01/01/1875. Edward Jenner had discovered that human beings could be protected against smallpox by inoculating them with a vaccine made from cowpox, a disease generally seen in cattle and identical to smallpox yet harmless in humans. Jenner’s discovery was based on exceptional circumstances – the existence of a disease similar to the human disease, but in animals, with a causative agent that triggers a protective response in humans.Louis Pasteur was a French chemist who is recognized as the most important figure in medical history for proving that germs cause infection and disease. He also developed pasteurization of milk and beer to kill these microorganisms, as well as vaccines against anthrax and rabies and pioneered antisepsis by doctors. His contributions are of such magnitude that he was named as #12 in the book “The 100 Most Influential Persons in History”, following the likes of Isaac Newton, John Gutenberg and Jesus. His great step forward with the first use of injection by a laboratory- created vaccination process: the first vaccine as we know it today. In 1872, despite enduring a stroke and the death of 2 of his daughters to typhoid, Louis Pasteur created the first modern vaccine: the vaccine for fowl cholera in chickens. In 1885, he successfully set out to prevent rabies through post-exposure vaccination.Autograph letter signed, July 3, no year, on his Pasteur letterhead, to Mr. Noel-Bretagne. ""Dear Sir, Mr. Battal urgently requests me to send him for his newspaper the manuscript of the speech which I made at the distribution of awards in Auvillars.""I have no copy of the same.""Will you be good enough to send me this manuscript at 66 Rue de Rennes.""Battal was editor of a scientific publication.

Description
Mineral Park, Arizona, 1876. Unbound. Very Good. Autograph Letter Signed. Octavo. 4pp. Mineral Park, March 15. Four small archival clear tape mends along the old folds, else very good or better. A long, detailed letter written in pencil by a miner working for the Keystone Mining Company at Mineral Park. Located in the valley of the Cerbat Mountains in Mohave County, Arizona, the mine was renowned for its gem-quality turquoise found in gold-bearing quartz veins. Gold was discovered in the area in 1863, and the camp of Mineral Park was established seven years later with the discovery of silver. Its surface ores were very rich and carried high values in both gold and silver. Many prospectors ventured into the area, and by 1876 the mining town reached a population of 700, serving as the county seat of Mohave County from 1873 through 1887. Written to his sister, the letter provides a first-hand account of a prospector’s life at the camp: “… I am working for the Keystone Mining Company and making a little over $100 a month … Will & Aunt [?] & Uncle John are over at the ranch building a house … The mines are booming better than ever, the C.O.[?] struck the richest mineral in the camp. We have the extension to it & I think we will come out ahead of our expenses by a good bit. We took out 3 tons of ore on the Columbia and have 20 inches of ore in the face of the tunnel which is in 90 feet. It will come in play … I have specimens of rock salt from the salt mountains and some ore from the Columbia which I will send soon … I am working nights – well in fact night & day … I am making lots of over time but have a soft job and plenty of time to read …” An informative, well-written letter dating from the heyday of the mining town at Mineral Park.

Description
London: Published by David Nutt, 1900. 210 x 152 mm. (8 1/4 x 6"). Three volumes. Translated by Sir Thomas Urquhart and Peter Le Motteux. Introduction by Charles Whibley. VERY ATTRACTIVE BROWN CRUSHED HALF MOROCCO BY BICKERS & SON (stamp-signed on verso of front endpaper), smooth russet linen boards, spines gilt in ruled compartments, raised bands decorated with double rules and small tool at either end, top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed. Publisher's original buckram covers bound in at rear. Decorated title page, initials, printer's device on verso of last leaf. Title pages printed in red and black; pastedowns with bookplate of Sir James Dunn. ◆A couple of tiny scratches to leather on lower cover of volume I, a hint of soiling to lower board of volume II, just a touch of rubbing to bottom edges and corners, a couple of tiny blemishes internally, but these faults all very minor, and the set in excellent condition overall. This is a pleasing edition of the first English translations of Rabelais' masterpiece, originally published in two parts by two different translators, nearly 40 years apart. Britain had to wait a century from the time of Rabelais' death until Sir Thomas Urquhart (or Urchard, 1611-60) published in 1653 a translation of the first two books of Rabelais' oeuvre, comprising "Gargantua" and the first episodes of "Pantagruel." Four decades more passed until, in 1693, Urquhart's version of the third book, continuing the adventures of Pantagruel and Panurge, appeared in print (although the translation itself had been completed much earlier). The English Rabelais was at last completed in 1694 with publication by Peter Le Motteux of the final two books, containing further escapades of Pantagruel and Panurge, as well as the "Pantagruelian Prognostication" and 16 letters of Rabelais. Urquhart, an eccentric Scotsman whose home was the castle of Cromarty, possessed the requisite passionate and saucy temperament to translate Rabelais, and this translation is considered his best work. Our editor Whibley says that "to turn from Urquhart to Motteux is to travel at a page from the old world to the new, to exchange the fastness of Cromarty for the tobacco and the spilt wine of the tavern." Peter Le Motteux (1660-1718) was born in Rouen but migrated in 1685 to England because of the persecution of French Protestants. Although best known today for his translations of Rabelais and Cervantes, Motteux was a person with manifold interests and occupations, importing goods from India and China, composing plays and operas, and holding a position in the post office. His racy translation of Rabelais is equal in verve to that of Urquhart, if less quaint..
