Description
18/06/1945. An extraordinary photo and the only one we have ever seen portraying Eisenhower returning home in victoryFor the General Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Supreme Allied Commander, the last two years of the war would be his most challenging. Eisenhower would oversee the gargantuan plan for the invasion of Europe: the largest air, sea, and land assault in history. He would be the one to give the ultimate order that he knew would send thousands of young men to their deaths. And, despite a top-notch staff and talented commanders, it would be he alone who would have to shoulder the crushing responsibility of decision making. As June 1944 dawned, D-Day approached. On June 1, Ike moved his command post from London to Portsmouth, where he lived in a tiny trailer that he christened “my circus wagon.” It was here that he gave the go-ahead for a June 5 landing which was called back due to bad weather. Ike’s meteorologist forecast a brief window of clear weather for June 6. Sensing that it was now or never, in the early morning of June 5, Ike gave the order, “OK, let’s go” for the 6th.By late evening June 6, it was clear that Operation Overlord, the invasion of Normandy, had succeeded. The Allies had put more than 150,000 men ashore, and the beachheads were littered with Allied tanks and artillery. In late July the Allies would finally achieve a breakout in Normandy and, by August 25, Paris would be liberated. The Allies advanced eastward through the autumn of 1944. But hopes to end the war before Christmas were dashed when bad weather set in. And, on December 16, as Ike was promoted to the new five-star rank of General of the Army, the Germans launched a final attack: the Battle of the Bulge. Initially successful, it in the end failed. The Allied offensive picked up again in early spring 1945. In mid-April, Ike inspected a concentration camp near Gotha, Germany. He was visibly shaken by the horrors he witnessed there. Immediately, he summoned reporters and congressional representatives from the United States; he believed firmly that history must have an accurate and permanent record of these unspeakable atrocities. By early May, the collapse of the Third Reich was imminent. Just before 3:00 a.m., on May 7, 1945, a weary Eisenhower accepted the German unconditional surrender. Someone on Ike’s staff opened a bottle of champagne in a half-hearted attempt to celebrate but it was flat. Exhausted, everyone went to bed. But the defeat of Nazi Germany - perhaps the most important victory in modern warfare - was accomplished. The month after the German surrender was incredibly busy for Ike. Unending paperwork, a flood of congratulations, and mountains of correspondence threatened to bury him. Then came the moment Ike longed for - he started back home to the United States. On June 12, he stopped in London for a victory celebration and made a speech in the Guildhall. There he said, “Humility must always be the portion of any man who receives acclaim earned in blood of his followers and sacrifices of his friends….He may have written a chapter that will glow forever in the pages of military history. Still, even such a man…would sadly face the facts that his honors cannot hide in his memories the crosses marking the resting places of the dead. They cannot soothe the anguish of the widow or the orphan whose husband or father will not return.""Then it was on to Washington, where he arrived June 18, 1945. General George C. Marshall waited with Mrs. Mamie Eisenhower at National Airport for Ike’s arrival. The purpose of the visit was to give General Eisenhower a proper homecoming, complete with parades and other celebrations, to recognize his remarkable efforts in leading the Allies to victory in Europe. Eisenhower’s plane landed at 11:30 A.M. The group departed from the airport for the Pentagon, and Marshall rode with Eisenhower. At the Pentagon Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson greeted Eisenhower and then Ike spoke briefly to thank the many people in the War Department for their support. Eisenhower departed for a grand Victory Parade through the streets of Washington with his staff, to the cheers of thousands. It was the greatest ovation ever accorded anyone in the nation's capital. After the parade, Eisenhower went to the Capitol for a reception arranged by Congress. He told Congress that the welcome given him was in reality the tribute of a grateful country to the three million U.S. soldiers who helped achieve the victory in Europe. Ike then went to the White House to meet with President Truman and his cabinet and advisors, with operations against Japan being the main topic on the agenda. Marshall was with him at the Congressional reception, and also at the White House meeting.A large 10 by 13 inch photograph of Eisenhower with Marshall on their way to meet President Truman at the White House amidst jubilation, June 18, 1945, the very day Ike returned victorious after V-E Day, signed by Eisenhower. An extraordinary photo and the only one we have ever seen portraying Eisenhower returning home in victory.

Description
1854. First Edition. (CRUIKSHANK, George and FAIRLEGH, Frank) SMEDLEY, Frank E., editor. George Cruikshank's Magazine. London: D. Bogue, 1854. Two volumes. Octavo, original pictorial cream paper wrappers, uncut and unopened. Housed in a custom cloth chemise and half morocco pull-off box. $2500.First editions of the January and February issues—all published—of Cruikshank's Magazine, illustrated and with four folding plates depicting the Comet of 1853, Elephantine Performances, methods for curing a bear of a sore head, and the disagreeable aspects of smoking, in original wrappers.Cruikshank's Magazine was the artist's attempt at a humorous magazine, written during a somewhat unstable period during which Cruikshank began to embrace fads and threw himself into teetotalling. In fact, the first issue, January, deals largely with abstaining from smoking. Dickens, in his Household Words, had attacked Cruikshank over his Fairy Library, in which Cruikshank modified traditional fairy tales into alcohol abstinence tracts. As his first inclusion in his February Magazine, Cruikshank chose a screed against Dickens (despite the fact that the pair had been frequent collaborators on works such as Sketches and Oliver Twist). Thus began a crusade. Although the magazine was canceled, Cruishank grew increasingly devoted to his view of morality, a passion reflected in his work. ""Only two numbers were published when the magazine came to an abrupt termination"" (Cohn 185). Slight dampstaining to smoking plate, light wear mainly affecting extremities of wrappers. Near-fine condition.

Description
Brussels: Verteneuil & Desmet, 1914. FIRST EDITION. With 43 fine chromolithographic plates, many finished by hand-coloring. All 26 parts in their original printed wrappers and in excellent condition. Preserved in a folding cloth box with a spine label. First edition. This is the complete set of serial monographs on various groups of birds, with contributions by leading British and European ornithologists such as Sclater, Bowdler Sharpe, Ogilvie-Grant, Hartert, Hellmayr, Salvadori, and others. The magnificent color plates after paintings by Keulemans and Grönvold include 11 stunning illustrations of parrots. According to Zimmer, the intention was to have the complete series embrace all avian groups. This series was edited by the Belgian ornithologist and entomologist, Wytsman (1866-1925), who authored the work on the second family, the Todidae. The text consists of a brief general account of each family, in regard to its relationships and technical history, keys to the genera and species, with their principal synonymy and geographical distribution. The work will thus be of great convenience and value as a synopsis of the birds of the world.

Description
San Francisco: Arion Press, 2002. Hardcover. Fine in very good slipcase. Hardcover. Number 174 of 400 numbered copies for sale, with 26 lettered copies printed for complimentary distribution. This is a beautiful production of Milton's immortal work. The printer Andrew Hoyem writes that this edition pays typographic tribute to two earlier editions of Milton's epic poem: the second edition of 1674, the year of Milton's death, and the second Baskerville edition of 1759, which Hoyem owned and long admired. This edition is presented without explanatory footnotes and omits the Barrow and Marvell poems. However, the earlier examples of textual scholarship prompted the press to obtain a new textual version and to provide an introduction written especially for this edition by the renowned scholar Helen Vendler that offers a fresh perspective on the work. Miltonist John T. Shawcross developed a modernized text. Bound in black cloth with a brown leather spine label with titling in gilt. Light sunning to spine and label. Printed Goudy Text and Baskerville types on special wove paper made for the press by the Zerkall mill in Germany. The arrangement of pages emulates those of the Baskerville edition but with significant differences as described in the colophon. Housed in a black cloth slipcase with a purple leather title label to spine. With a fleur de lis design on the front cover in light purple. Slipcase has evidence of handling and a shallow bump to the top edge. Overall in about fine condition in a very good slipcase. Does not include prospectus or portfolio. Measures 6 7/8 inches by 10 inches. 397 pages including colophon. PRI/111324.

The second part comprises 201 miscellaneous end-game studies by Horwitz, originally composted for and published in, the Chess Monthly 1879-1883.Bernhard Horwitz (1807-1885) was a German English chess master and chess writer. Horwitz was born in Neustrelitz, and went to school in Berlin, where he studied art. From 1837 to 1843, he was part of a group of German chess players known as "The Pleiades". He moved to London in 1845. In 1846, he lost a match against visiting master Lionel Kieseritzky, and another against Howard Staunton, losing 15.5-8.5. His best chess result was winning a match against Henry Bird in 1851. He played in the first international chess tournament, London 1851, again beating Bird in the first round, but losing to Staunton in the second and Jozsef Szen in the third. Unsure if this was the original form in which this document was circulated, or if this is a photocopy of the official version. Not found in OCLC or elsewhere as of March 2025. This draft was among the books in the library of Irwin Silber and Barbara Dane. "The Pasadena Community Information Center (P.C.I.C.) is a Black Revolutionary cadre Organization. We utilize Dialectical Materialism as our scientific method of analysis, and Marxist-Leninist principles in order to change (completely transform) present social/ economic conditions in society. We have chosen (as a result of our investigation and study) a Non-Aligned stance as the most affective way of lending to a more objective condition for analysis. We also see that the only way to have successful socialist revolution, is to see the objective links between the Labor movement and the Community, consolidated by a revolutionary party. In reference to Women and Third World people (particularly Black) we will address these aspects, in relationship to non-alignment in our final draft. This paper has been written to bring out, and elaborate on some of the problems of unity within the left. To put forward various suggestions of resolution. And to fully point out the importance of a Non-aligned stance as the leading force in resolving these problems.

Very Good in Very Good+ dj
Description
London: The Readers Library Publishing Company Ltd.. [1928]. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Very Good in Very Good+ dj. [modest shelfwear, some wear to extremities, binding intact; the jacket shows a bit of wear along the edges and spine, with some very slight paper loss at a couple of corners and a tiny closed tear at the top of the front panel]. (Readers Library, no. 212) Series (8 sepia-toned film stills) Small-format British photoplay edition (about the size of a modern-day mass-market paperback), a "Readers Library Film Edition" novelization of the 1927 silent film starring Douglas Fairbanks and Lupe Velez, set in Argentina. Like all the Readers Library titles, these books were ultra-cheaply produced, so finding copies in decent condition (as this one is) is not always easy; this was has the additional virtue (which not all RL movie tie-ins did) of having a photo section bound in the middle of the book, containing eight full-page sepia-toned scenes from the film; it also includes a 4-page "Editor's Note" at the front of the book, extolling the virtues of Mr. Fairbanks and his Hollywood production set-up (shared of course with his then-wife Mary Pickford). This copy (especially the jacket) is in much nicer condition than books in the cheaply-produced Readers Library series are usually in. (NOTE that this has been tagged as no. 212 in the series, but that this number does not appear anywhere on the book or jacket; it was obtained from the Arnie Davis bibliography of photoplay editions, which also notes that the stills are different from those used in the corresponding American (Grosset & Dunlap) edition, although the text is apparently the same.) .
