Description
[Mendota], 1861. Small broadside; 5 5/8 x 3 1/4”; an itemization of cash received on behalf of Kansas Relief from various individuals in the amount of $191.88; also 344 sacks were received and then filled from Phenias Royce; by far the most significant amount received was from the Commissioners of the New York State fund: $11,282.62.~~The report of receipts and disbursement was printed up by W. F. M. Arny, who was Agent for the National Kansas Relief Committee. Mr. Arny also requested sample ears of seed corn to be sent to him “by express” in Mendota. The resourceful Mr. Arny pledged to supply “gunnies” to any one willing to donate seed potatoes.~~Arny and the Kansas Relief Committee were not only raising fund for the relief of famine which was plaguing the midwest at the time, they were also fully engaged in the abolitionist movement, and were attempting to fill Kansas with anti-slavery voters, shipping guns and supplies to John Brown, etc.~~An interesting relic, though one which was almost certainly remaindered. Fragile.~~.
