large miniatures being: Crucifixion (f. 10v); Pentecost (f. 14v); Virgin and Child (f. 17v); Annunciation (f. 32v); Visitation (f. 42v); Nativity (f. 49v); Annunciation to the Shepherds (f. 52v); Adoration of the Magi (f. 55v); Presentation in the Temple (f. 58v); Massacre of the Innocents (f. 61v); Flight into Egypt (f. 66v); Coronation of the Virgin (f. 70v); David in Prayer (f. 75v); Raising of Lazarus (f. 86v). Front pastedown with a 16th century inscription (see below); rear pastedown with a 17th century ownership inscription in ink, signed François le Paige. Lower joint a bit rubbed, margins with a little soiling and occasional wrinkle, fore-edge border rule just grazed by binder in a few places (the other borders quite ample), miniatures with tiny chips, light fading or rubbing in a couple places, etc., but IN EXCELLENT CONDITION, the attractive period binding very well preserved, with boards showing virtually no signs of wear, the vellum generally clean and bright, and the miniatures fresh and richly colored. This is an extensively illustrated Book of Hours preserved in an especially attractive early binding, with richly colored miniatures attributed to the Master of Philip of Cleves' "Book of the Hunt." Active in the Low Countries from approximately 1470-90, this artist was patronized by some of the area's wealthiest elite, and is known to have collaborated with another important illuminator called the Bruges Master of 1482. Some trademarks of our painter include faces with subtle blue shading; high, arched eyebrows; thin golden halos; and women with very straight, shoulder-length hair highlighted with strands of gold. Outdoor scenes often contain narrative elements in the distance, such as the figures of a young David and Goliath in the miniature of King David at Prayer, or pagan idols dropping from a column in the Flight into Egypt, recalling a popular apocryphal tale of pagan relics miraculously falling to pieces as the Holy Family passes by. Some miniatures of note (in addition to these two) are the Raising of Lazarus for the Office of the Dead--a popular alternative to funeral images, particularly among Flemish illuminators--and the Massacre of the Innocents for the hour of Vespers, a particularly violent episode in which King Herod commands his soldiers to slaughter the male infants of Bethlehem. Like other miniatures in this work, the action in these scenes is spread out between the fore, middle, and background, creating a multi-layered narrative that invites the eye to explore and meditate. The artist's color palette in this manuscript is quite memorable, and includes a bright mustard yellow, pale green, and cherry blossom pink. The Coronation of the Virgin makes particularly strong use of color, with a sunset-like gradient giving way to billowy blue clouds. The Annunciation miniature also demonstrates the Master's facility with color; here, the Angel Gabriel's red and green wings are fully extended, while the Virgin is radiant against a golden yellow wall covering. In addition to the large compositions, we are treated to 22 smaller miniatures depicting the Evangelists and saints, each of which is charming in its more confined presentation. Although the saints found in the Suffrages are quite typical for a Book of Hours, the Calendar is another story. Despite being rather sparsely filled out, the calendar here includes several feast days, some of them unusual enough to provide additional insight into the manuscript's localization and use. For example, there is St. Landoaldi (19 March), a missionary to Northern France and Belgium, and St. Winnoc (6 November), the son of a Breton king with a former abbey in the far north of France. The calendar is idiosyncratic in other ways as well, with saints' names that are repeated, and others that are either extremely obscure or whose dates seem to be wrong. Whatever the case, additional research into the calendar would undoubtedly prove revealing. We are fortunate to have some early provenance information written into this Book of Hours. The inscription on the front pastedown reads: "This last day of September 1590 we [name erased, but Claude le Paige] lieutenant of the guards of his highness of Bar le Duc on the one hand and Alix de la Taxe on the other hand have married in front of the holy Catholic church at the place of Mir[e]court." Below this inscription are notes indicating the ages of the bride and groom (17 and 36, respectively), as well as the dates of their deaths: he died on 9 May 1610, and she on 14 September 1622. Located in the strategically important Meuse region in northeastern France, the Duchy of Bar-le-Duc unified with Lorraine in 1480 and became extremely wealthy during the 16th century. Although we do not know for whom the manuscript was originally made, it seems quite possible that it was commissioned for a forebear of the named Bar-le-Duc spouses, and was perhaps passed down through later generations of the family. The signature on the pastedown indicates that François le Paige, son of Claude and Alix, inherited the book from his parents. This manuscript was lavishly and tastefully bound early in the 16th century and has survived in excellent condition to the present day. This binding would originally have been painted, but, even without its original colors, it is still quite attractive, perhaps even splendid. In excellent condition inside and out, the manuscript is a fortunate survival and a testament to generations of careful stewardship..

Description
1945. (WORLD WAR II) KEYES, Geoffrey, Lt. Gen. Archive: Hand-colored and annotated map outlining the division of Germany; 25 contemporary V-Mail letters from Keyes to his wife. Waiblingen-bei-Stuttgart, Germany: 649th Engineer Topographic Battalion, June 1945. Broadside, map measures 22 by 29 inches, titled ""Administrative Map of Western-Germany, June 4, 1945."" V-Mail letters each measure 4-1/4 by 5-1/4 inches. $12,000.Lieutenant General Geoffrey Keyes' unique hand-colored and annotated map outlining the division of Germany per the Berlin Declaration, produced just after Germany's unconditional surrender, along with 25 contemporary letters by Keyes to his wife discussing the dramatic events of these historic times. It was agreed at the Yalta Conference, held in Crimea, February 4-11, 1945, that after the war, Germany would be split into four occupied zones: American, British, French and Russian. On May 7, 1945, Germany signed an unconditional surrender at Allied headquarters in Reims, France, to take effect the following day. The Berlin Declaration of June 5, 1945, confirmed the division of Allied-occupied Germany into four occupation zones according to the Yalta Conference. The map is titled ""Administrative Map / Western-Germany,"" dated ""4 June 1945,"" printed by the 649th Engineer Topographic Battalion (649th Engr. Top. Bn 1945"") in Waiblingen-bei-Stuttgart. The landkreise (rural district), stadtkreis (urban district within landkreis), and land boundaries (made up of adjoining stadtkreis) are noted. Identified with flags, there are three Region Headquarters (Darmstadt, Marburg, Stuttgart) and five R.B. Headquarters (Frankfurt, Kassel, Wiesbaden, Mannheim, Karlsruhe).Eight areas are outlined by hand in various colors. There are 17 landkreis at the western and southern borders of this map which are not outlined. These areas are in the French occupied zone. France was not represented at Yalta and Russia would only agree to a separate French occupation zone ""within the British and American zones."" It is possible that when this map was printed, it was not yet determined if the 17 non-outlined landkreis were American. The four divisions were not confirmed until the Berlin Declaration on June 5, 1945, the day after this map was published. The French zone includes the stadtkreis Baden-Baden and Bavaria. The French zone bordered mostly France and Switzerland, but also small parts of Belgium, Luxembourg, and Austria. (Included is a color photocopy of the four occupied zones indicating the area depicted in the Administrative Map of Western-Germany here offered.)Also present are 25 pages of V-mail, each 4-1/2 by 5-1/4 inches, from Lieutenant General Keyes to his wife, May-August 1945. She was living at the Hotel Tayer, West Point. V-Mail used standardized stationery and microfilm processing to produce lighter, smaller airplane cargo, making space available for war supplies. V-Mail was used from mid-1942 to the end of 1945. Excerpts: ""The capitulation of the Germans yesterday has us all on the hump—just as much so as while we were still fighting… We are still awfully busy even if the fighting has ceased on this front… VE Day!! Now if we can quickly wind up the Jap affair we can really relax… We move to Salzburg this week… Well here we are installed in the Archbishop's Palace sweetheart each room is large enough for a battalion almost… flew to 3d Army to attend the homecoming ceremonies for Gen. Patton. It really was a great show and he was in rare form – Had a nice visit with him… With the approaching end of the Jap war it will certainly be open season on generals!… Sunday is to be a gala day – All the High Commissioners of Austria are gathering and Gen Clark's guests and others are going to the music Festival… just had a call and a concert by the Vienna Boys Choir… This afternoon the No 1 British, French & Russian VIPs are coming to Salzburg as Gen Clark's guests and big festivities are slated…"" From the estate of Lieutenant General Geoffrey Keyes.Map folded into quarters, with a few minor wrinkles, pinholes at corners from posting it on a wall or bulletin board. Near-fine condition, an exceptional archive.

A major resource on Japanese falconry, the capture, taming & teaching of falcons, the grooming, feeding and culture of the bird of prey. Wonderful illustrations of falcons, the associated tools & equipment, stands, methods of warming in winter before the hunt, winter hunting, respect for. On the flushing to expose game birds to be hunted by the falcon, the kill, capture of the quarry. How to tether, hoods, master's gloves and other accoutrements, field work, breeding, bathing &c. . *** FIRST AND ONLY EDITION: This magnificent work was issued once in a single edition and is complete in five separately bound volumes. . The first series consists of volumes 1~3 which were published in 1877. The second series, volumes 4~5 were published in 1879, complete in 5 volumes. . Each volume has identifying title slips with: series 1: volumes jo, chu, ge in 3 parts]; series 2: the supplement jo, ge in 2 parts, according to the traditional Japanese way of numbering each volume. . *** Please read the details of each specific copy below under: "* DETAILS FOR EACH COPY *" . *** PRINTING TECHNIQUE: This marvelous work uses crushed mica flecks as an integral part of the hand-made Washi paper [not found on all copies]. These tiny flecks of mica give a sparkle to the illustrations, and are especially effective on the feather portion of the falcons. Mica gives a realistic and "high-tech" touch to the hand-printed woodblocks. . *** A QUOTE FROM A KAWANABE KYOSAI SCHOLAR: . Per Dr. Shigeru Oikawa, the eminent scholar on Kyosai, in a letter from him to us in 1998, he discusses the dates of the set. He stated: "Takakagami was, I think, first published in 3 volumes with the title...cover was blue or black. Then came the last 2 volumes...this time the...color was yellow. The exact date is not known but the first edition in 3 volumes [first series in vols. 1,2,3,] could be 1860's and some examples of the full set in 5 volumes has the date of 1875. Kyosai had finished all of the drawings in 1860's but the publication seemed to be delayed..." . We have not found any supporting evidence to the above 1875 date, nor are these color covers cited in any bibliographies or other reference books stating any information about any 1875 edition. We have only found the 1877-79 edition. If the 1875 edition actually existed, by now it would have been listed in bibliographies. . *** KAWANABE KYOSAI: ARTIST & AUTHOR: . Per Brown: BLOCK PRINTING AND BOOK ILLUSTRATION, p.196. Kawanabe Kyosai aka.: Gyosai [1831-89] was a Kano painter, printmaker, illustrator, the son of a Samurai. Studied as a child under Utagawa Kuniyoshi, then in Tokyo under Maemura Towa, later under the most celebrated Kano Tohaku Chinshin who gave him the name Toiku at 19 years old. Loved drinking Sake, did some of his best work while under the influence, exhibited a the Vienna Intl. Exposition in 1873 & in Paris in 1883, where the West recognized his greatness. See below. . *** Josiah Conder recognized his great talent & wrote a grand reference book on him: PAINTINGS AND STUDIES, Tokyo 1911. His famous KYOSAI GADEN, [L. Dawes p.92] was widely appreciated in Europe, it even had English captions for the foreign market! This was Kyosai's attempt to show the world a wide variety of ancient Japanese & Chinese painting styles; it is a magnificent set. . *** COLLATION & SPECIAL ILLUSTRATING TECHNIQUES: None of the below reference books list details of a full set which was issued complete in 5 volumes: part 1:3 volumes; part 2: 2 volumes supplement. The full list of the set is found at the end of volume 5 with a list of recent publications, this book is cited in the last column showing both parts 1 & 2 for a complete set in 5 volumes. This title was issued as a serial in 1877,then the supplement in 1879. . *** There are two variants to the paper used to print the pages: mica-flecked Washi [mulberry fiber] hand-made paper. Then the Deluxe example used mica-flecked Washi paper giving a "sparkle and sheen" to the as a background to the illustrations. This has always been a difficult paper to make and an expensive bonus to the edition. Seldom found in books of this period. . *** THE VARIETY OF BIRDS ILLUSTRATED: The Siberian goshawk or [falcon] O-taka [in Japanese] has been considered the best variety for use in falconry in Japan since ancient times. The Chinese call these birds Lao Ying. . * RARITY: Seldom found complete. For odd volumes of the set, please see our book number 450250, posted to our website. . *** Color photos are posted to our website. . *** . * DETAILS FOR EACH SPECIFIC COPY: * . Copy 2: A COMPLETE set of 5 volumes. . Bound in the publisher's yellow 'laid' paper covered boards, with red-printed title slips. . This copy has some of the usual slight darkening to volume 1 covers, with some darkening to the title slip which is printed in red. Signs of rubbing, dustiness, edge & corner wear, nevertheless tightly stitched and firmly bound. The contents are brilliantly clean, no marks or issues. This is a uniform complete set of matching volumes and was NOT made up from random odd volumes. We tend to be overly critical of condition, suffice to say this is in much better than the average example now approaching 150 years old. By and large a decent set, complete as issued. Please see our website photo cover.jpg for the covers to this item Note our scanner found it difficult to show actual color values. . * There is some of the usual slight wrinkling to the cover paper, small rubs, unusual minor signs of wear, feint stain, and the like. . We tend to be over critical, suffice to say this set is by and large in excellent condition for a book nearly 150 years old. . This is a uniform set, with cloth-covered inside spine corner of purple silk cloth intact [but a little rubbed as usual]. This is NOT a set made up from random odd volumes. . Please see our website photo spine.jpg for the covers to this item Note our scanner found it difficult to show actual color values. . *** REFERENCE & BIBLIOGRAPHY: . N. Description
UMBERTO ECO'S FIRST BOOK GIUSEPPE FLORES D'ARCAIS'S COPY 4to (250x176 mm). 157, [3] pages. Original publisher's wrappers. A good copy, uncut and mostly unopened, leaves slightly uniformly browned. Provenance: Giuseppe Flores d'Arcais, considered the founder of the school of personalized pedagogy (his large signature on the front cover and the label of his library on the spine). First edition of the first book by the famous Italian semiotician and novelist Umberto Eco. Il problema estetico in San Tommaso consists of an enlargement of Eco's thesis developed with the historian and philosopher Luigi Pareyson (1918-1981) on the theme of the complex and original aesthetic theories advanced by the influential medieval thinker Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274). Umberto Eco, a native of Alexandria, graduated in 1954 from the University of Turin with a thesis on St. Thomas Aquinas. After teaching at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Milan, at the Faculty of Architecture in Florence and at the Polytechnic of Milan, in 1975 he was appointed professor of semiotics at the University of Bologna. Eco was awarded many honorary titles by universities from all over the world. Since 1989 he was the president of the International Center for Semiotic and Cognitive Studies and since 1994 of the International Association for Semiotic Studies. Contributor to many Italian newspapers and magazines such as "Il Corriere della Sera", "La Repubblica" and "L'Espresso", in his long career and vast bibliography he dealt in particular with aesthetics, artistic avant-garde, linguistics, and mass communication. After the extraordinary success of his debut novel Il nome della rosa (1980), Eco published other works of fiction, among which Foucault's Pendulum (1988), The Island of the Day Before (1994), Baudolino (2000), and The Prague Cemetery (2010) (cf. P.E. Bondanella, The Cambridge Companion to Umberto Eco, Cambridge, 2013; S.G. Beardsworth & R.E. Auxier, eds., The philosophy of Umberto Eco, Chicago, 2017). Giuseppe Flores d'Arcais (1908-2004) was among the pioneers in the teaching of the history of entertainment and audiovisuals. Graduating from Padua with a degree in musical aesthetics in 1929, Flores d'Arcais, who joined Fascism as a young man, was not only a professor of pedagogy but also of didactics, aesthetics, philosophy, history of theater, of which he held one of the first chairs in Italy (1959-1972), and method and didactics of audiovisual arts until his retirement (1983). He greatly contributed to giving didactic dignity to the disciplines of entertainment, radio communication and cinema, to whose interaction he dedicated his first course "The Problem of Relations between Cinema and Theater". He gave equal space to the history of theater and cinema, supplementing courses on Luigi Pirandello and the birth of filmaking with sections devoted to the European cinema between 1930 and 1960 or Neorealism. He was a full member of the Accademia Patavina di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti, and a corresponding member of the Istituto Veneto. In addition to his many pedagogical writings, mention should also be made of Il film nella scuola (1963) and Note per una estetica del cinema (in: "Rivista del cinematografo", 1, 1953, pp. 6-10) (cf. A.M. Bernardinis, Scritti di Giuseppe Flores D'Arcais, in: "Studi in onore di Giuseppe Flores d'Arcais", Padua, 1985, pp. XXXVII-LXXVII). Considering that Eco and Flores d'Arcais knew each other well and copies of later Eco's pubblications bearing Eco's dedication to him are known, it is possible that Eco himself gave this copy to Flores d'Arcais, but did not dedicate it to him as at the time the latter was already a reknown professor while Eco had graduated from university only a few years earlier. Description
4to (214x152 mm). [8], 135, [1] leaves. Collation: *4 †4 a-z4 A-L4. With the large woodcut portrait of the author on the title page and the printer's device on last leaf verso. Contemporary limp vellum, inked title on the spine and lower edge, remnants of ties (new endpapers, small stains). On title page manuscript ownership's inscription Ballybay Library. Inner margin of the title page reinforced, small holes to the gutter of the first two leaves with no loss of text, small ink stain on the upper blank margin at the end of the volume, otherwise a very good genuine copy. FIRST COMPLETE EDITION. First published in Bologna in 1546, containing only seventy-two chapters, the Ricordi appeared in an enlarged edition in 1549 (124 chapters) also in Bologna. The present, definitive, edition containing 133 'ricordi' was edited by Zaccaria Bellenghi, Fra Sabba's chaplain in Faenza, shortly after the latter's death. The work became very popular and between 1546 and 1613 twenty-five editions were published. In the present edition is also found for the first time the title woodcut showing Fra Sabba in his study. Ugo Rozzo (Lo studiolo nella silografia italiana, 1479-1558, Udine, 1998, pp. 90, 114), deems this frontispiece to be remarkable for the mid-sixteenth century both for its Hospitaller imagery and its display of books within the study. The woodcut is emblematic of Sabba's monastic life conducted within the Order's parameters of social utility. He presents an iconographic image of the devout humanist knight who prefers the tranquility of his Commenda to the bustle of the city (see also D. Thornton, The Scholar in his Study: Ownership and Experience in Renaissance Italy, New Haven, CT, 1997, pp. 106-114). The work consists of two series of "avvertimenti" (advices), each closely related to Castiglione's initial idea of providing to his grandnephew Bartolomeo Righi useful hints on how to become a perfect knight Hospitaller, but its numerous printings in the sixteenth century and its breadth of scope suggest a wider target audience. The other 'ricordi', were developed into true small treatises or essays, that Castiglione expanded and augmented in every new edition. Despite not having a wide-ranging extent, nevertheless they present a considerable interest, especially when compared to the works of contemporaries on the same topics, i.e. the life of a courtier, the government of a city, the prince and the tyrant, men of arms and religion, marriage, how to decorate a house, clothes, food and drink, physical exercise, travel, etc. But included were also his life in Faenza, his political aspirations, linguistic experiments, ideas on religious reform. Geopolitical issues of the day are vigorously engaged and farcical passages replete with colloquial phrasing appear alongside passionate theological discourse expressing a strident anti-Lutheran viewpoint (cf. C. Scarpati, Per il testo dei 'Ricordi', in: "Studi sul Cinquecento italiano", Milano, 1982, pp. 68-82; see also D.F. Allen, The Hospitaller Castiglione's Catholic Synthesis of Warfare, Learning and Lay Piety on the Eve of the Council of Trent, in: "The Hospitallers, the Mediterranean, and Europe: Festschrift for Anthony Luttrell", K. Borchardt & al. eds., London, 2016, pp. 286-298). The Ricordi is also very interesting from the point of view of art history and criticism, showing Fra Sabba's antiquarian efforts for Isabella d'Este, his admiration for Dürer's prints, and the artists he had known at Rome, e.g. Gian Cristoforo Romano, Bramante, Raphael, Cristoforo Foppa, 'Il Caradosso', the San Gallo family, just to mention a few (cf. M. Collareta, Il mondi dell'arte dei 'Ricordi' di Fra Sabba, in: "Sabba da Castiglione, 1480-1554. Dalle corti rinascimentali alls Commenda di Faenza. Atti del Covegno, Faenza, 19-20 maggio 2000", A.R. Gentilini, ed., Florence, 2004, pp. 297-312). At the end of the volume is reprinted another work by Fra Sabba, the Consolatoria, written during his stay at Rhodes (November 25, 1517). This consolatory epistle, addressed to the Milanese poet Camilla Scarampi for the death of her husband Ambrogio Guidoboni. This letter was published at Bologna in 1529. From the dedication dated March 15, 1527 to Giacomo Guicciardini, vice-president of Romagna, we learn that Fra Sabba had submitted the work, in the last ten years, to Niccolò Machiavelli and Panfilo Sassi asking them if they considered it worthy of being published (M.C. Tarsi, Una poetessa nella Milano di primo Cinquecento, Samilla Scarampi, in: "Giornale storico della letteratura italiana", 192/639, 2015, pp. 414-451). Sabba da Castiglione was an instance of the self-fashioned courtier-knight of the later Renaissance who combines an unusual set of roles: Hospitaller commander, canon regular, art collector, courtier, poet, and preceptor of knightly rules. He was born in Milan around 1480, where he also became his first. education. He pursued post-secondary studies at the University of Padua, studying jurisprudence from about 1500 to late spring 1505, but did not finish his legal education. After a brief stay in Mantua, in 1505, at the age of 25, he decided to join the Order of the Knights of Jerusalem (later called Knights of Malta), of which he soon became Deputy Attorney General. He lived in Rhodes until 1508, then moved to Rome, where he sojourned seven years as legal aide-de-camp to the admiral of the Order of the Knights Hospitaller (and later Grand Master), Fabrizio del Carretto, cultivating his interest in the arts and literature. In Rome he also met his cousin, Baldassare Castiglione, author of Il Cortegiano. Fra Sabba was a passionate forerunner of archaeology and, during his stay on the Aegean Sea, he was able to procure several ancient marble pieces to Isabella d'Este in Mantua. In 1515, at the age of thirty-five, Fra Sabba became a Hospitaller commander, accepting a post previously held by his friend Giulio de' Medici, the future Pope Clement VII. He took up residence at the Order's Commenda, or commandery, a district headquarters similar to a feudal estate, in Faenza, Romagna, part of the Papal States. He accepted this post to better dedicate himself to the studies he loved so much, away from mundane affairs, the intrigues of courts and military life. His residence in Faenza was the Church of Commenda (Saint Mary Magdalene), also called 'Magione', dating back to the XII century. It was not in good conditions when Fra Sabba came. This was due to the fact that previous commanders had not chosen the complex of the Commenda as their own living place, employing their revenues for other purposes. In 1533, Fra Sabba entrusted Girolamo da Treviso with the task to embellish the church with a fresco portraying the 'Enthroned Madonna between Saint Mary Magdalene and Saint Catherine of Alexandria'. Another work of art of great importance, accomplished in the year of his death, is the one painted by Francesco Menzocchi from Forlì: a monochrome fresco depicting him as an old man presented by Saint Joseph to the Virgin. Underneath this image lies Fra Sabba's sepulchre, with a Latin epigraph composed by himself. His interests as a man of study and collector gave birth to a library, unfortunately lost, and to a collection of pieces of art, whose surviving items are to be seen in the Pinacoteca Comunale of Faenza (F. Petrucci, Sabba da Castiglione, in: "Dizionario biografico degli italiani", 22, 1978, pp. 100-106). Edit 16, CNCE 10159; Universal STC, 819593; Index Aureliensis, 133.665; R.M. Bell, How To Do It. Guides to Good Living for Renaissance Italians, Chicago, IL, 1999, p. 337; C. Scarpati, op. cit., p. 89.

Description
Burlington: Stephen C. Ustick, 1812. Later edition. Contemporary brown calf, gilt tooling on spine, edges and spine worn; tear to upper corner of p. 11 (one word of text missing), text leaves browned with some foxing, stain through last 40 leaves. Ownership inscription on fly-leaf. Rare edition of an influential work. It contains sometimes lurid accounts of religious and cultural practices in India, including, for example, a section on “Immolation of females.” First published in 1811, the work Christian researches in Asia was issued in several editions in England and the United States in the ensuing two years. It was also translated into several languages. According to the Oxford DNB, “Buchanan’s writings were considered authoritative in America and helped to stimulate the American missionary movement and to shape American attitudes towards non-Christians.” The sermons included with each edition vary somewhat. This particular edition, published by Stephen Ustick in Burlington, New Jersey, appears to be relatively rare, with OCLC listing just 6 known copies in libraries. Buchanan (1766-1815) was born in Scotland, and became an East India Company chaplain. He traveled extensively in India and wrote compellingly on what he observed.
