Description: London: Saunders and Otley, 1838. Small octavo (17.7 x 11 cm.), xvi, 240, [4] pages. Illustrated with a color engraving frontispiece, woodcut title page, and forty wood engravings in the text. Publisher's advertisements at end. Second Edition, originally issued by the author in 1834. Samuel Bagster Jr. (1800-1835) was the son of a publisher of Bibles and other religious works. The Management of Bees was Bagster's first work, and remained in print until 1865. His second work on bees, Spiritual Honey from Natural Hives, was issued by Pickering in 1834. The author discuss the natural history of bees, and swarming, but is most interesting as a survey of historical methods of hive management, including the cottage system, storifying system, collateral bee-boxes, the hives of Mr. Huish, on ventilation, and finally the "Ladies' Safety Hive". Internally clean and sound; new endpapers. In publisher's gilt-titled and -decorated green cloth, somewhat faded, but with little wear. Near fine. [OCLC locates thirteen copies; British Bee Books 222; Walker Catalogue of Bee Books, page 4].

The book is in good condition only, with chipping along the spine and corners, but the text is clean, and the color pages are fresh and bright. Scalloped outer edge, presumably a nautical "wave" motif. Scarce, with only one copy for sale online, and 4 libraries holding copies on Worldcat.. 37 cm. Unpaginated. 6 leaves. Color and sepia-toned illustrations, color lithographed cover.
