The design was commissioned by The Horn Book Magazine, a Boston based publication which since inception in 1924 used the "Three Jovial Huntsmen" Caldecott image (1880) on horseback blowing their horns, until in 1985 when the publication decided to invite a different illustrator to design new covers for a year – Maurice Sendak was their first choice, and Maurice continued their honoring Caldecott by his "Moishe and Randolph" interpretation. The ink and watercolor drawing measures 9 x 6-1/4 inches on larger paper, Signed in full at bottom right, the initials "R.C." and "M.S." are on Caldecott's sketchbook pages. Aside from the image being used as the magazine cover, a poster limited to 300 signed and numbered copies was also produced. Maurice Sendak was a Brooklyn-born artist, best remembered for his iconic book "Where the Wild Things Are" published in 1963 and winner of The 1964 Randolph Caldecott Medal for the "most distinguished American picture book for children" given annually by the American Library Association's Children Services division. Sendak has written and illustrated numerous children's books, created designs for posters, prints, book covers, advertising campaigns and also many costume and set designs for opera and ballet. This particular design honors Randolph Caldecott, one of the major illustrators of his day and one of the many major influences in Maurice's canon of work.

Yi I (1536-84) was one of the most important Neo-Confucian thinkers of Chosŏn Korea. This book is concerned with sŏng (Ch.: xing), “human nature,” and i (Ch.: li), “principle” or “coherence.” These were key concepts in Neo-Confucian metaphysics. Indeed, in Chinese, Neo-Confucianism is often called “the learning of nature and principle” (Ch.: xingli xue 性理學). Yi To-jung, the descendant of one of Yi I’s disciples, excerpted texts dealing with human nature and principle from Yi I’s Yulgok chŏnsŏ 栗谷全書 [Complete Writings from Chestnut Valley] to make the present work. The book’s colophon, written by Pak Ki-jik 朴基稷, is dated pyŏngja 丙子, which the cataloguers of the Kyujanggak copy and those of the Harvard-Yenching copy conjecture refers to 1816. By contrast, the Berkeley catalogue conjectures that it refers to 1876. We believe that the Berkeley catalogue is mistaken. At the back of our copy, inside the wrapper, the date 1848 has been added in manuscript: “219th year of the Chongzhen reign, the pyŏngwu year” 崇禎二百十九年丙午. Assuming that the wrapper was added after the book was printed, the date of print ought to be 1816. The extension of the last Ming emperor’s reign period Chongzhen beyond its endpoint in 1644 was common in Chosŏn Korea as a way to refuse the use of Qing reign names. There appear to be two recensions of the work. All known copies for which detailed descriptions are at hand (Berkeley 1422.4014.1, Jangseogak MF16-1164, Harvard-Yenching TK 1422 4412, Kyujanggak 奎6265) share these characteristics: heavy line between margin and text (單邊), vertical lines separating columns (有界), 10 columns with 20 characters per column, double inward-facing patterned fish tail (上下花紋魚尾 [Kyujanggak], 內向二葉花紋魚尾 [Jangseogak], 上下內向2葉花紋魚尾 [Berkeley]). However, the Harvard and Kyujanggak copies carry the imprint “printed in Yongsŏng” 龍城開刊, which is not seen on our copy. Like the Berkeley copy, we have 62 folding leaves. After NICHOLAS NICKLEBY, Dickens decided that all his future novels would be issued as loosely-connected tales presented by one Master Humphrey; furthermore, serialization would be weekly, and with illustrations printed within the text rather than on separate plates. MASTER HUMPHREY'S CLOCK was initially issued in 88 weekly parts (each being one folded leaf, with no stitching) -- with every four or five parts also grouped into 20 monthly parts (stitched, within wrappers); the three volumes in cloth were accordingly published separately, at intervals of about seven months. Simultaneous with the publication of Vol III, MASTER HUMPHREY'S CLOCK was divided and issued as two separate one-volume novels -- at which time Dickens gave up on the experiment, and reverted to the old formula (monthly serial parts, with separate plates) for MARTIN CHUZZLEWIT and subsequent novels. This set is in the primary (and usual) binding, with the gilt front cover clock whose hands point to the appropriate volume number. Subscribers to serial parts could have them bound into this "original publisher's cloth" at a multitude of places, so variations of endpapers and edges are many. We have seen copies of MASTER HUMPHREY'S CLOCK with several variations of endpapers: light coffee-brown, plain white, pale yellow, and (as here) white with blue and red marbling. As with some but not all copies with marbled endpapers, this copy has the same marbling on the page edges -- perhaps the most sought-after variant. The condition of the volumes is near-fine, the only notable defect being very slight wear at most of the spine ends; there is minor fading at the top of the Vol III front cover (where a shorter book undoubtedly once stood), but the spines themselves exhibit less than the usual amount of fading. The delicate endpapers are intact, and there is scarcely any foxing within. Each front paste-down bears a 1912 Dickens Centennial stamp that collectors -- led very publicly by the Royal Family -- were encouraged to put into their Dickens books; priced at a penny each, the purchase of these stamps provided income to some Dickens descendants who, it had come to light, were eking by on tiny government pensions (since Dickens's works were no longer providing copyright income). The unidentified writer also tells a cousin about school and family matters. The city has been thrown into a very melancholy state by the loss of the Lady Elgin and over three hundred lives, quite a number of them were coming to Cleveland to the celebration on the 10 ins the pleasure of that day was almost counterbalanced by the loss of life. The Lady Elgin was a steamship that sank in Lake Michigan on September 8, 1860, killing about 300 people. The celebration to which the writer refers honored the 47th anniversary of the Battle of Lake Erie (a War of 1812 naval battle) and unveiled a statue of the battles hero, Commodore Perry. The letter is in very good condition, with deep folds.
