Description
(No place, but Tulsa, OK: The Author, Spring 1960). First edition of Padgett's rare first book, a four-page chapbook. Presentation copy, inscribed on verso front cover to his close friend and collaborator, the artist George Schneeman: "for George Schneeman, Here is my latest and possibly last work, April 1967. Ron Padgett recollects that Summer Balloons "consists of a few poems that I wrote for a girl I was in love with in our senior year of high school in Tulsa. To make them presentable to her, I went to a Mr. Casebeer, a local job printer who worked out of the garage behind his house, setting everything by hand and printing it letterpress. When I asked him how much five copies would cost, he said, "About the same as one hundred," so I had him print more than five, but how many I do not remember, maybe that hundred. For many years I thought that I should have stuck with five, because there were those additional copies floating around displaying my rampant adolescent sentimentality to any and all. But then I said to myself, "Enough with the vanity," and stopped worrying about it. And, after all, the girl was so beautiful and nice. Covers slightly dust-soiled, otherwise a very good copy. 12mo, original white wrappers. Covers slightly dust-soiled, otherwise a very good copy.

Description
Habana, 1965. Very good.. [16]pp. Oblong pamphlet in original pictorial wrappers, stapled. Light wear and toning at wrapper edges, with a few faint creases. Internally clean. A visually rich pro-Casto and pro-Communist pamphlet that highlights the history and core activities of Cuba's Committee for the Defense of the Revolution (CDR), neighborhood-based civil defense organizations created by Castro in 1960 to defend the revolution and maintain social and political control at the local level. This often included activities like surveillance, distribution of propaganda, and vigilante justice. The pamphlet is illustrated with photos throughout, and also contains a two-page spread with maps of the island and charts, data, and statistics about the Cuban people. It contains a year-by-year account of the Committee's achievements and activities, and ends with a section concerning its relations with other countries and their visits to Cuba. The rear wrapper states that editions were published in English, French, and Spanish, as evidenced by the trilingual title on the front cover, but we find no evidence of any edition in OCLC. Scarce, and with much interesting and propagandized information about Castro's local enforcers during the early years of the Communist regime.

Description
Gosudarstvennoe Uchebno-Pedagogicheskoe Izdatel’stvo Ministerstva Prosveshcheniia RSFSR, 1961. Hardcover. First edition thus; 6 x 8 1/2; pp. [2], 3-303, [1]; cloth-backed pictorial boards; wear along edges; few small spots to back cover; pages uniformly age-toned; illustrated with numerous b&w photographs, maps, and tables as well as full-page color plates; good to very good condition. In a typical Soviet fashion - a middle-school world geography textbook has become as much an anti-Capitalism propaganda tool as it is an educational tool. The section on North America and particularly on the US contains various paragraphs on the glaring riches of a few billionaires and the poverty of the rest of the workers (as opposed to the equality of everybody in the Soviet Union), the poisonous air and the ugliness of the big American cities, and the altogether misery of the citizens here. Of particular interest is a map of Manhattan which is quite crude and slightly inaccurate.
