Description
1830. Acquired from the direct descendants of Crawford and has never been offered for sale previouslyWilliam H. Crawford was U.S. ambassador to France during the negotiations to end the War of 1812. During the those negotiations, he was responsible for superintending the American consuls in Europe and keeping them informed of developments. He was also an important negotiator from a distance. He was called home and appointed Secretary of War by President James Madison on August 1, 1815, succeeding James Monroe. Crawford served in the post about a year, and was then named Secretary of the Treasury. When Monroe entered the White House, he continued Crawford in office, and Crawford remained at Treasury until the end of Monroe’s administration.  Monroe’s term as Secretary of War was short but consequential. He presided over the military standing down after years of bitter conflict and also put reform at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point at the top of his agenda.Crawford’s career was long and storied, and he knew many of the great men in the early decades of American government under the Constitution.  Later in life, Crawford suffered a stroke that likely cut short his life.  It certainly changed his political fortunes, as many people think he would have gone on to the Presidency had his mind not been diminished.Document signed, no date, but likely 1830s, 6 pages, signed by Crawford and his 3 witnesses. “In the name of God amen, I, William H. Crawford, being of sound mind and disposing memory, do make and ordain this my last will and testament.  My will and desire the my remains may be committed to the dust according to the custom of the country not doubting that the great author of nature will dispose of my future existence according to the principles of his eternal justice and peace.”  He leaves his possessions to his wife and then to his children, once they are of age.  He instructs that “all my children shall receive the best education which their property will give them…”  He goes on to list debts he owes and debts owed to him, and assigns his executors. This unpublished document was acquired from the direct descendants of Crawford and has never been previously offered for sale.

Description
Troy, S. C., 1907. Single sheet of paper entirely in ink manuscript, 5-1/8" x 6-1/4." Very Good. The commander of the Kentucky Orphan Brigade's Sharpshooters writes to "Joe," otherwise unidentified: "In accordance with your request of recent date as well as to fulfill my promise to you I send you the history as it was written by Ed Porter Thompson in his history of the Ky Brigade of infantry known as the Orphan Brigade. I had twenty men in my sharp Shooter corps, but only eleven with guns to which your confederate order refers. The others were armed with telescope guns manufactured in the South but not near so effective at a distance as the Kerr rifles to which this sketch refers & which your order refers to. The Kerr guns was also a telescope gun. The telescope being much superior to the ones on the Southern made guns. I hope this is what you want, it is true as written by Thompson. If you want to say any thing about me you may say that I am now an humble minister of the Gospel trying to serve my Master as faithfully as I did my Country in the Confed war. As ever your True friend G. H. Burton." Burton was a Confederate officer during the War, a member of Co. F, 4th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry. This was the famous Kentucky "Orphan" Brigade. During the Atlanta Campaign of 1864 Burton was placed in command of the Brigade's sharpshooters, and decorated for gallant and meritorious conduct. After the war he married Sally Bushnell, moved to Georgia, and then to South Carolina, where he became a prominent area Baptist minister. Find a Grave records "Cause of death: suicide by pistol shot.

New Haven: Yale University Press, 1921. First edition. SCARCE LANDMARK STUDY OF FECAL TRANSPLANTS 80 YEARS BEFORE THE INTRODUCTION OF "MICROBIOME". 9 1/4 inches tall hardcover, viii, 135 pages, original green cloth boards, many charts and tables throughout, one folding, 8 plates (3 color). Very good in custom archival mylar cover. The present volume is based on investigations conducted at the Sheffield Scientific School of Yale University and presented in lectures delivered during the autumn of 1920 by the senior author, on the Silliman Foundation. PREFACE: "Fifty years have passed since Pasteur and Koch, the founders of modern bacteriology, made their first contributions to this new field of scientific study. No phase of the subject has been given more attention by investigators than the bacteriology of the digestive tract. However, success in these endeavors has been limited, with few exceptions, to the discovery of microorganisms which are manifestly disease-producing and which exert their baneful influence in comparatively short periods of time, as for example the microbial agents causing typhoid fever and epidemic dysentery. The more subtle bacterial processes which take place in the intestine, and the laws which govern the preponderance of one type of bacteria over another, have as yet been but little understood. The authors have aimed to present here in as direct a manner as possible the results of an extended series of observations on: (1) the relation of diet to the character of the intestinal bacterial flora, and (2) the possibility of implanting bacteria of known physiological properties in place of those which ordinarily hold sway after early infancy." CONTENTS: I. Historical review; II. Feeding and implantation experiments with white rats; III. Feeding and implantation experiments with human subjects; IV. A full account of the preparation of Bacillus acidophilus milk for human consumption, and of its known properties; V. Methods employed in the routine examination of feces; VI. General discussion and summary. LEO FREDERIC RETTGER (1874-1954) earned his doctorate in physiology from Yale University, but early in his career pursued bacteriology, which was then a new science. He was the author of the first scientific article published in the Journal of Bacteriology, and a member of the editorial board from 1916 to 1948. He was an admired mentor, and his graduate students worked with him rather than under him, and received full credit for work performed in his laboratory. The first description of fecal microbiome transplant was published in 1958 by Ben Eiseman and colleagues, who treated four critically ill patients with fulminant pseudomembranous colitis (before C. difficile was the known cause) using fecal enemas, which resulted in a rapid return to health. The term "microbiome" was coined by Joshua Lederberg in 2001, and has now become a household word, with over 14,000 published papers to date.

Description
Houston: Menlil Foundation. First edition. A clean copy with no internal markings. 9 x 6 inches. 64 pages. Orignal cloth with photographic plate laid-in. "American artist Vija Celmins (b. 1938) is widely admired and respected for her sublime images of night skies and ocean waves. Vija Celmins: Television and Disaster, 1964-1966 looks closely at Celmins's early work, which is deeply engaged with the Pop Art scene of 1960s Los Angeles. The authors argue convincingly for a better understanding of this body of work, which is not well known by contemporary audiences, both within Celmins's overall career, and as part of the complicated historical context in which she was working. The book illustrates Celmins's work from the mid-1960s. These paintings and sculptures of war planes, smoking guns, and other representations of death and disaster were informed by images found in books and magazines. Also reflecting the moment when print began to give way to television, as well as the impact of the first televised war, they are creative interpretations of a world destabilized by the turmoil of war and domestic political conflicts" (the publisher).
